We welcomed Dr. Lachlan James and Dr. Steven Duhig onto the All Things Speed & Strength Podcast. This episode was guest co-hosted by Dr. Patrick Holmberg. Lachlan James is a Senior Lecturer, Sport Scientist, and Course Coordinator of the Master of Strength and Conditioning degree at La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. He received his PhD in Sport Science in 2017 and has published over 40 peer reviewed articles, including 25 as first or senior author. He currently supervises 7 PhD students with research projects in the AFL, Super Rugby, Queensland Academy of Sport, the A-League and with VALD Performance. Episode 10 features 3 full-time strength coaches from Orange Lutheran High School in Orange, California (located in Southern California). We packed up and took the show on the road to get some insights into one of the most elite strength programs in the country, led by Bubba Reynolds, Chase Sanders, and Ryan Nguyen. They are blessed with one of the most accommodating weight rooms you'll see in the high school setting, but the system they've built and the training they provide is what really makes them stand apart. With a student-athlete base of around 700-800 athletes, they provide strength and conditioning to 18 teams on campus. We discussed several aspects of his training philosophy and how that manifests into programming for the rotational athlete and training for improving throwing velocity and hitting power. He touches on his 2022 journey of attempting to get 1,000 timed sprints and what he learned from doing that; we primarily discussed how he uses force-velocity profiling to determine areas of deficiency to drive loading and exercise selection, utilizing different modalities to train for power (including Medicine Balls, the Proteus, and Strength Training). We also got into how he uses a crane scale to measure strength in more unique positions, and how he can use that for performance testing as well as readiness for a pitcher and monitoring fatigue in specific positions.
