30. Oral Cancer Awareness Month: Dr. Scott Edison

4/30/2024
When we think of oral cancer, we often picture a seasoned smoker or a long-time tobacco user. But did you know that a growing number of cases are affecting young, non-smokers? Over 20% of oral cancer diagnoses occur in people under 55, and the culprit might not be what you expect. The rise in instances is linked to Human papillomavirus (HPV) from unprotected oral sex, not tobacco. During Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we want to take some time to spotlight the extraordinary dentists and practitioners who have taken on this little-understood cancer and are survivors. Today's guest is Dr. Scott Edison, a Clinical Associate Professor at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. Before Scott found a lump on his neck in 2019, he didn't know all that much about head and neck cancer. Nothing makes you an expert in something more quickly than lived experience, and he set out to find out everything he could about the different types of treatment available to him. What followed was a long and painful journey. Additionally, Scott was diagnosed with prostate cancer soon after. Head and neck cancer is the 7th most common cancer globally. Symptoms may include a lump in the neck, a sore in the mouth, or a sore throat that doesn’t go away. During Oral Cancer Awareness Month, we want to take some time to spotlight the extraordinary dentists and practitioners who have taken on this little-understood cancer and survived. Today's guest is Dr. Michael R. Sesemann, a dentist, educator, and Nebraska Institute of Comprehensive Dentistry founder. Michael has been described as "the best dentist you've never heard of". He exudes a passion for his work that helped him through his cancer diagnosis. Michael served as the President of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry between 2009 and 2010, is a member of seven American dental associations, and is currently an Adjunct Faculty Member at the Kois Center. In 2018, Michael found a lump on his neck. Like many people often do, Michael didn't get it checked out right away, after being told that it was probably just caused by allergies. 20. Dr. Amanda Seay on Adversity and Grace

12/12/2023
People who show grace and poise during stressful times are often compared to a swan drifting across the water. Today's guest is Dr. Amanda Seay, an accomplished and accredited dentist and private practice owner who also educates through her training organization, imP.R.E.S. After graduating in 2011, Amanda went on to become a mentor and clinical instructor at the Kois Center. Amanda’s advice for anyone struggling with self-doubt is that "when someone sees something in you that you don't see in yourself, you need to believe them." She now mentors many early-career women, sharing her lived experience of balancing family and dentistry. As a mother of four kids, she has plenty of advice to share. 9/19/2023
The first working laser was operated by Theodore Maiman on May 16 1960 at the Hughes Research Laboratory in California. He was already thinking about a way to amplify light and its source before we had the means to do it. After their pioneering use in the 60s, it didn’t take long for medicine to take note and start testing lasers. Today's guest is Bill Brown, who became interested in lasers and their use in dentistry during that pioneering period of engineering history. Bill is one of the last men standing from the early period of lasers and their use in dentistry and he’s seen a lot of change over the years.
