Many were later found to be innocuous in nature. Some are more puzzling, and of those the ones that hint at the unexplained disappearances of persons, and on three recorded occasions, entire families, leave police and local government officials quietly baffled and deeply concerned.

In 1985 the Sprawling Carswell housing estate in South London was the scene of a raft of mysterious and tragic disappearances. No remains were found, and even now, 35 years later, the case remains unsolved.
