SBW 186: Frantic Fratton thriller

4/5/2024
After catching their breath, Chris and Anton are joined by a soggy Richard Cutcher, fresh from his trip to the south coast, where Derby gained a valuable point - and avoided defeat - in the crucial top two clash at Portsmouth. We analyse the main talking points (including the fox on the pitch), and ask if Pompey was the game where Corey Blackett-Taylor finally arrived as a Ram. There's yet more praise for Ebou Adams and his incredible mental fortitude to play whilst fasting for Ramadan, another inevitable mention for the fantastic Nathaniel Mendez-Laing, and our latest attempt at wondering how many more points Derby need to secure promotion. With the chance to go seven points clear of third place in League One going begging, Chris, Tom and Phil look back on a sorry afternoon at Sixfield, where Derby slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Northampton Town. Are Warne's methods leading to more muscle strains, or is it just coincidence and bad luck? There's also analysis of our promotion rivals' run-ins, points predictions for Easter, and we definitely answer the top Rams talking point from the past week... do beans belong on a fry-up plate or in a separate pot? SBW 181: Three becomes four

2/26/2024
With none of the top three winning and Derby going down 2-1 at Oakwell, is it now a four horse race for automatic promotion from League One with Barnsley eyeing a late dash? Richard Cutcher, Tom Martin and Anton Martin assess Derby's defeat against the Tykes, their wider form against the top eight and compare the run-ins of our promotion rivals in a bid to make sense of a topsy-turvy race for the Championship. The lads also debate Derby's striker options with Dwight Gayle, Martyn Waghorn and Corey Blackett-Taylor all hopefully fit for roles against Charlton on Tuesday, and whether Paul Warne needs to go back to a 4-3-3. SBW 178: Adams arrives after Robins rocked

2/1/2024
Derby returned to winning ways at the weekend (just), but questions still remain over the Rams' consistency, aggression, and desire as the League One promotion slog continues. Richard and Anton are joined by Match of the Day commentator and avid Rams fan Martin Fisher, who returns to the pod to talk life in the gantry, as well as his thoughts on the Cheltenham win, jeering Conor Hourihane, and booing the team off at half time. There's also discussion on Derby's new arrival, midfield Ebou Adams on loan from Cardiff City. Is he the midfield 'ratter' Warne needs in the middle, or just another underwhelming body in the building...? Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

SBW 176: Bantams bottle job after Cod conquest

1/11/2024
The Rams opt to concentrate on the league in early 2024 after a disappointing 1-0 home exit in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy to Bradford City... but how important was it as a competition anyway? Chris and Tom are joined by Chris Smith to look back on a 'brutal' Pride Park defeat, assess Joe Ward's deficiencies as a right back, and wonder if Derby have the squad depth to go the distance in the League One promotion race. It's January, so there's the inevitable discussion about Max Bird's future, along with welcome reaction to NML's new 2-year contract extension. SBW 174: Admirable Nelson

12/27/2023
The Rams' penultimate game of 2023 sees a seventh win in eight league games, as Wigan are edged out at the DW. Chris is joined by Ollie Wright (@derbycountyblog) to assess the latest impressive result on the road - including a stressful last 20 minutes, before pondering the future or Eiran Cashin and heralding the new contract of superb fullback Ryan Nyambe. Ollie also tells Chris about the inspiration for his latest book, 'Coming Home', based on personal reflections of Derby's recent administration period, and we both wonder whether any team in the existence of football will 'beat' Derby's 11 point Premier League record. SBW Meets: Gary Rowett (Patreon taster)

12/20/2023
In this shortened version of our November Patreon interview, Chris, Richard, and a group of our Patreon listeners sat down on Zoom with former Rams player, coach and manager Gary Rowett to recall his two spells at the Baseball Ground and Pride Park. Rowett is best remembered as the manager in 2017-18 who took Derby to the playoff semi-finals, before defeat over two legs to Fulham. There were, however, many important moments in Rowett's managerial stint - the transformation of Matej Vydra into the Championship's best striker, our most recent victory over Nottingham Forest (!), and ofcourse, his acrimonious departure to Stoke City in the summer of 2018. Rowett also enjoyed a three-year playing spell at Jim Smith's Derby between 1995 and 1998, helping the Rams gain promotion into the Premiership and establishing himself as a consistent top flight full back. He told SBW about the best memories from his playing days, and the words from Joe Royle which served as motivation throughout his career. ** To hear the full, extended 90-minute interview with Rowett, or watch the video podcast, become an SBW Patron for as little as £3, and support the podcast in return. ** Learn more about your ad choices. SBW 172: Valiant effort

11/30/2023
The temperatures are getting chilly... but Warne's Rams are starting to cook! Chris, Anton and Phil look back on back to back wins which extended Derby's winning streak to four in League One, sending Paul Warne's side into the top six for the first time this season. There's welcome praise - and a possible new chant - for first touch goalscoring hero Tyreece John-Jules, along with analysis of Nathaniel Mendez-Laing and his fantastic form... are we becoming too reliant on NML to win games? The SBW panel also look at the state of the division, with Derby sat in the same position but 4 points better off than this time last year. With the general consensus that League One is weaker in 23/24, do Derby have a greater chance of getting promoted? Plus, Phil expains his AirBnB set-up for his upcoming trip to Leyton Orient.
