Dr Jooste believes that we are all athletes in our own right and should treat our body as the beautiful vessel that it is. Todays guest is Dr Juan Janse van Nieuwenhuizen, a Clinical Neurophysiologist specializing in sleep medicine. He is no stranger to self improvement for the betterment of the patient. Alongside his PhD in Neurophysiology, he has also completed a BTech in Clinical Neurophysiology, enabling him to practice as a Neurophysiologist at his practice. When he's not seeing patients, you can find him filling the role of Senior lecturer in the Dept. of Biomedical Sciences at the Tshwane University of Technology. As healthcare professionals, we are often in search of more time as it’s a field well known for its long hours and busy schedules. This leads us to often neglect sleep, an important factor in our own health. Dr Janse van Nieuwenhuizen dives deep in the intricacies of sleep, and why it’s important to keep in mind how we schedule rest in to our daily lives. We discuss why caffeine is a staple in the lives of many and why it’s seen as a method to negate fatigue. We also discuss different pathologies that could create imbalance in ones sleep pattern. Welcome to the first episode of 2023! Our discussion today is about life as a Trauma Surgeon, and how your purpose often comes in unexpected ways through life experience. Our guest on todays episode is Professor George Oosthuizen. Prof Oosthuizen is a registered Trauma Surgeon and Chief Specialist in Surgery at Ngwelezana Hospital in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa. He is also an Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of KwaZulu Natal and an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Queen Mary University of London. He was also the former Trauma Program Director of the Pan African Academy of Christian Surgeons(PAACS) and the former President of the Trauma Society of South Africa. Prof Oosthuizen gives us insight into the journey to becoming a Trauma Surgeon for those that are interested in following this path. Being a Trauma Surgeon comes with heartache and loss and as a Doctor we are always confronted with important discussions with patients and their family members.
