Personal Bests

5/2/2024
Episode 48: Personal Bests - I'm on Team PB's... you may be Team PR's. That's fine. In no way will that diminish your extreme enjoyment of this episode. In fact, I bet you consider this one of the all time best Coach Bennett's Podcast shows. Why? Well, because this topic is awesome! That's why! Personal bests are all about people at their best. Sure, that may mean fastest. That may mean farthest. That may mean highest. But it also means so much more. This episode starts with a discussion of the #PBX concept at the recent Twilight Relays here in Portland, Oregon and the extraordinary mindset shift that that T&F meet has introduced to the sport. Then the episode talks about how you can expand the definition of PB's so every day offers you the opportunity to be your best. Thank you for listening and enjoy the show! Easy Runs

4/25/2024
Episode 47: Easy Runs - Why do I say what I say to you on an easy run? Why do I tell you to start easy? Why do I tell you to blame me for running slow? Why do I bring up effort before pace? What do I think about pace on an easy run? Why do I make you do system checks for your form and your breathing and your mindset? How do I coach the middle of an easy run? What about the end? Well, these are all great questions! How about I answer them and a few more? Let's do it! Go ahead and head out for an easy run or go for a hike or walk or just listen to this in traffic or on the train. Stop That! Start This.

4/18/2024
Episode 46: Stop That! Start This. - We do so many things that slow us down or set us back. And we don't do so many things that would set us up to move ahead. So, let's stop that all that nonsense. And let's start this a better way. We'll go over golden oldies like sleep and hydration. We'll get (not so) new age with mindset and better risk taking. We'll hit a classic like idiotic training and so much more. Hope you enjoy... no... more than that... I hope you love this episode. Cheers and thank you for listening! Questions for YOU!

4/11/2024
Episode 45: Questions For YOU! - That's right! We're flipping the script. I'm asking the questions and you are answering them. So, get ready to use that big brain of yours and ponder some sticklers and stumpers. This is a really fun episode. At least I think it is. And it's also some great training for your runs. A run should be a great conversation between your mind and body after all. And great conversations are often made up of questions and stories. This run will demand both... from you! I also think that you'll need (and want) to spend some time after the episode pondering and processing the questions I give you and the answers you give back. Especially since I ask you a bunch of followup questions to every main question I ask. Anyway, that's why I'm going to list out the main questions from the episode. So, here they are: Why do you want to run? Where is your favorite place to run? What time of year is your favorite time of year to run? Track or trails? What's the worst life advice you've ever been given? Who was/is the best teammate you've ever had? What's the hardest thing you've ever done? Do you dance differently when you are alone? If you were tasked with making one meal for people you cared about what would it be? If you could set one big goal for your running right now what would it be? Who in your life do you most believe needs an invitation to a starting line? Cheers and thank you for listening! Coach Bennett Be sure to send any and all questions and comments to the mailbag: Coach Bennett’s Podcast 9220 SW Barbur Blvd STE 119, #322 Portland, Oregon 97219 And if you need even more Coach Bennett in your life you can scratch that itch by subscribing to the Coach Bennett’s Newsletter. Running Isn't Complicated

4/4/2024
Episode 44: Running Isn't Complicated The episode is really called Running Isn't Complicated... Runners Are. But I figured brevity would be the best course to take here. The goal of episode 44 is pretty simple... some would say... wait for it... uncomplicated. So much of running is not complicated. It's a simple activity. But runners are indeed complicated. And if there is one thing that complicated people do really well is overcomplicate the things around them. That's okay! Because we can simplify. We can learn to uncomplicate. We can figure things out. (And yes, I know uncomplicate is not a real word.) In this episode some of the uncomplicated parts of running that get complicated by us humans we'll talk about and uncomplicate. Now that's a complicated sentence! So enjoy the podcast as such uncomplicated topics as getting started, how to ramp up training, motivation. running form... they all get discussed. Cheers and thank you for listening! Being Hurt

3/14/2024
Episode 41: Being Hurt This episode is inspired by so many of you asking me what has inspired the way I talk about and handle injuries. Well, we're going to need to run down one of my memory lanes. This episode begins with a story about my junior year in high school and my first serious injury that just happened to happen when I was first getting serious about running. The lessons from those 6 months when I was a (very cute... dare I say, adorable) sixteen year old are still being taught to me today. I talk about the need to work with experts, be an active participant in your healing, stay involved with the sport and your teammates, continue to cross starting lines, do those things while you're recovering that you couldn't do when you were running, and talk and write about and share your hurt. I hope thing episode about me being hurt and what I learned from being hurt can help you... whether you are hurt or not. Cheers and thank you for listening. So, sit back or start your run or get walking because this is a great episode. And thank you for sending in so many questions! Keep them coming! Getting Comfortable Being Comfortable

2/8/2024
Episode 36: Getting Comfortable Being Comfortable Yes, you read it correctly. Sure, you probably hear about how important it is to learn how to get comfortable being uncomfortable. But you know what's even more important? Getting comfortable being comfortable. It's not only more important it's also harder! You read that correctly too! It's easier to get people to run too hard than easy enough. It's harder to get people to run easy! And that's because it's just so hard for so many of us to be comfortable simply being comfortable. We think we are not running hard enough. We believe we are not trying hard enough. We doubt that what we are doing is enough if we're comfortable doing it. I made this episode because I want to end that nonsense. So, settle in and enjoy the episode. And special thanks to the great mindset coach tammie bennett of the show up society for gracing us with another mindset minute to close out the episode. Mistakes I've Made So You Don't Have To

2/1/2024
EP 35: Mistakes I've Made So You Don't Have To I don't believe that you need to fall down to know that it hurts. I don't believe that you need to make a mistake to learn from one. I believe that we can learn from each others mistakes and stumbles and falls. That's why I'm sharing a whole bunch of my mistakes in the hope that doing so will keep you from making the same gaffes. Some of these mistakes are seemingly obvious ones. Well, the obvious mistakes are obvious because they happen the most. The vast majority of mess ups that I share are directly related to running . Some are tangentially related. And there's even one that's just a grooming mistake. But there is no need for any of you to make that mistake either. I hope you enjoy the episode and have some fun at my expense. And if this episode helps you have better runs or keeps a goatee off your face... then I've done my job. Cheers, Coach Bennett (0:00) Intro (2:34) You don't need to run on ice. I've done it. (6:50) You don't need to do a beer mile or chocolate milk mile. I did both. (10:30) I've run with a phone in my hand... you shouldn't do that (13:40) Don't run in shoes that don't fit. I've done it. (17:13) You don't need to not have toilet paper when you need it. (19:40) You don't need to run a race you shouldn't run. I did. (23:35) Don't tell yourself you can't race because you're not in great shape. I did that. (25:52) Don't run in a thunderstorm. Idiots do that. I did that. I was an idiot. (27:39) You don't need to hang out in the sun unprotected for hours. I did it. It sucks. (32:21) I've run when I was sick. I've run when I was hurt. You don't need to do that. (34:47) You don't need to have a goatee. Ever. I had one once. It was a disaster. (36:32) Don't eat a pepperoni stromboli the night before an early morning race. (38:45) Thought I could get hydrated during a run. I couldn't. You probably can't either. (40:14) I used to say I hated running. It wasn't true and it hurt my running. Don't do that.
