ICSs have existed in one form or another since 2016, but for most of this time have operated as informal partnerships using soft power and influence to achieve their objectives. Following the passage of the 2022 Health and Care Act, ICSs were formalised as legal entities with statutory powers and responsibilities. Personalised care means that patients have more control and choice when it comes to the way their care is planned and delivered, taking into account individual needs, preferences and circumstances. It is a whole system approach that enables a variety of services across the health, social care, public health and community spectrum to be integrated around the individual in order to deliver better outcomes and experiences. There are many different aspects of personalised care. Shared decision making between clinicians and patients – working collaboratively to reach a decision about treatment that best suits the patient. Across Suffolk and northeast Essex, the ReSPECT process (Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment) is being introduced to replace 'Do Not Attempt Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation' orders. ReSPECT, which will launch in March 2023, hopes to create personalised recommendations for a person’s clinical care and treatment in a future emergency in which they are unable to make or express choices.
