On this episode of Preaching the Text, John Hoyum and Steve Paulson discuss Christ's prayer to the Father before his betrayal and crucifixion. In this prayer, we overhear the Son's address to his Father in love. To preach on Christ's prayer, they talk about how to take the address of Son to Father concerning those Christ has won, and turn it around into a promise given to those who belong to Christ. We find here that while Peter gives the correct answer to the question Jesus poses to him, Peter remains resistant to the coming event of salvation which is to come through the cross and the resurrection. To preach this text, the preacher has to recognize the resistance of the old sinful nature to the suffering of Christ which takes away the sins of the world.
