How a Fifth of a Pencil Changed Thousands of Lives with Jackson Kaguri, founder of Nyaka

7/4/2023
Today’s episode is incredibly special. . .and magical. It may seemingly step outside the domain of women in midlife creating magic and mayhem…but just wait. I often say, if you ever doubt the life-changing impact one person can have, meet Jackson Kaguri. Jackson is the founder of Nyaka, an organization which provides community-based solutions to address the needs of orphaned and vulnerable children in rural southwestern Uganda. Nyaka surrounds each child with a comprehensive support system. This consists of interrelated programs such as education, health care and housing, developed and led by the community, where children are nurtured and protected so they can learn, grow, and thrive. In 2019, I ran the NYC Marathon to raise money for Nyaka and it was one of the highlights of my life. This year I am running again, along with my husband Scott, our daughter, Ellie, and my son’s girlfriend, Brookelynn. Together with 19 other runners, we make up #teamnyaka, who has had a NYC Marathon entry since 2018. Many of us on this team are repeat runners because of how much we believe in Jackson and the work of this organization. Jackson is a gifted story-teller and his own personal story is not one you will forget. Hearing how he approaches creativity, challenges, purpose, life and contribution to the world is absolutely full of gold, no matter your age or station in life. This man, this cause, this conversation…is full of wisdom and magic. Please…Listen closely. *** I am raising $4000 by running the NYC Marathon on November 5th #teamnyaka for the children and families of Nyaka! SOLO: How to Change Your Relationship to Time

6/27/2023
This is another solo, unscripted episode: I've been feeling unmoored of late -- perhaps from all the moving, menopausal hormones and stage of life. I've also been feeling the pressure of time. Like I live with a clock over my head, quietly - and sometimes loudly - signaling that time is ticking. I've somewhat lost sight and let go of the practices that I know bring me back to harmony and my Center. This wasn't a conscious decision. It's one of those things that just...happens. So I've started going back up to my studio in the mornings. Most recently, I started a short course in the Insight Timer app (get it if you don't have it!) called Timelessness. I've always had an intellectual understand of Time being an illusion -- but I'm not sure my nervous system got the message. This episode is a sharing of the 3 questions from a recent meditation from that course that caused a major shift in my awareness. What came through made such an impact I want to share it with you here. Enjoy and I'd love to hear if these 3 questions make a difference for you. Be well. Fine is a 4-Letter Word with Lori Saitz

6/20/2023
I have an issue with the word fine when it’s used in the context of answering the question, “How are you?” We typically say…fine. How about let’s be more accurate and specific in answering that question. Or better yet, how about you are way MORE than just “fine?” Today on the podcast, I speak with Lori Saitz. Lori is the founder and CEO of Zen Rabbit and host of the podcast “Fine is a 4-Letter Word.” An award-winning author, speaker, and broadcaster, Lori is on a mission to teach the world to be calm and grounded no matter what’s going on. High achievers come to her because they have a strong drive to be productive, but at the end of the day never feel accomplished enough. As a nationally recognized gratitude and meditation expert, Lori guides those entrepreneurs and business leaders from stressed and chaotic to peaceful and focused and shows them how to live a sabbatical life. Then they start seeing sales increase, relationships strengthen, and overall health improve. You can often find Lori in her sanctuary, aka the weight room at the gym. She also loves cupcakes, Thai food, and classic rock music. I’ve already spoken about meditation quite a bit on this show with a few different guests. And the truth is, it comes up so often because . . . it works. Especially for handling all the challenges midlife can bring. It helps us find, discover, and reconnect with our Center. In this episode, Lori and I talk about the immense transformative powers of gratitude and meditation. I found it really valuable and I hope you do as well. SOLO: Licking Life & The Importance of Experiential Learning

6/13/2023
This week is another solo episode. I really like doing these. It gives me a chance to not only have an – what feels like – intimate conversation with you, but a few moments of reflection with myself. Today I set up a piece I wrote almost 4 years ago on the heels of one of the most transformational experiences of my life. At the core, it’s about the importance of experiential learning. Of course, reading books and listening to a bajillion podcasts is really helpful and informative for gaining knowledge. I've listened to a bajillion podcasts and love them so much I started my own! But there is NOTHING, like taking a risk and putting yourself into an experience that has the possibility to change your life. Getting yourself out of the way of what may be uncomfortable, to open up to what your life could be like on the other side of that discomfort and fear. That's what this episode -- and really this show -- is about. Enjoy the show and listen to the end because I have a special announcement for you. How to Improve Brain Fog, Memory and Mood with Allison Liu

6/6/2023
When you get to be our age, the health of your brain becomes a little more…noticeable. Looking for your deodorant in the refrigerator. Walking out of one room to get something and when you get to the next room where the thing is supposed to be, you can’t remember what it was you came into that room for. Just me? No probably not. Well, today’s conversation is with Allison Liu, a brain health coach and expert in helping women reclaim their mental sharpness and improve their energy and mood. Allison herself struggled with brain fog and panic attacks in her early 50s. Forgetting what she was saying in the middle of saying it, finding it hard to express herself and feeling increasingly irritable, she felt she was losing her sense of self. Adopting a science-based approach, which she uses with her clients today, she increased her own ‘brain reserve’, improving her memory, mood and relationships. She now coaches women in their 40s and beyond to achieve the same so that they can handle life’s challenges with ease, face the future with confidence, and fully engage in life at work and at home. Her mission: Staying sharp for life. Allison goes over the 11 risk factors for keeping our brains healthy and she gives us the top 3 pillars to focus on for cultivating healthy brain function. And one of the most surprising we discussed — cognitive decline begins WAY earlier than any of us imagined. Decades before it will start showing symptoms. So even though we can’t see the physical manifestations of our brain health like we can see our muscles when we work them out, this is one of the most important areas to focus on in our aging process. Because it has an impact on EVERY system in the body. And stay tuned because Allison gives us a generous offer at the end – don ‘t miss it! Please enjoy this conversation with me and Allison Liu. How to Have an Unstoppable 30-Year Relationship

5/30/2023
Hi friends. Today we have a very special guest on the show. My husband of 28 years, Scott. We sat down in our dining room with no real agenda, turned on the camera and just started talking. Raw, organic, unscripted. A behind the scenes inside our marriage. This is real-time conversation touching on the question we get asked the most: “How do you do it? How do you have such a great relationship after 30 years of being together?” This episode dives into one of the key principles we believe is the cornerstone of a strong, loving, nurturing, and thriving relationship. The idea of occurring. This is a principle Scott uses regularly with his corporate coaching clients and I incorporate it as well with my clients and in my work, as it translates across any relationship: from the boardroom to the bedroom. You’ll also hear a VERY personal story about a time when he asked me a really tough question and was profoundly impacted by the answer. It’s a question we believe all partners should ask each other, but most won’t. Yet it has the ability to produce massive shifts in your relationship. At the end, we also talk about a retreat for couples we are creating in September of this year, to be held at our Zen Mountain Lodge here in Boulder. You can find out more at www.the playground.love . Please enjoy this lively conversation and reach out to me if you want to know more about the retreat or what the possibility of working together could look like. Solo Time: Permission to Pause

5/9/2023
I'm trying something different this week. A mini, solo episode, unscripted, unedited...more like a short, intimate conversation just between you and me. Some of the private, in-the-moment thoughts I feel called to share. This first one is about taking a sacred pause. It's my permission slip for you, right now, to take a break. Because we get to do that ya know? Amid all that life throws at us, invites us into, lobs our way...we still get to slow down and take a deep breath. To take it all in. To look around and see what's actually happening. To wonder if we are where we want to be. And to celebrate what is going really Well. Yes, we get to do that too. I hope you enjoy. I'd love to know what you think and what your pause looks like. Your Body Knows: Intuitive Eating with Pam Moore

4/11/2023
At this point in our lives, I would confidently say most women have tried most to all the eating trends. I’m not going to even call them diets anymore, because they actually do feel like trends because the science seems to constantly be changing. Not faulting science. It’s just as technology grows and we are able to dial in precision medicine, it can make what we are “supposed” to be eating that much more confusing. This is why I lean into and encourage women to listen to the wisdom of our own bodies. No matter what everyone else is doing. This week on the podcast, I’m joined by Pam Moore. Pam is an occupational therapist-turned-intuitive eating coach and health and fitness journalist who lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband and two daughters. As an intuitive eating coach, her mission is to help women stop micromanaging their food and exercise so they can start fully showing up to their lives. The author of There's No Room for Fear in a Burley Trailer, Pam's writing has also been published in The Washington Post, Runner's World, SELF, The Guardian, Time, Outside, AARP, and Forbes, among others. Despite, or more likely because of, being picked last for every team as a kid, Pam is also a certified personal trainer, six-time marathoner, and two-time Ironman finisher. Her podcast, Real Fit, features conversations with women athletes about body image, enoughness, and more. Pam’s newsletter, Real Nourished, features evidence-based tools to reduce food-related anxiety, improve body image, and embrace exercise as a form of nourishment instead of punishment. This is a fun and informative discussion about trusting the wisdom of our bodies and our own intuition. Please enjoy my conversation with intuitive eating coach, Pam Moore. Spontaneous Combustion: How and Why Women Mismanage Their Health with Susan Salenger

Did you know that in the 1700s some people believed that menopause caused women to be vulnerable to spontaneous combustion? Yes, that a woman in menopause could just drop into a pile of ash. I mean, seriously. This story among many other fascinating topics are in the wonderful book Sidelined: How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health. And this conversation is with the researcher and author of that book, Susan Salenger. Sidelined examines the many ways in which some women manage and sometimes mismanage their healthcare. Women are notoriously putting everything and everyone else’s needs in front of their own. In the book, she references a study which ranks where women put themselves in order of priority when it comes to health care: 1. Children (of course) 2. Pets 3. Elderly parents 4. Partner/Spouse 5. Ourselves. How in the world do we expect to take care of all those other humans and non-humans if we aren’t taking proper care of ourselves? And is it any wonder we feel this way after knowing the history of how women’s bodies and health have been perceived for the past few thousand years? The final chapter of Sidelined gives a really interesting overview of how women's bodies and health have been perceived through time. It made me laugh out loud and honestly seethe with anger. Susan explores how women, typically the medical gatekeepers for their families, tend to be extremely conscientious about taking care of themselves, yet at the same time inadvertently undermine their own care. They often hesitate to call the doctor when they don’t feel well and worry that their doctor visit will take time away from their families or work. They may hesitate to ask doctors the necessary questions and don’t always comply with the doctor’s instructions. Salenger’s research reveals how conflicted many women are about the medical decisions they ultimately make. This was an absolutely delightful conversation with a very inspiring woman. Susan is not only an author, she’s also a powerlifter at 80-years-old, and is taking Latin dance lessons. She is my kind of lady. LIFE STORY: Honoring Your Path and The Power of Entheogens with Ana Jaia

2/21/2023
The prospect of healing with psychedelic medicines and entheogens has been making mainstream news for a while now. In fact, my new home state of Colorado just passed (fall 2022) a bill legalizing the personal use of Psilocybin (mushrooms.) There is a steady stream of research coming out proving the efficacy and usefulness of a lot of these medicines to help heal trauma and many other psychological issues. Probably the most well known is the MAPS program. (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) If you have ever been interested in this modality or are just really curious about the new flurry of attention directed at these molecules for the purpose of healing, this episode is for you. Please meet, Ana Jaia, or as some of her clients have called her, “the archeologist of the subconscious.” She has become an incredibly special person in my life with an absolutely incredible story. She is a truth teller and gifted healer who shoots straight with a gigantic heart. Ana’s life mission is to help people remember who they are. Her spiritual path started in her early 20s after she moved from her homeland of Mexico to the U.S. to study music. Her mission became even clearer when she was summoned by the plant teachers to give her gift of service to communities in an even deeper way. Her education spans a wide range of modalities. In addition to being a certified Life Coach, her training includes, Sound Healing, Reiki, Pranic Healing, Shadow Work, Quantum Healing, Psych-K and Ho’oponopono to name a few. Ana weaves decades of experiential education and curriculum development with the teachings of plant and earth allies in order to co-create The New Paradigm Mystery School. Within this context she guides participants toward reconnecting to their ancestral roots and remembering their true calling. Ana’s commitment to deep listening has led her down the path of teaching, helping people heal individually and in groups. She has most recently turned toward the profound responsibility of becoming an elder to her community. Just a few highlights from this very real, honest and raw conversation: Referenced in the episode: How to Change Your Mind by Michael Pollan This book was also made into a series on Netflix, starring Michael Pollan Connect with Ana Jaia: Email :: ana@thewellofwellbeing.com Connect with Angie: Website|www.angiebyrd.com Instagram| https://instagram.com/angie.byrd YouTube| https://youtube.com/@angiebyrd Subscribe to Angie’s Newsletter: www.angiebyrd.com/subscribe
