79. AI + the Salon: The Future Has Never Been Closer

5/8/2024
This was recorded the evening before I presented a talk on AI to Intercoiffure America Canada members at their spring conference in Montreal this week. This episode was inspired by that talk on where we may be headed as an industry relative to the evolution of Artificial Intelligence and what it might mean for salons and pros.

78. Destroying More B**LS**T (Sorry!)

5/1/2024
Apologies in advance for going down this rabbit hole but hearing the anti-retail coaches suddenly promote in-salon retail stopped me in my tracks - for about a minute. On closer listen, it became clear that this change of heart was not what it seemed. Listen in for my take on the reality of traditional vs 'private label/white label' retail models - and more.

76. DESTROY THE B**LS**T

4/17/2024
"Change" is more often than not a good thing - and is essential for any business to thrive in the long term. Having said this, with change comes risk - perhaps today more than ever given the amount of industry-related misinformation being spread far and wide by too many. In this episode, I dig into the 'methodology' of one coaching group (per a recent IG post), offer my take on the thinking behind some of these ideas, and more. Buckle up and listen in!

75. Pro Beauty: Who's in Charge(and more!)

4/10/2024
My riff on recent social media posts by salons, pros, & coaches mistakenly calling out the 'men running the beauty industry'; my defense of brands (against the misinformed blaming them for 'everything') plus my view that signs are bubbling up that could be signaling that the suite category may be in trouble in 2025.

Sam is an early adopter of artificial intelligence who shares Gordon's belief that the technology is going to have a far-reaching impact on the business of beauty - as it will upon our larger world. 74. "Your Hair Looks Gorgeous... It Cost What?!" - Washington Post, 3/19

3/27/2024
The Washington Post recently ran a feature story about the rising costs to clients of salon services and the negative reactions by many - including some professionals -to what is seen as a trend. In this episode, I go through some of the key points in the article (many of which do not make me happy!) to add needed context. My take somewhat aligns with the article - which hypothesizes that salons are facing challenges related to the price increases many have implemented. The bottom line: this is becoming a hot-button issue for salons losing clients (and revenue), seemingly in reaction to their steep increases in pricing.

73. The Nobility of Service

3/20/2024
So much destructive coach chatter across the industry trying to diminish the value of 'service' - weirdly saying to the press: 'We are sick of being service providers and want to get back to the artistry of what we do". The implication is that 'service' is a new idea (it's not!) that takes away from the profession. My take: remove great service from the 'experience' and home haircare is sure to explode to even greater heights(and the AI robots will applaud the lapse in judgment). Listen in for my quick take on the critical need to double down on service as a point of difference separating you from the many who are quickly moving away from this long-time, proven revenue driver.

72. Your Productivity vs Capacity, Part 2, with @michaelcole_summit

3/13/2024
In a rare break from my solo chat model for this podcast, business educator and coach extraordinaire Michael Cole joins me to 'geek out' in reaction to my recent episode talking about the importance of using metrics around the big idea of production versus capacity (to produce) - and what the numbers may tell you about how your business is faring day-to-day.

71. Foundations: Success Drivers

3/6/2024
A key success driver of most of the successful people I know is their good fortune to have built a strong foundation from which to grow. In prep for a recent panel i hosted for SalonCentric at the Bronner Bros show, i shared my list of 3 key elements of building upon your foundation - Passion, Perspective and Passion. Listen in for my take on this topic - as well as an updated (and quick) 'bad coaches' rant.

ENCORE: #40 Search is Changing. Are you?

2/28/2024
Google search is now 25+ years old -and, for the first time, has competition that could drive innovation in how consumers and businesses use the web and other platforms. Over time, we have adapted our presence online and across social platforms to meet ever-changing algorithms driving search and discovery. With the advent of more advanced AI, many project big changes in how we use 'search'. In this episode, I share thoughts on what it might mean for salons and professionals. 70. A Big Idea: Your Productivity vs Capacity

2/21/2024
If time truly is money in our pro lives, then our 'capacity' represents the maximum amount of time that we have to generate revenue. Productivity, on the other hand, drives the reality of your financial outcomes - the difference being your potential for financial growth at this moment. The solution to closing the gaps? Finding efficiencies. This is my geeky take on a critical topic that doesn't get enough attention.

68. Artistry vs Service (or Creativity + Compassion)

2/7/2024
Today perhaps more than ever, there is tension by many (inside of the industry) between the ideas of artistry and service. Most concerning is what seems to be the opinion of many that these are mutually exclusive ideas - that we cannot be artists as well as 'service providers'. On that point, I've never heard a consumer call us with either of these terms. Both to me are inside the industry terms - as the public tends to call us their 'hairdressers, stylists and/or barbers'. A short rant on some big and important ideas around these industry conversations.

67. Inflation: It's COMPLICATED

1/31/2024
Part 3 of my look back at 2023 - and how we too often seem to be our own worst enemies coming out of the dysfunction of the pandemic era. Inflation is today's main topic - and my opinion that misinformation and misunderstandings are at the root of miscalculations by too many have kept the industry from growing in 2023.

66. 2023 Rehash Continued (+) the Math of Independence (and More)

1/24/2024
I continue where i left off in Episode 64 - plus dig into how to think about the math of independence and setting prices. Arguably these two topics are industry-wide 'Achilles Heels'. For added context: when successful pros move to independence unprepared, their income will often fall. Multiply this times tens of thousands and the impact on the industry can be far-reaching. The same is true of price increases: if a large percentage of those controlling prices in salons choose not to keep pace with inflation, the impact on the larger industry can be significant. As an example, the larger percentage of traditional salons not keeping up with inflation in the past likely has fueled interest in independence as wages in those salons then also did not keep pace with the cost of living. Something to ponder.

65. The Year that was 2023: What Happened & Why

1/17/2024
2023 was a crazy year: Lots of success stories but perhaps even more failure (and mostly confusion over what it all might mean). My take relative to those who struggled: "overcorrection" of pricing, shifting of boundaries, and too many jumping unprepared into self-employment. For those who did well, the big ideas seem to align with pre-pandemic core success drivers: Great SERVICE and customer CARE....tied to a bit of hustle. ENCORE: #46 The Power in Choices (Independence vs Employment)

1/10/2024
Perhaps one of the most important questions any professional can ask themselves today is "Which business model is best for my career?" The answer is rarely simple - as the larger realities around the categories remain very much a mystery from a data perspective. Importantly, this episode features a mostly high-level look at the process that I suggest most follow in sorting through their aspirations and related options. Thanks to Nashville hairdresser @mikedenton for encouraging me to begin to tackle this big topic.
