Two-thirds of the world's population - 6.2 billion people -may live in cities by 2050. Cities presently produce 70% of the world's garbage and use roughly 80% of its energy. These revelations emphasize the need to change how cities evolve more firmly than ever and, at the same time, highlight several questions, including, Does the way our cities are designed affect their sustainability? What does it mean for a city to be sustainable? Plus more. In this episode, Suzanne Ghadanfar discusses sustainability-related reconstruction and answers these and other concerns. Suzanne Ghadanfar is a research fellow for the MSc program in Islamic Art, Architecture, and Urbanism. She holds a BSc. In Architectural Engineering and an MSc. in Urban Planning with over 15 years of working experience. Prior to joining HBKU, Suzanne worked as a teaching assistant at the University of Architectural Engineering in Aleppo, Syria. In addition, she has extensive working experience in designing and supervising architectural and urban planning projects with local and international design firms in Syria and the region. Her research work follows an interdisciplinary approach integrating concepts and theories from disciplines related to urban planning, architecture, sociology, social geography, and urban management and governance. She is interested in exploring the socioeconomic aspects that impact the built environment in post-conflict and post-disaster settings, and especially the role of community participation in shaping urban development. Suzanne is actively involved in local, regional, and international research activities and conferences. Recently, she presented her research paper on urban transformation and the emergence of inequality in Aleppo during the COVID-19 pandemic at a workshop organized by UCL's Bartlett Development Planning Unit in London. She has authored several publications and is currently co-editing a book with Dr. Akel Kahera and Dr. Sultan Barakat on "Strategic Rebuilding and Affordable Housing in the Muslim World." Recycling companies also struggle to find enough waste to recycle, making their mission even more challenging. But what if we could transform waste into opportunities? Dr. Tareq Al-Ansari is an associate professor and head of the division of sustainable development. Dr. Al-Ansari completed his B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from the University College of London (2008), an MPhil in Engineering for Sustainable Development from the University of Cambridge (2011), and completed his PhD at Imperial College London in Sustainable Development and Environmental Engineering (2016). His thesis was titled: "The Development of the Energy, Water and Food Nexus Systems Model". Previously, Dr. Al-Ansari worked at Qatar Energy in the common cooling water project and the Barzan Gas Project. He has also served as a technical advisor at the Qatar National Food Security Program. Dr. Tareq's research portfolio includes; multi-generation systems, clean fuels, energy, water and food nexus, food security, design of sustainable and intelligent food systems, circular economies, CO2 utilisation, and conversion of waste into value-added products through gasification and pyrolysis. There is no doubt that climate change is reshaping our world; the World Bank predicted that by 2050, more than 140 million people in sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Latin America will be displaced within their home countries due to climate change! In this episode, Dr. Sarra Touzi tells us about how climate change contributes to and exacerbates factors in migration. Dr. Sarra Touzi has more than 20 years of experience in integrated natural resources management, climate resilience and multi-stakeholders dialogues facilitation. She successfully led the development and overall management of several projects in the MENA region, both at national and regional scales. She has also led and contributed to technical assessments in various topics related to water security, climate vulnerability evaluation, adaptation action planning, climate funds mobilization, and institutional enhancement, supporting countries to accelerate their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Recently, Sarra contributed to the water security nexus project in North Africa, aiming to catalyze regional coordination around climate change, resilience and migration. In addition, she conducted the water-climate-migration assessment in two pilot cases in Tunisia and contributed to the regional dialogue. Sarra is a hydraulic and rural engineer. She holds an MSc in water science and a PhD in management sciences, focusing on private sector participation and trade-offs of efficiency and equity in water services. Carbon emissions are one of the biggest challenges we face due to the risks posed by CO2 emissions in rising temperature and water levels, as well as the threat it poses economically. So, how can we avoid producing it? In this episode, Dr. Dhabia Al-Mohannadi gives us an overview of how to reduce CO2 emissions by pursuing economically and environmentally sustainable methods. Dr. Al-Mohannadi is an assistant professor of chemical engineering at Texas A&M University Qatar and a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS) and Omega Chi Epsilon Honor Society. Her work focuses on the systematic design of sustainable industrial parks under carbon dioxide limits, resource management, and climate policy evaluation. It also deals with multidisciplinary problems that involve different decision-making processes, engineering, and economics. Dr. Al-Mohannadi’s research leads to the development of analytical tools that assess the flexibility, robustness, and reliability of process systems. Her research interests include the following: Process system engineering Process integration modelling and optimization Sustainable design and operation of eco-industrial parks Carbon dioxide mitigation and natural resource management Inter-disciplinary approaches to decision-making and problem-solving Strategic planning and techno-economic modelling Throughout her career, Dr. Al-Mohannadi has collaborated with several prestigious institutions, including the Petroleum department at Texas A&M University at Qatar (TAMUQ), Maastricht University (MU), American University of Beirut (AUB), and Imperial College of London (IMC).
