From Vegas Little League to the Pros Donta' Williams is Fireworks

5/6/2024
I spoke with Donta' Williams of the Bowie Baysox on this Black Baseball Mixtape podcast episode. Donta' is a Las Vegas native. He played college baseball at the University of Arizona and was a 4th Round draft pick of the O's in 2021. Donta and I talk about his personal journey to pro ball and the importance of a strong foundation in the game. Donta' had excellent leadership from his youth coach, Coach Ceasar in Vegas, and his family. Without that leadership, he would not be where he is today. He also shares his love for a VA natvie in Jackie Bradley Jr. Being from VA myself, I love to hear that. This episode is filled with authentic conversation and support. It should be shared with every young player who dreams of making the pros but has been doubted along the way. This episode is brought to you by BBM in partnership with Steelo Sports, the Players Alliance, Herencia 21 (caps), and Numbers Game (scorecards). If you'd like to partner with BBM, please email BlackBaseballMixtape@gmail.com. Please share, rate, and review this episode. Thanks.

Guardians Prospect Kahlil Watson Joins the Black Baseball Mixtape Podcast

4/18/2024
On this episode, Cheats talks with the #14 prospect in the Guardians organization, former 2021 1st-round draft pick Kahlil Watson. Watson is a Virginia native with strong ties to the Commonwealth. He grew up playing in adult leagues all around the Tri-Cities region. He was in Richmond last week with the Akron RubberDucks (AA). It was his first time playing professionally before many family and friends, and K-Wat brought the community out. During the episode, we discuss his upbringing, how he fell in love with baseball, his professional development, and much more. Kahlil talks a lot about his current opportunity with the Guardians organization and unlocking his full potential. Watson, who just turned 21 this week, has a bright future in baseball. I have a feeling we will all hear his name for many years. In the Booth with Flobo Boyce: Special Guest Mia from Black Girls Love Baseball

4/15/2024
On this episode of In the Booth with Flobo Boyce, Flobo is joined by Mia from Black Girls Love Baseball. What started as a fun side project has become one of baseball's more engaging social media platforms. Black Girls Love Baseball follows the adventures of Mia and her friends as they show their Atlanta Braves fandom throughout MLB. Flobo and Mia discuss the platform, its origins, and future plans. They spar over what team has the meanest fans and whether the Braves mascot is a carbon imitation of the Philly Phanatic (you make the call). Orioles Upper-Level Hitting Coordinator Sherman Johnson Joins the BBM Podcast

4/8/2024
Sherman Johnson, AKA Coach Sherm or Sherm, is a natural leader. He's played at every level of baseball and became a hitting instructor with the Orioles last year. This season, at the age of 33, Sherm accepted the position of Upper-Level Hitting Coordinator. Sherm works with every level within the organization. While he is gaining experience daily, I was in Norfolk to see him work with the hard-hitting Tides. I marveled at his ability to relate to the young prospects while commanding their attention during instruction. He has earned respect among the vets, who are very close to his age. Sherm is a sure-fire future manager one day. I'm sure you will enjoy this episode. Steelo Sports and Herencia21 bring this episode to you—a special thanks to the Players Alliance. What's the best baseball movie of all time? Of course, there is no 100% right answer, so this is what we did at the Black Baseball Mixtape. We asked the BBM community to list their best baseball films and the top 8 were: The Sandlot, Major League, A League of Their Own, Bingo Long, Soul of the Game, Hardball, 42, and Field of Dreams. Angels Prospect Werner Blakely is Determined to have his Best Year Ever

3/11/2024
Detroit Stand Up! We got The D's own Werner Blakely on this Black Baseball Mixtape podcast episode. Werner, 22, has moved to primarily 3rd base this spring. He looks to break camp in AA and bounce back from what he described as a challenging 2023. Werner is the first (and only) High School Under Armor All-American baseball player from Detroit. He was drafted in the 4 round of the 2020 draft and signed with the Angels instead of attending Auburn University. Werner quickly succeeded in pro ball, being named an Arizona Fall League Rising Star (All-Star) in 2022. In 2023, he struggled a little at the plate but still managed to swipe 22 bases on 23 attempts. Werner is more focused than ever heading into 2024. You will hear it throughout this podcast: he is determined to have the best season ever. I'm excited to introduce you to Werner and hear about his journey to this point in his career. Please subscribe to the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast on Apple Podcast and everywhere podcasts are available. Spencer Bivens (RHP, Giants) Is the Definition of Never Give Up

3/4/2024
There were plenty of times when Spencer Bivens thought his baseball career could be over, but the right-handed pitcher kept his options -- and his heart -- open to the next opportunity. That determination and drive guided him from Community College to playing overseas, independent baseball, and ultimately signing with the Giants organization. At first glance, the slim, 6'5, 29-year-old - with model looks - doesn't compare much to the fictional journeyman Forrest Gump, but Bivens journey may rival the Academy Award-winning film. On this episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast, Cheats visits with Bivens to hear about his journey and talk all things baseball. It's a true story of grit and passion. Bivens is now in mini-camp with the Giants and is picking up innings in Spring Training. His quest is far from over. I'm excited to follow the next chapter. Please subscribe to the Black Baseball Mixtape. Your comments and ratings are genuinely appreciated. Special thanks to Steelo Media, the Players Alliance, and Herencia21. Finding MLB's Next Black GM: Live with Tyrone Brooks (MLB) at the Cactus Jack HBCU Classic

2/23/2024
On this special bonus episode of the Black Baseball Mixtape podcast, I caught up with one of my very first guests and one of my favorite people in all of MLB, Tyrone Brooks. Tyrone is MLB's Senior Director, Front Office and Field Staff Diversity Pipeline Program at Major League Baseball. That is a very fancy way of saying that his job is to find and help develop the next minority executives in MLB. I saw Tyrone in Houston, where he spoke to each HBCU team playing in the Cactus Jack about a possible career path after baseball. The unique part was that he told the current players about former players who were in their seats last year and now work in MLB. The program is working, it just needs people to understand, working in baseball may be the right career for you. If you like this episode, please like, subscribe, and share. I'd like to thank Steelo Sports, the Players Alliance, and Herencia 21.

2/5/2024
KSU is the preseason #24 team in the country. On this episode of the BBM Podcast, I am joined by Associate Head Coach Austin Wates. Wates, 35, has been with the KSU program for six years, but this is his first year as Associate Head Coach.
