Ep #177: Trust & Sabbatical

2/13/2023
Showing up and sharing your voice can be scary. It takes courage and trust. I’ve been researching the ways and layers of trust and have found it to be really helpful to see all the ways trust serves - and lack of trust can hurt - our impact and leadership. In this episode, I explore three layers of trust and how they have been a part of my own journey of leadership. From trusting myself, to trusting others, to seeing that there is something much bigger than me that is infinitely trustworthy - these insights have been profound for my own growth. You’ll also hear about a decision that trusting myself has inspired me to make - and why I’m doing it right now. Specifically, you’ll hear about: I hope this episode serves you in releasing and letting go so you can have the spaciousness, confidence and support to do your very best work in our world. Ep #176: How to Make Boring Content Interesting

2/6/2023
In the presentation skills training I facilitate, I’m often asked the question: What do I do if my content is just boring? The truth is, your content can’t be boring or no one will pay attention - it’s just the facts. The good news is - there is no inherently boring content! There is only content that hasn’t been crafted in a way that engages that particular audience. This applies to presentations as well as emails, conversations with clients, business partners and your kids or parents as well. I created this episode to help you take any content and make it way more interesting. Specifically, you’ll learn: I hope this episode helps you brighten up and focus your content in a way that lights up your audience, whether that’s one person or a whole auditorium full of people. Ep #174: Are You Meant for TED?

1/23/2023
There are many awesome ways to share your ideas on stage. That said, there is something special about speaking on a TED or TEDx stage - especially for people who are on a mission to change the world with their message. It makes sense. TED events tend to offer beautiful stage experience and production, and it’s pretty cool to be a part of an event with strong ethical guidelines that is designed to ignite ideas and engagement with the audience. The mystery comes in when aspiring speakers try to figure out how to get on a TEDx stage. It feels daunting and it’s hard to know where to start. I love sharing what I’ve learned working with many TEDx speakers to help remove the barriers to you getting on a TEDx stage if that’s your dream. In this episode, you’ll learn: Here’s the thing: you are meant for a TED talk, if you feel called to do one. Whether you are ready right now or you want to use this episode to continue to establish your credibility, you can absolutely find an event that will fit your goals and big idea. Ep #173: How to Choose the Right Story

1/16/2023
Story is magic for creating connection. When you tell a story that shows the people you want to serve that you get what they are experiencing, have been there yourself (or helped another person go through it), and come out the other side, you are a beacon light for them. This is why I call your Story of Transformation your Beacon Light Story. The truth is, though, you’ve been through a lot of transformations. Any time you go from one place to another, weathering the difficulties along the way, growing and learning - you transform through the process. Knowing how to choose the story that will serve your audience best is important. In this episode, you’ll learn: I hope this episode helps you focus in on the story you want to share as you step into bigger leadership with your message. Ep #172: 5 ESSENTIALS of High-Impact Leadership

1/9/2023
Why do some people get out in the world big and powerful with their message, and others hold back? In my 15 years working with leaders of businesses, I know for sure that it’s not their credentials, expertise or experience. In fact, I know way too many brilliant, highly educated, remarkably experienced people who have not made the impact they could make in the world. Even with the best message and tons of support, something gets in the way. 10 years ago, on a walk in the woods with my two dogs, I was asking myself these questions. That’s when the 5 Cs came to me. I’ve spent 10 years testing this model and it holds strong and true. When these five essentials are strong and emboldened, leaders thrive and serve in a much bigger way. The cool thing is, you can use this as an easy assessment for where you can create a stronger connection in your thought leadership. In this episode, you’ll learn: I hope this helps you think through your own leadership and ways you might shine even brighter this year. Ep #171: About Regret

1/2/2023
Stepping into leadership requires that we make decisions often. Whether it’s when and how to share our ideas so they have the greatest impact or how to respond when someone disagrees with our approach, there are choices to be made at every turn. Sometimes those decisions feel quite high stakes, such as letting a team member go or doing a sales presentation for a potential new big customer. Of course, we are whole humans - not just leaders - and there are plenty of decisions to make in other domains of our lives: which school to choose for our kids, whether to move to a new city or country, how to respond to a health crisis and so many more. Decision-making is a skill that we cultivate over time, but it can feel mysterious to understand exactly what makes us go one direction or another. This is especially true when there seems to be great evidence to support both (or all) sides of the decision. At the heart of it, what we are protecting against is the feeling of regret. Will we stand by our decision down the road, when the outcomes are in play and the ramifications clear? This episode is based on a fascinating article I read about a hidden source of regret that is actually inaccurate and unhelpful. Being aware of this element of regret can help us move through painful feelings that might be activated without warrant. In this conversation, we cover: This will be an episode to revisit key moments in your leadership and human life journey. Ep #166: How to Tap Your Full Freedom Expression

11/28/2022
When you know you are called to use your voice, expertise, and message to serve in our world, that desire can burn strong, even hot at times. It’s not just about saying the thing, telling the story… it’s about feeling fully expressed when you do it. And yet, especially for women and others who are marginalized in power in our society, we are taught all the ways we should be careful, stay smaller, and not make other people uncomfortable when we speak on stages, share our message on podcast guest interviews, write your book... This continuous uninvited training can be so stealthy that we don’t even realize all the ways it is holding us back from feeling the rich satisfaction of our fullest expression. In this episode, you’ll see the ways you might be holding back, even when you don’t mean to, and take away strategies for releasing the fear (and thought storms) that can keep you from showing up in your most glorious, full expression. Ep #164: Burnout & Taking a Sabbatical with Joanna Denton

11/14/2022
It feels amazing to be in the flow of doing great work. Sometimes it’s hard to stop - to step away long enough to have a proper meal or get a full night’s sleep. And for short bursts of time, this can be just fine, if it doesn’t happen too often. When you spend too much time working, especially under a great deal of stress, it can be hurtful to your mental and physical health. The fact that our society inappropriately values hustle and overworking means burnout is way more common that we might realize. No one teaches us how to recognize when burnout is happening, so it can actually become a part of the culture of an organization. It would be great if leaving a toxic culture to start our own business meant an immediate end to overworking and burnout, but that is often not the case. Habits and beliefs that build up over time are hard to recognize and release, even when they feel terrible. In this interview with Joanna Denton, Executive & Speaking Coach, we get to hear Joanna’s story of burnout - two times - during her career. Along the way, Joanna learned a lot about how to recognize the signs of burnout as well as things you can do to take care of yourself when you notice these signs. Inside, you’ll hear about: Some of the possible shadow side of creating a successful careerWhat burnout means - and how to recognize the signsHow Joanna experienced not one, but two, burnouts in her corporate careerWhy starting your own business is not the answer (in itself) to stopping burnoutJoanna’s upcoming sabbatical - and how I’ve taken a few of them in my business, tooThe reason that writing a book, delivering a TED talk (Joanna has done) doesn’t guarantee success or ease in your business, thought leadership or life (and what they DO give and teach you)Ideas for rest and nourishment for your journey as a business leader Joanna is vulnerable and real, funny and super smart. I hope you love this conversation as much as we enjoyed creating it for you. Joanna’s Bio: Joanna trained as a coach in 2015, and after working first in an in-house role for her then employer, she started her own business in October 2016, working for clients all around the world and in different industries and organisations. Prior to that, Joanna worked as a tax consultant for 16 years in Big 4 accounting firms in both the UK and Luxembourg, working up to the level of Director in 2010. Two burnouts in five years made her fall out of love with her well-established tax career, even though on the face of it she was at the top of her game. In 2014, after burnout number 2, she left tax, became a coach, and changed pretty much everything about how she lives her life. Since then, it has become her mission to make sure that her clients don’t wait till their lives are falling apart to make changes in their lives; she helps her clients continue doing what they love, AND do it in a way that they can still have the energy to have a life outside work with the ones they care about. website: www.joannadenton.com Download a free copy of Michelle’s book, Beyond Applause: Make a Meaningful Difference Through Transformational Speaking here: MichelleBarryFranco.com/FreeBook

Ep #163: Kris McGuigan on Being Courageous & Real in Her Book & Speaking

11/7/2022
There is a difference between being an expert speaker and a transformational speaker. They aren’t mutually exclusive - some of our most influential thought leaders show up in both capacities. Kris McGuigan knows how to weave expertise and transformation together with mastery, and that’s a real gift. She’s the perfect person to listen to and learn from about making your way in the speaking and thought leadership world with authenticity and commitment. When I met Kris just under five years ago, she was committed to serving from bigger and broader reaching stages but was early on that path. In fact, she flew to my state so we could spend a full day together crafting her first well-paid speech. The path wasn’t easy or straight-forward all the time, but Kris stuck it out and her commitment paid off. She is now speaking on amazing stages regularly and has just published her first (of many, I’m sure) book. Kris’ story and insights are powerful because she knows what it takes to become a well known thought leader, starting from the beginning. But what makes listening to Kris and learning from her even more powerful is the way she brings genuine and honest humanity to the process, and to the world of work. This is a book about professional courage, a gift to people in companies and organizations who want to rise to their own greatness… and it's a beautiful guide to living a courageous, brave life. In this episode, we talk about: The difference between the way we picture getting onto great stages - and what it really takes to get thereThe small step processes Kris engaged to practice telling her more real and raw stories before she put them into her book. Courage in systematic action. When Kris noticed she wasn’t ready to be a transformational speaker and how her speaking evolved so that eventually it felt like the only thing she wants to do.The meaningful distinction between workshop speaking and keynote speakingHow fear can be fuel for doing great things - and where courage comes inWhat Courage in Action means for your impact in the world - whether it’s career change, life change or stepping into thought leadership You’re going to love Kris McGuigan’s book, The Requisite Courage: How to Make Brave Decisions in Business and Life. It’s captivating, engaging and actionable. Kris McGuigan is the founder and principal owner of Professional Courage. Ep #162: The Magic of Mastery

10/31/2022
You know that jaw-dropping feeling when you watch a musician hit those impossible notes, or play that unbelievably complex piano piece… that sense that something even bigger and more magical than practice and great training is at play. This is when we use words like: “born for this” “they’re a natural” “supernatural” to describe what we are experiencing. Very often what we’re experiencing is mastery - the magic of mastery. Mastery is when a person has honed, practiced, iterated, tried again and again… failed, picked back up, tried harder and then tried something new. When they’ve put in the time, energy and emotional investment to move through the learning curve, come out the other side then go on a journey of their own. Mastery is when we go beyond competence, move through expertise and enter into the beauty and unexpected experience of artistry. Understanding mastery makes us better speakers, facilitators, and leaders. Knowing when we are sharing from our own mastery - and how to build a bridge for others who don’t have mastery in that area..means we create experiences that will best support those we want to serve. Celebrating the mastery in others allows us to enjoy their contributions in a much more exciting way. It also guides us in choosing the best collaborators based on the interplay of our skills, competence, mastery and artistic approach. In this episode, we talk about: How to recognize when you are in the presence of masteryWays to appreciate mastery in others - and how to know when you need more guidance to make the most of itWhat mastery feels like inside ourselves - and how to celebrate it and keep it thrivingWhy having mastery can actually cause us to give unhelpful advice or support - and how to realize when this is happening so we can serve better I hope you enjoy this episode. It’s a topic that can make you even better in your ability to impact and serve in our world. Ep #161: How Executive Coach Jill Griffin Makes a Powerful Impact Sharing Her Story

10/24/2022
The most common type of question I get is: How did they do it? How did they get the 5-figure speaking gig? How did they land the interview in the media or on that amazing podcast? What does it take to really, truly build a business and/or meaningful impact on your story and expertise? The answer to that question is as varied as the people asking - and living out that story. There are some key things that need to happen, though. You need to be willing to share yourself, even some of the stuff that scares you (it doesn’t have to be all of it!). You need to spend time knowing who you serve and how your story can best inspire them, teach them and move them to action. Jill Griffin built an award-winning, remarkable corporate career. One where she had lunch with Oprah and got to meet President Barack Obama. She hung out with famous musicians. She also helped many world-class brands bring in even more customers and additional millions of dollars. And she did all of that while hiding a traumatic brain injury that made doing her job so much harder than it had been before. Already recognized as an expert in strengths-based leadership and career strategy, Jill decided to begin sharing more of her story in her speaking and thought leadership. This has led to opportunities and impact that have made her business and career even more successful and satisfying. Ep #160: Anti-Fashion & Authentic Style with Elsa Isaac

10/17/2022
As we grow in our careers, influence and leadership, our opportunities to shine and serve bigger audiences increase substantially. It’s both a natural part of the process and one that can catch us off guard with the new things we need to consider and learn. One of those things we come up against is how to present ourselves physically at these larger visibility opportunities. There are so many things to consider what to wear and how to show up depending on whether there will be photos, video, stairs, hot lights… all of the elements of stepping onto bigger stages (both live, virtually, in the media). Ep #159: When You're Mean to Yourself

10/10/2022
It’s common for us to think that telling ourselves we aren’t good enough will motivate us to do better work, perform better. And interestingly, there is some truth to that. Research does show that people who are realistic about what they need to do to perform at their highest level are likely to perform better than those who are overconfident. That said, being mean to ourselves is never helpful. When we go from a clear, focused plan for improvement to berating ourselves and telling ourselves all the ways we’ve failed, done something wrong or aren’t capable of delivering no matter what we do… that’s a recipe for a whole lot of stuckness and lower (or complete lack of) performance. Speaking on great stages, writing your book, delivering a presentation at work… having that difficult conversation with your boss, your teenager or partner… these can all be difficult experiences. We need to be our own ally - our own best support and coach. I’ve seen clients go from paralyzed to proud of their delivery more than I can count, after they see what we talk about in this podcast episode. In this episode, you’ll find: This process and way of seeing our thoughts and self-talk has been life-changing for me and many of my clients. I hope you find it helpful, too!
