Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Special Edition - Film Collectors

9/15/2023
Support us on Patreon 👉https://www.patreon.com/missingepisodes 🙌 Tip us on https://ko-fi.com/missingeps Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/drwhopodcasters It’s a SPECIAL EDITION of The Missing Episodes Podcast. Since private collector Terry Burnett returned two episodes in 2011 and the announcement in 2013 of nine episodes found in Nigeria, to date, no further missing episodes have been returned, despite the fact that episodes are known to exist in private hands. So, as they’re the most viable option for further Doctor Who missing episode returns in the future, it’s time to talk film collectors. TV producer and missing episodes expert Paul Vanezis, along with well-connected and established film collectors John Clancy and John Franklin join Tim for a frank and colourful discussion on the hobby of film collecting and the film collecting community. What is film collecting? Why do people collect film? Is there much interest in TV on film and how much of it is about? How did material make its way from copyright holders into collections? What is the size and state of film collecting today as a hobby? What are attitudes like about secrecy? Are film collectors deliberately hoarding missing episodes? The truth is probably more complicated than you think… We learn that many collections are tragically ending up in landfill on a regular basis, so what can be done about that? One solution, being worked on by the panel, is to hold a film collectors’ event and we get to learn all about October’s “Film is Fabulous” and what that might reveal… With enormous thanks John and John for taking the time to talk to a Doctor Who fan and indeed to Paul for making this happen. 8/25/2023
Support us on Patreon 👉https://www.patreon.com/missingepisodes 🙌 Tip us on https://ko-fi.com/missingeps Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/drwhopodcasters It’s episode 14 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! The first story of season 4 sees the Lloyd/Davis soft reboot continue, with a trip to 19th Century Cornwall. Brian Hayles returns to write the first truly generic historical, which see groovy new companions Ben and Polly embark on their first adventure in time and space. What more do you need in a 19th Century historical romp than pirates vs smugglers vs revenue men? Tim is joined by colouriser Rich Tipple https://www.itsfarfrombeingallover.co... and researcher Rhys Williams (Doctor Who Magazine) who are all more accepting of the concept of time travel than Ben. Together they tackle the questions of why The Smugglers tends to slip from fans’ minds, what The Smugglers might have looked like and how successful (or otherwise) it was. Then it’s off on the usual world tour, as we look at where The Smugglers sold, what the Aussie and New Zealand censors thought and what the chances are of ever seeing some more of it are. So grab a Smallbeer from the fridge, lay down on a comfortable Gurney, and join us as we crack Deadman’s secret key and take a long, hard look at The Smugglers! Support us on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/missingepisodes Tip us on https://ko-fi.com/missingeps Follow us on Twitter https://twitter.com/drwhopodcasters It’s episode 13 of The Missing Episodes Podcast! For the first time proper, the TARDIS is back on contemporary Earth, indeed in contemporary London, and The Doctor and Dod… uhh… the Doctor and new, groovy companions Ben and Polly face down the mechanical menace in the Post Office Tower and The War Machines. Master podcaster Steven Schapansky (@RadioFreeSkaro) and Doctor Who Historian Jon Preddle (https://broadwcast.org/) join to help analyse this most seminal of stories, as Season 3 draws to a close and Doctor Who marches on in a new format under Innes Lloyd and Gerry Davis. Then it’s off on a world tour, as Jon talks us through the sales process, censorship in Australia and New Zealand and how and why four prints of The War Machines ended up in Nigeria, to be found by Ian Levine in the 1980’s. This is the deepest of deep dives and summarises years of Jon’s cutting-edge research. We also explore why, perhaps, The Wheel in Space wasn’t in Jos when Enemy and Web were recovered over ten years ago! So leave your Dodo at home, put on your fab gear and join us as we take a look at The War Machines. If you enjoy this podcast, we ask that you share it on social media to help us find our audience! The Savages is not only missing from the archives, but also seemingly missing from fandom’s thoughts and affections. What makes it so intangible? What is it about and what did it look like? To explore these questions, Tim is joined once again by Gav Rymill (Dalek 63.88, Doctor Who Magazine, Doctor Who: The Collection) and Rhys Williams (Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who researcher.) Ian Stuart-Black’s Doctor Who debut, brings with it a host of firsts as the show begins to reshape itself into the format that would sustain it until, well, now; from the first use of a quarry, to the first proper performance of someone else portraying the Doctor. We also say goodbye to Season 3 stalwart Steven Taylor and Dodo continues to enjoy her character’s resurgence, which began in The Gunfighters. So, thanks to the insights of Gav and Rhys, we find that there’s much to enjoy in this forgotten, cautionary tale of exploitation gone awry. There’s also an in-depth analysis of fur swimwear. So prime your reacting vibrators, prepare to donate your ‘brain juice’ and join us as we explore the world of The Savages. Paul is back and after some skullduggery in a Parisian tavern, Steven Schapansky (host of the podcast phenomenon that is https://radiofreeskaro.com/) joins the team for a look at Season 3’s and indeed Doctor Who’s most missing serial: The Massacre (of St Bartholemew’s Eve). Together, they try and unpick the genesis of the story. Was John Lucarotti the main force behind it, or is that just a load of old Tosh? Does Lucarotti’s Target novelisation offer some clues? Does the doppelganger plot thread work? And of course we discuss the usual missing episodes aspects – will we ever get to see it? Gav is joined by researcher extraordinaire Rhys Williams, fresh from his stunning piece on The Wheel in Space in Doctor Who Magazine (co-written with Simon Guerrier and Gav!) Rhys collects facts like Mavic Chen collects Taranium. Together they shine considerable light on how iconic scenes in DMP would have looked, what the Australian censors saw, the Doctor Who sales process and the technical side of the creation of film prints. If that’s not enough, author, broadcast history and missing episodes researcher and driving force behind the indispensable https://www.broadwcast.org, Jon Preddle, weighs in with a detailed account of the censorship process and the returns of episodes 2, 5 and 10. So put on your SCUBA gear and join us on this very deep dive as we ponder what YOUR most missed missing moments are, why we have the clips and episodes that we have, what the chances are of more DMP coming back and how many vegetable terms the Australian censors can use to describe Zephon. 3/25/2021
Season 8 on Blu-ray is upon us, so in a bonus episode of The Missing Episodes Podcast, it’s off to The Slaughtered Lamb The Cloven Hoof to meet four people who helped with the latest restoration of "The Daemons". Once upon a time, 4 of the 5 episodes of The Daemons were only known to exist on black and white 16mm film, and while standing on the shoulders of giants (figuratively), Kieran Highman, Ant Lamb, Gav Rymill and Rich Tipple talk about their contributions to the latest version of that most renowned of Pertwee adventures. So be a devil and join us as we ponder where technology has led us and where it may lead us in the future of restoration. Gav’s latest book “The Dalek Combat Training Manual” can be found here. Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 8 - The Daleks' Master Plan (Part One)

3/15/2021
It’s a much missed, long sought after “epic”, yes, The Missing Episodes Podcast is back from the junking pile. This is the first of two episodes looking at the twelve-part Season 3 story, “The Daleks’ Master Plan.” In part one, Paul and Tim are joined by the brilliant Gav Rymill. Gav, a man of many talents, is well known for his work in Doctor Who related graphic design and for being one of the two men behind the phenomenally successful “Dalek 63:88.” Gav leads the team on a deep dive into the origins of the story, what might have been, what the heck was going on the with casting of companions and reveals, for perhaps the first time, whose nipples feature in DMP. There’s a veritable Volcano of facts, more to chew on than at The Feast of Steven, (sp) and despite the long recording session, we hope we avoided The Destruction of Rym-ill. So welcome, delegates and please enjoy Gav’s wonderful insights into this mostly missing classic. Gav’s latest book “The Dalek Combat Training Manual” can be found here. Gav and Jon’s wonderful “Terry Nation Army” videos can be found here. Jess Jurkovic’s “Dudley Simpson is Doctor Who” can be found here. Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 7 - The Myth Makers

8/1/2020
“Beware of Greeks bearing gifts!” Unless, as it turns out on this occasion, the gift is comedian and sixties Doctor Who stalwart Toby Hadoke, all lovingly gift-wrapped and ready to talk. It doesn’t take long to become apparent that Toby and the team are cheerleaders for the much neglected “The Myth Makers”. And there's plenty to say on the subject, from it's semi-historical originals to its status as the first full-blooded comedy in the Who ouvre. It's also the first Wiles-Tosh project, where bawdy high comedy and bloodstained tragedy go hand-in-hand. Does such a mix make for a successful Doctor Who story, or is it all too much? If you're unsure, open your mind and let Toby persuade you... After the team have finished eulogising they put on their Missing Episode hats and turn their attention to the country that once seemed to offer the best hope for Myth Makers and its season 3 brethren: the much debated Sierra Leone. If you've ever been confused by the ongoing and rather twisty narrative of out-of-contract repeats, shelled TV stations and Morecambe & Wise hiding in a derelict cinema, their analysis should set you straight. On top of which, there may well be a rare update-ette from one of the top bods in the Missing Who field! What's a Grecian urn? Who cares, the Missing Episodes Podcast is free, so what excuse do you have not to listen! If you’re bored of Paul and Tim, Toby comes in at 2 minutes, 45 seconds. Missing episodes stuff is discussed at around the 55 minute mark. If you enjoy this podcast, we'd love it if you shared it on social media to help us find our audience! Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 6 - Mission to the Unknown

7/27/2020
Missing episode enthusiasts Paul and Tim think they've hit on a Varga-ood idea: tracking down lost TV signals in outer space… After they've tackled that thorny issue, they set about a more realistic goal: reviewing the Season 3 one-part story Mission to the Unknown. Mission acts as a trailer for the forthcoming twelve-part epic “The Daleks’ Master Plan” - but does it do its job? Is the Doctor-less experiment successful in its own right? And can Paul and Tim keep track of three characters’ names in a 25 minute piece of television drama? This time they are joined by Andrew Ireland from the University of Central Lancashire. The driving force behind the wonderful 2019 live action recreation of the story, Andrew brings his deep understanding of Mission to the team's discussion of the story, and adds a host of insights into the virtues of 1960’s TV production methods. In 2019, Andrew also appeared on our good friend Richard Smith’s “Something Who” podcast and gave fascinating testimony to the production of the UCLAN project. We highly recommend not only revisiting this podcast first, but also Richard’s review of the story which features all manner of Delegatory delights with author Jac Rayner (plus a couple of voices which may sound familiar). They can be found here: https://somethingwho.podbean.com/e/episode-55a-andrew-ireland/ https://somethingwho.podbean.com/e/episode-55-transmission-of-the-unknown/ Three Varga-ood podcasts for the price of one! (Oh no, we've done that joke.) If you enjoy this podcast, we'd love it if you shared it on social media to help us find our audience! Tim is on Twitter @drwhopodcasters, Paul @mrpaulmorris and please do come and like our Facebook page. This free podcast borrows snippets of music from “Marche, Les Structures Sonores” – Lasry Baschet. Posh restaurant music is borrowed from Luigi Boccherini. Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 5 - Galaxy 4

7/5/2020
All is not as it appears and evil can be found where you least expect it! Yes, BBC Enterprises' attitude to missing episodes back in the late 1970's wasn't the most helpful, as this episode’s guest explains. First off, Paul and Tim review the largely missing Season 3 opener, while they dispute fan lore and ponder what this story is really about… Then they’re joined by Jan Vincent-Rudzki for a look at the foundation of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society, his involvement with seminal documentary “Whose Doctor Who”, and his subsequent stewardship of just shy of 6 minutes of “Four Hundred Dawns”. Jan also obtained those oh-so-important 8mm snippets of monochrome Who and he provides fascinating insight into those early days of organised fandom and the dawning realisation that much of our beloved show had gone, perhaps forever. So tune in your Chumbley and join us as we review “Galaxy 4”. It's a Rilly good listen! If you enjoy this podcast, we'd love it if you shared it on social media to help us find our audience! Tim is on Twitter @drwhopodcasters, Paul @mrpaulmorris and please do come and like our Facebook page. This free podcast borrows snippets of music from “Marche, Les Structures Sonores” – Lasry Baschet. Trundley noises are borrowed from the original broadcast of Galaxy 4.

Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 4 - The Time Meddler

6/3/2020
Join Paul and Tim for some mischievous monkery as they review the last story of season two, “The Time Meddler”. This episode they’re joined by Doctor Who author and missing episodes researcher Jon Preddle, the driving force behind www.broadwcast.org. After talking about his research in general, Jon provides fascinating and expert insight into the bicycling system used to distribute Doctor Who, the sales process and NZ censorship. We then see the tip of of his research iceberg into that most fruitful of countries for missing episodes, Nigeria, where "The Time Meddler" was found in the 1980s. We're not a mountain goat, but we prefer podcasting to any day, so pop us on your anachronistic gramophone and give us a listen! (And besides, we hate climbing.) If you enjoy this podcast, we'd love it if you shared it on social media to help us find our audience! Tim is on Twitter @drwhopodcasters, Paul @mrpaulmorris and please do come and like our Facebook page. This free podcast borrows snippets of music from “Marche, Les Structures Sonores” – Lasry Baschet and a bunch of monks singing Secundae Vesperae in Narivitate. There’s also a woeful homage to Carry on Camping. And yes, Tim does know that Talbot Rothwell didn’t write ALL of the Carry On Films… he got overexcited.

Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 3 - The Crusade

5/22/2020
Ever wondered what you’d do if you found a missing episode of Doctor Who? After Paul and Tim review the season two story 'The Crusade', Paul Scoones joins them to recount 'The Lion’s Tale'. Paul was one of the dedicated New Zealand superfans who helped recover episode one of the story in 1999. Paul (aided by wonderful written testimony from his good friend Neil Lambess) recounts this compelling tale of great good fortune, chewed nails, BBC bureaucracy and those that helped along the way. Join us for this very special episode: Paul and Tim were grinning from ear to ear as the tale was told and we’re sure you will too! The full 90 minute interview will imminently be released as a bonus; in it we discuss Paul’s extensive involvement in many official and unofficial Doctor Who projects, with added Lion content! Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 2 - The Reign of Terror

4/25/2020
The Missing Episodes Podcast is back, for more Doctor Who lacunae! This time Paul and Tim examine The Reign of Terror: an important story in the evolution of the Who Historical, with its funny bits and less didactic tone - but is it any good? It's certainly incomplete, and Greg Bakun from Kaleidoscope and From the Archive joins in to discuss the animation of the two missing episodes. Greg gives great insight into the animation process and talks about what might have been! There's also as thorough a probing of overseas sales, mysterious private collectors and dusty foreign archives as anyone could want! Come join our secret rendezvous at the Chien Gris (*NB possibly the Sinking Ship) for all this, plus bonus references to horse droppings, Tony Hart and CGI cat bottoms. Greg's blog can be found at www.from-the-archive.co.uk For those bored of Paul and Tim, Greg joins the conversation at 37 minutes and the Missing Episodes talk of dusty archives and private collectors starts at 1 hour, 18 minutes. Doctor Who: The Missing Episodes Podcast - Episode 1 - Marco Polo

4/10/2020
"Missing Episode podcasts. People like them, so let's make some more of them." Join Paul and Tim, otherwise known as Doctor Who and the Podcasters, as they start their alternative history of Doctor Who: those 97 tantalising gaps. They explore how these stories came about, what we're missing, and what the chances are we'll ever see them again. In this first episode they focus on Marco Polo, a pivotal moment in the development of the show and a rattling good yarn in itself. (Don't mention 2013. I did it once, but I think I got away with it.) If you enjoy this podcast, as a fledgling enterprise, we’d really appreciate it if you share it on your social media and help us find our audience. This free podcast borrowed some snippets of music: “Space Adventure Part 2” – Martin Slavin, “Three Ancient Melodies” – Louis Chen, “Wouldn’t it be nice” - The Beach Boys, “Marche, Les Structures Sonores” – Lasry Baschet.
