The Bee Keeper Podcast

Science Podcasts

My podcast is about practical beekeeping today. As a beekeeper I have 40 hives over 4 apiaries. All my colony increases are as a result of splits and supported by frames of capped brood from taken swarms. Varroa Resistant Queens are reared from colonies that also display strong over wintering, early build up …..so great personalities. All my apiaries are in a rural farm setting with woods, flower meadows, farm crops and several villages within foraging range for the Bees. Our excess grafted varroa resistant queens we sell to local beekeepers. In spring we sell over wintered 5 frame nucs with varroa resistant queens. The nucs are not a jigsaw of frames from different colonies and they must have at least 3 weeks of new capped brood so we know the queen is in great shape. And finally we work with companies that feel it good to have bees on their properties, from providing the colonies, specifying the hive hardware , regular weekly visits and shorts videos. We can mentor the companies new beekeepers. tonyfox.substack.com

Planning for Spring 2024

1/6/2024
Planning how to achieve your bee keeping targets for each year starts well before spring, many would say that a strong start to beekeeping in spring is assured by the correct action during the previous August and September. The creation of nucleus colonies that over winter well allows a beekeeper to start the year even before new mated queens come available. Planning for Spring 2024 is my thought process through the route to full apiaries with large colonies in readiness for spring foraging. It’s all down to the start the over wintered nucs provide. Advent and Feeding

At the end of recording this episode I want to mention the background song and chatter of our Budgie. She or maybe he enjoys company and today was clearly keen to join in. I will do a spoken apiary report which can only be accessed by going to my substack page. I felt the podcast would be too long if I included it at the end. As with all podcasts please hit the like button, make a comment and share if you can. I will answer any questions. Regards Tony This is a public episode.
