Fundraising is a high-pressure career. This year 80,000 development professionals will be leaving the field and profession. Across the nonprofit sector, the turnover rate is 29% compared to 8% in the corporate sector. The major contributing factor is burnout where 47% of nonprofit workers identify burnout as a regular part of their work experience. Thus, prioritizing mental health and wellness at work is key. Ep 21 Reframing the Arts Sector Part 2

8/8/2023
In Part 2 of Reframing the Arts Sector, guests Calida Jones and Doug Clayton point out that the Arts are not just commodities and oftentimes are overlooked as vital cultural resources that enhance and enrich communities. Another way to look at how many arts organizations are not prioritized either through community engagement or philanthropic resources is subjective and misplaced notions of what is and who defines something as of 'quality'. The exploration and community-centered arts organizations by design are to be inclusive and accessible, so who's standards say when that "quality" has been achieved? Tune in to this conclusion to our conversation on how to innovate and reframe the arts sector toward achieving and prioritizing equitable, accessible, and inclusive models and approaches to have the broader reach and social impact many in the Arts sector strive to attain. Funders also should rethink how they prioritize the Arts in their grantmaking approaches to also be equitable in other areas of funding that align with arts education, arts as an economic driver, and arts as a vehicle for healing and wellness. Ep 15 Work-Life Balance or Life-Work Balance? What's the Difference? Part 2

6/13/2023
Balance! What are realistic solutions if you feel out of balance with work and home life? At the end of the day, we all only have so many hours to “produce.” How will you choose to divide that time? Talk about balance and how you want it to look if you are feeling out of balance. As employers and employees we need to honor how each of us has divided our time into those buckets. Think of your priorities in buckets. Listen and learn how to borrow time from one bucket temporarily to meet a deadline or event. It’s ok to walk away. Take a step back and identify that in a particular season of life, you need to take a step back. And if you are working from home…walk away, take a step back. When the work day is over, walk away. And, you need to take breaks throughout the day too. After all, you do not have that decompression or transition time you used to have when you would leave the office! Take a moment for yourself. Get your mind off of business. “Walk away” from this episode taking action to divide your time into your priority buckets and say yes to adventure! Ep 14 Work-Life Balance or Life-Work Balance? What's the Difference?

6/6/2023
Did you know 60% of Americans feel like their work-life balance is unhealthy? Deniz says Life-Work Balance. Tom says Work-Life Balance. Who is right? Who is to blame for the unbalance the employee or employer? Or is it the job market? There are many qualified individuals applying for the same job and it’s competitive out there!! A great conversation was started about what that balance looks like. It’s funny how you can think you know what your priorities are but when you see where you actually spend your time, your actions say otherwise. Tom suggested a great activity to see where you spend your time vs. what you say your priorities are. It is quite eye-opening!! Recruiting and retaining top talent whether for your nonprofit staff or board is an issue thousands of nonprofits are experiencing in this ever-evolving and changing world of work. What may work with corporate recruiting doesn’t always apply to nonprofits – and in this episode, Chief People Officer Jorge Diaz, shares his perspectives as a recognized longtime human resources executive and experience serving on nonprofit boards and committee. Trained also as an executive coach and serving as an adjunct faculty member teaching graduate students on how to motivate teams in the workplace, Jorge identifies that for building effective nonprofit boards, board members need to practice "Organizational Attention" – an intentional self-reflection as a group to assess the following: how is our board operating; how is our work aligned with the organization's mission, how are we supporting organizational priorities; and how are we doing as a team?
