The 100 greatest number 1 singles: 100-91

7/6/2025
February 2005 was a momentous moment in the chart, when the 1000th number one single was achieved by a very dead Elvis Presley. As promised, we are celebrating this landmark with a 10 part series, in which I count down my absolute favourite number ones from the start of the UK top 40 in 1952 to the start of 2005. That means talking about some of the biggest acts in pop history: Beatles, Stones, Abba, Spice Girls, Madonna, Britney, Kylie, Blur, Elvis and many, many, many more. It also means talking about some of the maddest crap that ever graced the top spot of the top 40. So what to expect from our first 10 entries? Expect animated bands, duos with weird psychosexual feelings for each other, a reality TV show single that's actually good and much much more.
