“Surviving Survivor” with Caroline Courtis

5/5/2024
Australian Survivor, a long running incredibly loved TV Series. Loved for its heart thumping challenges, unbelievable (and at times seemingly unbearable) living circumstances for its players, and the endless unfolding drama from alliances and the double crosses of those trying to win at tribal council. In this season of Titan’s Vs Rebels, Caroline Courtis entered the game - A 55yr old woman, mum of 3 and midwife, who was finally in a place in her life where she was ready to do something truly for her and test herself in the ultimate way. 47 days stranded in Samoa with 24 contestants, split into two tribes - ‘Titans’, a tribe made up of career leaders, and ‘Rebels’ a tribe made up of the free spirited who forged new paths, were lead to compete, then ultimately merge for the win, as the two tribes dwindled after each tribal council and Caroline made it to the final 2 and the final Tribal Council. The question begs - who would want to push themselves like this? And what were the driving factors in the life before Survivor that pushed them to do so? Caroline was in a place where she had every right to sit back a little and smell the roses, but she didn’t, she chose to put the very so often benched middle aged women on our TV screens in one of the worlds hardest TV challenge games and push herself to her limits. Although being questioned by a fellow tribe member for ‘what she actually brought to the game’, Caroline managed to show the world the years of raising a family, being at the forefront of thousands of births and in a dedicated career care role, brought a strength, tenacity and resilience that only a wife, mum and woman in her 50’s could. “Managing The Mental Load” with Verity Tuck

4/21/2024
Book Week dress up day, gold coin donation day, Parent teacher interviews, Sally performing in school assembly, Jack’s birthday party and Charlie’s basketball match.. all in one day! Then add in your work schedule, the household management and general family and parenting planning. When and how did our lives get so overloaded? The daily to do list as a parent has become extreme, as opportunity, technology and pace have sped up over generations. For the majority this falls mostly on the mum, and whilst the kids are at school, and really until their self sufficient adults, it doesn’t end. Verity Tuck, a woman and mum, that managed to successfully build up and ultimately sell her online same day flower delivery service LVLY, decided to stop and smell the roses for a while after the sale of her first start up. Verity moved her family North of Australia to be beachside and try a new hand at life after what was an exhaustive process of selling her start up. It was during that time that two things happened, Verity’s daughter had started school and what was already a juggle of Whatsapp groups, child care and kids activities, increased tenfold with school commitments and Verity and her husband Mike who were already feeling pinch of parental pressure, felt it creep up to a new level. All the while, whilst taking time out of being the engine room of a business, Verity could feel the fire in her belly to do something in the start up world again, and felt driven to tackle what she could feel was the cause family life chaos and tackle a cure for the mental load with new technology. The saying ‘it takes a village’ is fact for people raising children, but not all of us have access to that village, so in the new world of technology, Verity and her husband Mike, were ready to build the village via tech, and support the overwhelming mental load of parents. “Realising Your Financial Equity” with Rebecca Pritchard

3/31/2024
In Australia, women approaching retirement have about 23% less superannuation than men. As a figure that means approx. a $17 Billion gap, and it’s currently being investigated by the Australian government to understand how the gap has gotten so great. To reflect upon how the gap has occurred, it’s seems glaringly obvious. In Australia, currently there is a 12% gender pay gap within the work force, meaning that on average in a fulltime job, for every dollar a man earns, a woman earns .88cents. Then to account for the unavoidable biology, women are out of the work force for extended periods of time during their child bearing years, with a staggering majority not returning to full time work due to undertaking the carer role of their children, if not additionally, their ageing parents. And to top it off, in Australia, 1 in 10 women leave the workforce due to unmanageable peri-menopause or menopause symptoms that can start to occur in their 40’s onwards. In review, when you summarise the above of forced time out of the workforce versus earning capacity, it’s clear it is limited, especially in comparison to a males ability to work continuously if he so chooses. That’s where Rebecca Pritchard, an Award Winning Senior Financial Planner at Rising Tide Leading Financial Experts strongly advises women to review their position, including doing the due diligence that’s needed to split their partners superannuation. When asked the question about what is the point in practical terms, as if their partner passes away or they divorce, it will ultimately be equalised, Rebecca responded with “women need to start valuing our moral equity!”. If our wages are unequal and our working capacity is limited due to child bearing, and then the majority are undertaking the carer role where there is no financial value placed and it inhibits earning capacity, then how does all of that effect our self worth if society and the financial world doesn’t place value on it? In the broader picture and financial world, the system and structure hasn’t placed equitable value on a woman’s time out of the workforce, or the carer role, but change is coming with the Australian Government announcing taxpayers taxes will fund superannuation payments on paid parental leave, and that’s a good place to start. But we speak with Rebecca on the broad picture of how the value of a dollar can hold a value on your sense of self, so if you can make financial and administrative changes in your personal money management, it could shift the value you place on your contribution to your household, and in-turn build your financial and emotional self worth. “Courage, Confidence and Consent” with Chanel Contos

3/17/2024
Consent. It’s seems simple, like it is already a known standard protocol of decent human behaviour, but here we are, in 2024 with statistics like these - More than half of Australian women in their twenties have experienced sexual violence, 97% of girls and women in Australia have experienced street harassment, 1 in 5 women in Australia have been raped, with only 5% of women reporting sexual assault and only 1.7 % of sexual assault cases resulting in a conviction. These statistics are only a few that are outlined in Chanel Contos’ book ‘Consent Laid Bare’. Chanel, a young women that one night was sitting around with her girlfriends sharing the tragic tales of hook ups gone bad, only to realise it was scarily common and if her and her friends were masking sexual assault traumas that had occurred under the guise of being the socially acceptable ‘norm’, just how many more women are there? So at the age of 22, she took to Instagram to respectfully poll the question of what was other girls and women’s experiences, only to have such a response that her social media account exploded. From there, Chanel and her friends did a crowd fund and raised $90,000, which then help build a website and set up the petition teachusconsent.com. Chanel encouraged girls and women to leave their stories of sexual assault by naming only the perpetrators age and school. Nearly 3 years on and 7,000 testimonies, every previously hidden story has helped create data to push for change, which is exactly what is happening. Chanel and Teachusconsent.com has reformed education in schools, with consent education now being mandatory in all Australian schools from kindergarten to year 10. They have lead the charge with now making stealthing (where a male removes his condom without consent during intercourse) illegal, and received funding to create consent education material in collaboration with not-for-profit, Our Watch. So the question lies, how does one woman manage to make such change? How do you cope when the world turns to you for guidance on what is one of the most weighing and distressing topics? And what does Chanel think is the seed for true societal change for today, as well as the generations to come? “Two Sisters, Breast Cancer and the BRCA Gene” with Ellie Rogers and Lisa Bardas

3/3/2024
1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. To delve into this is to better understand the BRCA gene (aka BReast CAncer gene) which is gene that produces proteins to help repair damaged DNA. But the BRCA gene can mutate, and if a mutation occurs, not only does it continue down the bloodlines of families, but your chances increase by 45% to 85% for developing breast cancer in your lifetime, along with a 10% to 46% chance of ovarian cancer. This is where the power of Two sisters steps in. Lisa Bardas and Ellie Rogers are two sisters that were faced with discovering their larger family were all carriers of the mutated BRCA gene, when Ellie was diagnosed with breast cancer. They made the incredibly bold and brave decision to undergo a double mastectomy and uterus removal, in a bid to live. They then took it further by founding Two Sisters Foundation, in a bid to make genetic testing for the BRCA gene available as an open preventative test, to allow for time and in-turn choice for prevention measures, not only for their own children, but for everyone, and make the concept of testing for only the considered ‘high risk’, or testing when diagnosed with cancer, obsolete. These two women, are an example of strength and the power of what can be overcome and faced, as Two Sisters. “The Ultimate Lifestyle Change” with Tori Allen

12/3/2023
When you finish School or Uni you are an individual that either has a job to try and keep an income, or you start making steps towards calving out a career for yourself. For Tori Allen who is the founder of her self titled company, Tori Allen - a Creative Studio that specialises in events, activations and celebrations, it started with Tori working as a visual merchandiser retail, then a floral pop up shop, and custom floral arrangements for events from her apartment. Now it’s a big business with staff, National events, and a long list of returning clients, all the while Tori was getting married and having 3 children and juggling the trajectory she started when she was an individual in her 20’s. But once you have a partner and kids, there is more to contemplate and it’s fair to say, compromise on. For Tori, it was time to follow her husband’s lead with his work commitments, as well as following her internal inkling that something had to shift and a desire to be more present with the kids - so they accepted a work placement in Fiji committing to at least a year and a grand adventure. Fast forward to now, and ‘Bula Time’ has forced Tori to slow down from the racy urban life that running an events business in a city is, to a much more simpler slower family life. Whilst still running the business from a far, the ultimate sea change has shone new reflections on how sometimes you don’t always need to keep on the same trajectory, and exploring new ways of raising a young family, and what work could be in your life, can lead to a new lease on life. “Ditching Corporate for Career Creative" with Alex McCabe

11/5/2023
Growing up as kids, after school activities or weekends are spent developing your interests. Some lean into sports, others further their studies, or some are encouraged by their family to follow their creativity. Alex McCabe, Co-Founder of Global Bedding and Homewares Brand Kip & Co. often spent weekends creating arts and crafts to sell at the local market, and throughout school and uni she relished music and singing, but Alex is also fortunate to be academically inclined. For the most part, if you have brains, school helps you develop and hone in on academia, and then that translates very well into the post school/uni world of a career corporate. Fast forward to that time, where Alex is an established lawyer, and steps back to reflect on how she got there, the missing piece of her inner creative and in-turn what she wanted to change. Whilst it took steps, risks and chances, she moved slowly towards a career that fulfilled her more fully. Aligned with her two best friends who are sisters, they came together as a trio, inspired to create a small business that wove together the fabrics of what they had learnt in their individual journeys, and then Kip & Co was born. What was a side hustle, starting with a limited range, to now a Global Bedding and Homewares brand vibrant with colour and creativity, they share the juggle together, affording each other flexibility to be women and mother’s and inspiring each other by their individual capabilities and contribution.
