As a contemporary gap year student (Cambridge University re-applicant), she possesses an ardent interest in intersectional feminism, security architecture, green energy and social mobility. At 14, Apolline was elected by her constituency as a Member of the London Youth Assembly (LYA) for Havering (2019 – 2021). As a member of the GLA's education panel, Apolline worked with Sadiq Khan and Assembly Members to coordinate campaigns on subjects such as reducing digital poverty and sexual harassment within educational institutions. In the ‘Don’t zap the zip: Keep London Transport free for under 18s’ campaign, Apolline, alongside her colleagues at the British Youth Parliament and LYA, successfully lobbied to perpetuate the usage of the ‘zip card’; a transport card which provides more than half a million young Londoners with free vital transport. Determined to proffer widespread social change, Apolline currently serves as a UK delegate of the European Youth Parliament and was a United Nations Women delegate for CSW 67. “My filming experience on David’s podcast was overwhelming positive. David seems to have an intrinsic ability to initiate such profound and insightful conversations that allow his guests to delve into introspection and spiritually develop as individuals all while remaining incredibly respectful and multi culturally sensitive. I feel truly honoured and privileged to have featured on this podcast - a platform which I believe empowers and emboldens young people in their ambition and their own sense of self-worth”. – Apolline M.E. 11/20/2023
Episode 95 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Simon Staal recently completed his studies in computer engineering at Imperial College London, one of the best technical universities in the world. As somehow who has always been competitive in the classroom, Simon has an extensive history of prizes attained over his academic journey, recently culminating into being awarded the Siemens Memorial Medal for graduating with the top score in his department. Having lived in 10 countries across 4 continents, Simon has a culturally diverse background, and has helped him gain a strong sense of gratitude for the opportunities he's been given. This has fueled his strong urge to help others, reflected in many years of mentoring and extensive involvement in student representation, for which he was awarded the Electrical Engineering department's Denis Gabour prize for outstanding contributions to student life. On a more personal level, Simon has recently reignited his passion in climbing in the form of indoor bouldering (the most stereotypical software engineer hobby in existence), and enjoys spending his remaining free time hanging out with friends and loved ones, keeping fit, or diving into one of the many games on his list which have accumulated over the busy course of his degree. Having just wrapped up 3 months of travelling in Iceland and South East Asia, he is briefly back in London for his graduation ceremony before moving to Amsterdam to rejoin Optiver as a graduate software engineer. "The conversation with David was a great way to reminisce about previous experiences, and he does a fantastic job pushing you out of your comfort zone with interesting questions that make you think." – Simon Staal --- WHY? Damsith Wimalasena | Triplet (Phychic Connections), Sri Lanka (Prime Minister Internship, 2022 Crisis), Buddhism (Pre-cepts, Letting Go, Peace), Resilience from Family Struggles (Business), Cultural/Context Differences | Coffee's on Me, David Quan 权丁文

11/5/2023
Episode 94 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Damsith Wimalasena is a multi-faceted individual whose life journey has been nothing short of remarkable. Currently an undergraduate student at the University of Cambridge, Damsith is navigating life separated from his triplet siblings for the first time, as they pursue their studies at UCLA. Born and raised in Sri Lanka, he has been molded by the crucible of his nation's recent history, including civil unrest and economic instability. Damsith had the unique experience of interning at the Prime Minister's Office in Sri Lanka during its worst economic crisis, giving him firsthand insight into the complex world of governance and policy-making. Balancing academics and activism is no small feat, but Damsith managed to complete his A-levels amid widespread protests and even under martial law. In the face of familial challenges, including the heartbreaking liquidation of his family business, he has shown incredible resilience. His life is deeply rooted in Buddhist philosophy, a commitment that takes him to Gaya, India, for two months each year to practice meditation and prayer. Continuing a legacy of philanthropy started by his great-great-grandfather—one of Asia's most famous philanthropists who helped reconDstruct the famous Ruwanweliseya Stupa—Damsith has founded the Jackfruit Project. This NGO focuses on food security in Sri Lanka, distributing the versatile and life-sustaining jackfruit as a means to combat hunger. Guided by the strong tenets of Buddhist philosophy, including kindness and compassion, Damsith exemplifies the transformative power of resilience and out-of-the-box thinking. His story is a compelling narrative of overcoming adversity, embracing cultural and spiritual heritage, and actively participating in solutions for pressing social issues. "David is a fantastic interviewer; I would compare him with the likes of Barbara Walters and Larry King. He presents thought provoking and interesting questions and prepares brilliantly for the interview. He researched so much into my life beforehand that I would surely recommend him to be an analyst for the CIA!" - Damsith Wimalasena --- WHY? Stephanie Webb | 2x TEDx, Vulnerability Between Broken (& Beautiful) People, Identity (Trillingual, Asian Diaspora, Sociocultural Crises), Cathartic Creativity (Literature, Art, Poetry), God (Faith, Praying, Hope), Family | Coffee's on Me, David Quan 权丁文

10/18/2023
Episode 93 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Stephanie Webb is a second year English student at Homerton College, University of Cambridge. She grew up in a trilingual environment in Hong Kong where she attended a local school for 12 years followed by an international school. She was granted membership to the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) in Year 8, and was awarded a double honorary and academic scholarship when she was at Harrow HK. Language, culture and identity are largely at the core of her interests. She’s particularly intrigued by the Asian diaspora literary niche, as she feels it resonates with her experience the most. Feminist literature is her key interest as well, and she’s looking to introduce recitals/ discussion groups through being on the committee of the Cambridge Gender Studies Society. She’s always been passionate about writing and expressing herself through words; she believes literature can be used not just as a platform for self-expression, but also as a catalyst for social change. She wrote for Hong Kong’s largest youth-led nonprofit, ISSIA magazine, a publication centred around empowering student voices and raising awareness for global issues. In particular, she feels strongly about making Cambridge more accessible to international students of a lower socioeconomic background, and is working as a mentor for the student organisation Access Abroad HK. Taking her ideas off the paper, she participated in two TEDx initiatives, with both of her talks being selected to be published when she was 13 and 16. She was awarded the prestigious Hong Kong Young Writers award in 2019, and placed in several other writing competitions. A number of her works have been published, such as in the HKAGE’s ‘Out Stand’ publication which chose to exhibit four of her stories. As the first Poet Laureate for Harrow, poetry holds a special place in her heart. She had a lot of fun hosting poetry workshops and was commissioned to write poems on different occasions. At university, she’s enjoying writing for Varsity and is looking forward to starting her new role as Editor for the Cambridge Language Collective. Outside of writing, she is a fan of theatre and performance. She used to be (embarrassingly so, as she recounts), a huge theatre kid, even playing Oliver Twist in a school production. She hopes to become more involved in the Cambridge theatre scene next year. "Talking to David was one of the most though-provoking conversations I’ve had – he truly is a wonderful listener and interviewer. It was almost cathartic to be able to unpack the different facets of my identity that I think make me who I am, and I’m definitely going to be thinking about the questions he posed for a long time!" - Stephanie Webb --- WHY? 1 Minute Preview: Stephanie Webb (2x TEDx, Vulnerability Between Broken & Beautiful People, Identity (Trillingual, Asian Diaspora, Sociocultural Crises), Cathartic Creativity (Literature, Art, Poetry), God (Faith, Praying) | Coffee's on Me, David Quan 权丁文

Episode 92 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Alexa (Lexi) Mousley is a third year PhD candidate at the MRC Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit at the University of Cambridge. Supported by the Gates-Cambridge scholarship, Lexi uses computational models to better understand the development of structural brain networks, particularly during infancy and early development. Beyond her studies, Lexi is a member of the Blues basketball team and enjoys woodworking, hiking, and playing guitar and Nintendo. Before Cambridge, Lexi graduated with honours from Vassar College. She studied neuroscience and behaviour, worked in the Memory Neuroscience lab, and minored in education. She also played varsity basketball and rugby. Lexi was born and raised in Vermont, USA, and her family play a pivotal role in supporting her as she navigates the world as a head-strong, queer woman with an auditory processing disorder. "I am grateful to David for facilitating an interesting and deep discussion. Talking about myself felt stressful at first but David made the conversation easy and enjoyable! I look forward to listening back in many year’s time and reflecting on who I was at 25 years old as well as listen to other’s unique stories…" – Alexa (Lexi) Mousley --- WHY? To converse with someone without a strict time limit or structure – meticulously engaging in a curious process of clarifications or elaborations – is not only a rare privilege. This longer format also allows the sharing of otherwise unshared or unappreciated anecdotes. There are appeals to sound-bite media, of course, but the metrics that matter most to me are more about the uniqueness of contribution than measures of virality. Over time, I hope to be able to better deconstruct guests' fascinating experiences – to seamlessly tease out the insights for listeners to enjoy and learn from while cooking, commuting, relaxing, or walking their pet. But this personal project is fundamentally as much about what we can learn from the guests as it is to give them (current) legacy-worthy interviews. My top priority is for guests to enjoy a unique opportunity to challenge, learn about, and be themselves; hopefully, they will be able to keep recordings of in-depth, heartfelt conversations to reflect on in years’ time. Olivia Woods | Biggest God Theological Dilemmas (Questioning Catholic Schooling), National Finals Public Speaker/Debator, Youth Football Captain (Turning Down Blues), First Gen State School Inequalities | Coffee's on Me, David Quan 权丁文

9/30/2023
Episode 91 of #CoffeesOnMeDavidQuan: Olivia Woods is a second-year student studying Theology at Sidney Sussex College, University of Cambridge. To the slight frustration of her former teachers, Olivia has always had an urge to question whatever information was taught to her, potentially sparking her passion for Theology - a subject that is essentially built on asking difficult questions. Having attended Catholic school, religion has always been at the forefront of Olivia’s education and provided an abundance of opportunities for debate and conversations about faith. Whilst at school, Olivia was a prolific public speaker and Debate Club member - competing in national English Speaking Union competitions. At the age of 15, Olivia became a national finalist after winning district and regional rounds and performed at Churchill College Cambridge, having previously spoken about topics ranging from the existence of old age to the collection of personal data. As the Access Officer at Sidney, Olivia also has a keen interest in promoting the inclusiveness and accessibility of a Cambridge education. Being a first-gen student and coming from a state school, Olivia felt the disadvantages that many state school students experience and now strives to improve accessibility in all areas. When not questioning the existence of God, Olivia is a keen footballer who successfully trialled for Blues and previously captained her grassroots team, all whilst experiencing the inequalities that exist within the women’s game. "David has the impeccable ability to stretch your ideas and opinions, but still keeping the conversation light and entertaining. There’s something so cathartic about listening and being listened to!" – Olivia Woods --- WHY? Annie is going into her third year studying music at St Catharine's College and is a choral scholar, having recently toured Rome with the college choir, as well as enjoying writing more acoustic indie folk songs that she performs at chilled college open mics that she helps to run with the college's music society. As well as being a multi-instrumentalist (the piano diplomas and 2 grade eight distinctions speak for themselves) she is striving to become a music producer and composer after graduating, writing tracks in a range of styles, a few of which can be found on her Spotify and Soundcloud pages. Beyond music, Annie has dabbled in various societies during her time at Cambridge, including the ADC scene, but ultimately her love for helping people has resulted in her being both the JCR welfare rep for Catz (and winning a Community Spirit Award for her work on the committee) as well as working hard to raise money for breast cancer charities with Pink Week for the past two years.
