Storytelling

Hey, y'all hear about that Dirty Pair? That's good! It's good! You should watch it! We think it's good, which is why we're gonna do everyone a favor and make a podcast where we go through every episode of the classic series based on the (questionably) classic light novels by Haruka Takachiho. Maybe we'll do the OVAs and Dirty Pair Flash too, who can say? I sure can't. It's too early to tell! Music by FASSounds from Pixabay. Episode 26: R-Really? For Beautiful Women, "Cannon" is the Keyword to Escape!

4/18/2024
We've done it, you've done it, everyone's done it. We made it to the end of the 1985 (plus two in 1987) classic sci-fi animated series Dirty Pair. We've done it with a special longer-than-usual episode for you since it's the last one we'll be doing for a little while. And what an episode it is! This one's got it all: big guns, cool fights, giant explosions, and above all, some real quality yearning. Ah yes, settle in friends. If a series has to end, this is the way to end it. But of course, this isn't the end, there's a second series that releases as an OVA and there's a couple of hour long specials, as well as a feature film. We'll be tackling those all in some kind of order that we explain at the end of this podcast, but first we're going to take a break. I would like to take a break! So while we take a break, and try to track down some information about the production of The Affair of Nolandia, feel free to just listen through the series again a few times. We won't keep you waiting long! Our next episode will deal with the first of two specials, The Affair of Nolandia, which takes the series in a different direction both tonally and artistically. Aren't you excited? Well, maintain that excitement until June 6th, which is when we're currently planning on releasing that episode. Thank you to everyone for listening, this has been such a fun thing to do. See you next time! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 25: What? The Boy in the Mansion is a Terminator!

4/4/2024
25 episodes into this podcast run and I discover that I can put custom thumbnails for each episode. Well, better late than never, I guess! We careen towards the end of our time with the original run of Dirty Pair (plus two OVA episodes!) with this episode that maybe, y'know, has more subtext than previous episodes. Is it the freedom afforded by being an OVA episode? Is it us reading what we want to read into it? Either way, they have a beautiful friendship. Sure, Gooley, that's what it is. Also there's a Terminator, and a laser table, and a VOTOM. Who can ask for more? Our next episode - indeed, the FINAL EPISODE before we take a little break and figure out our next move - will appear in your podcatchers as if by magic on April 18th. Hosted on Acast. Episode 24: Are You Serious? A Condo is a Dangerous Place to Live!

3/21/2024
We come to you now with a bit of a long one but in fairness, in fairness, they're all long ones from here on out. But here on out isn't that far away, because this is the final episode of the Dirty Pair's 1985 televised run! Sure, sure, there's a couple of OVA episodes that get released in '87, and yeah, there's that Affair of Nolandia special and Dirty Pair: Project Eden, the movie from which this podcast took its own name, but this is the last televised episode! It's Big! It's Important! One might argue I went a little overboard when I edited it, but history will be the judge of me. Also, this is the first episode we recorded since Akira Toriyama passed, so we spend a little time talking about that as well. Anyway, it's a good episode of television, and I'd like to think we earn the longer run-time on this one as well. The next episode, which deals with the first of the two special episodes once included on From the Lovely Angels with Love, will drop on April 4th. You'll love it. I'll love it. Everyone will love it. It'll also be a bit of a long one. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 23: Uncertainty, Our Magnificent Revenge!

3/7/2024
Welcome, everyone, to the second-ever podcast that I had to export at a lower bitrate in order to get the file size low enough to upload to this free tier of podcasting service! Pull up a chair and have a listen to an elegant assassination attempt, a long con, a romantic pursuit, and a dramatic comeuppance! It's no wonder we spent so long talking about it, this (the penultimate episode of Dirty Pair's original televised run) episode is packed with all kinds of cool stuff. Give it a watch, then give this a listen, and then marvel at how much we talked about it. Took me ages to edit this one, goodness gracious. Hosted on Acast. Episode 22: We Did It! 463 People Reappear!

2/22/2024
It had to happen sooner or later. Eventually, there was going to be an episode of Dirty Pair that we just couldn't manage to talk about for an hour. This, the second half of a two-part tale, is that episode. It's nothing wrong with the episode itself, mind you, it's just that things happen so fast in this episode that it's hard to really latch onto anything and digress for an hour. My memory of recording these episodes is kinda hazy on account of being sick the whole time, but I'm pretty sure next episode we'll more than make up for it. Also we talk about the Affair of Nolandia for a little bit. Think of it as a teaser for when we eventually watch that OVA and record a podcast about it. It'll sound a little something... like this (this being the part where we talk about Affair of Nolandia). Next episode drops March 7th, at which point I need to find time to record more episodes. Until then! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 21: No Way! 463 People Disappeared?

2/8/2024
Our podcast project hurtles towards its inevitable conclusion, as we encounter a mysterious ghost ship that ought to have 463 people on it, but doesn't. Incidentally, why 463 people? It's such a specific number. We don't talk about that, but we do talk about proper commercial break timing, the appropriateness of using one's Natural Talents to cheer up a child (don't do it), and the disgusting domesticity of our favorite intergalactic Trouble Consultants. Also, I'm still sick in this recording, so enjoy that The next episode will arrive on schedule and continue to feature my Husky Sick Voice on February 22nd. Until then, you'll just have to draw your own conclusions as to how everyone disappeared off of that spaceship. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 20: Nostalgic Blues Make a Killer Soundtrack

1/25/2024
I don't know how I manage to keep getting these out on time, but here we are yet again for another episode of Project P.O.D! This time, we're talking about Captain Haddock, an assassin who has one last job to do, an ice cream magnate, and the creamiest gal. Kei and Yuri spend this episode either being completely in sync with each other or verbally sparring, so you know it's my absolute favorite kind of episode. Meanwhile, you all get to hear my husky voice for this and the next few episodes because I had an absolute bitch of a cold when we recorded this most recent batch of episodes. Please look forward to it. Speaking of this most recent batch of episodes, the next episode will appear as if by magic (but it's not magic, it's me taking time to get this thing published) in your podcast application of choice on February 8th. Until then, dear listener, until then! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 19: An Unjustified Lover's Grudge. Let Me Love You Without Revenge!

1/11/2024
Another day, another podcast about that one episode of Dirty Pair where a dude seeks revenge because someone broke his sex doll. You know how it is. Look, maybe you could argue that this episode is also about Kei and Yuri doing cool commando shit and fighting a warlord and his army. I'll allow that such an episode, or at least parts of it, exist here. But also there's the whole plot where a rich guy allergic to women built a sex doll and then hires the 3WA to track down the persons responsible when that doll is inadvertently destroyed. You can't deny that all happens in this episode too, even though it seems like these should have been two different episodes. But they aren't. They aren't! And we talked about that. And we talked about the Laserdisc format. And Metal Gear Solid (of course). And a meal. A succulent meal. What day is it? Oh, okay. The Next Episode of the Podcast, which is the first of the Recording Session Where I was Sick, will go up on January 25th. I'm sure you're all looking forward to hearing my husky voice. Episode 18: Pardon Us! Trouble's on the Run, So We're Coming Through!

12/28/2023
The Yuletide cannot stop this podcast, because I worked ahead for a change and uploaded it all ahead of time like a responsible show-runner, running a show that is largely for my own amusement. I also probably spent a little too much time too close to my mic, and so some of the audio is uh, less pristine than I'd like it, but I also only have so much time to spend on this stuff. Episode 18 is all about corrupt police running drugs, which they treat as a big deal in this episode but to which we say "yeah, that's just the LA County Sheriff, whatever, jog on mate." But this episode breaks through our tough cynical exteriors by being extremely comedic, with some of the best back-and-forth dialogue in the series and, we're totally not kidding, an actual good male co-star for the Lovely Angels to bounce off of. Oh, and Gooley is here too, getting involved and doing his best to keep the Lovely Angels from getting shot by cops. That's it for this year, we'll see you all again in 2024. Episode 17: Come out, Come out, Assassin!

12/14/2023
CW: Suicide, sexual assault It isn't their usual fare, but sometimes some heavy things happen in Dirty Pair so we're warning you ahead of time: yes, someone kills himself and yes, there is an extremely uncomfortable scene between Kei and an assailant that reminds us that 1980s culture was in fact full of this kind of misogyny and assault-as-flirting(maybe? Don't know why they depicted it this way if they just wanted to establish that--look, it doesn't matter, it's in there and it's bad and you should know ahead of time that it's there). Which is a shame, because this is otherwise an interesting episode that takes a more serious tone and has a mystery and a manhunt at its core. Also this podcast episode has a very brief discussion of Alan Wake II along with a reminder to ourselves that hey, SuperEGO was a fantastic podcast. We also get into the nitty and/or gritty of commercial space travel, drug addiction, and codebreaking. And melodicas. Melodicae? Those keyboards what you blow into. Next episode features cops, cops, and more cops! They all suck. You can find out the hows and whys of their suckitude when the podcast returns on December 28th, just in time for the New Year. Episode 16: Leave It to Us! The 3WA is a Wonderful Job!

11/30/2023
We've made it, everyone, to episode 16, and only now do we truly begin to understand how far afield we can wander. I mean, it's probably not that far of a walk from Dirty Pair to GI Joe but it's not a quick stroll, that's for sure. We also have trouble with pronunciation, and I left it in the podcast instead of editing it out because it's important to know that words are Difficult Sometimes and that's Okay. Let's see, there's businessmen in this one, and a sniper, and a biker gang, and oh yes Kei and Yuri being Extremely Domestic with one another. They are hired to look after capitalist royalty and somehow this sheltered scion is less annoying than a certain Little Lord Boy whom I will not speak of further here. All in all, a great podcast about a great episode of Dirty Pair that everyone can enjoy! Next episode drops on 12/14, see you then! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 15: Dig Here, Meow Meow! Happiness Comes at the End!

11/16/2023
All right, so here we are once again with a weird little tale about an old man who's searching for treasure in a hidden temple. Was he led there by a legend? Archaeology? Probably the second one, but Kei and Yuri are here to help him survive whatever traps the place might have in store, along with whatever his disgruntled former assistant throws at him (an assault helicopter, as it turns out). We do talk about that, but we also discuss Jason Bourne, the Legends of the Hidden Temple, and the sound that Godzilla makes. You know the one. Y'know, I thought I'd nailed all the dates in the outros this time around, but I flubbed it on this one. I got over it, and you will too, when you return to hear our next episode on November 30th! Episode 14: The Vault or the Vote? A Murderous Day for a Speech

11/2/2023
Something strange was in the air when we recorded this episode that starts with a bang, if a bang is an incredibly racist caricature. Sorry, everyone, the 1980s happened in this episode. But once you... get... past.. that... part.... (ugh, feels awful to type) we get into a thrilling heist and an episode that moves at breakneck speed. You want a scene full of exposition? Go somewhere else, it's all killer and no filler in this episode where a high-stakes infiltration into the heart of the 3WA itself threatens Kei and Yuri's overtime pay. Also, Yuri can't quite mask her true feelings about her partner... again. We continue our mad experiment of putting out a podcast for an audience of ourselves in two weeks with the release of Episode 15, which is all about fingering. Or archaeology. One of those things, probably. See you on November 16th! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 13: What's This? Our Supple Skin is a Mess!

10/19/2023
Oh ho ho, what's this? What's THIS? A spooky episode of Dirty Pair, just in time for the spooky season of Hallowe'en. We couldn't have planned it better, and in fact did not plan it at all. But you, dear listener, are the beneficiary of this lack of planning that turned out for the best anyway. Come closer, and listen to the tale of giant space slugs (mollusks), a Shoggoth, Kei's star turn as Captain Dallas, and Yuri's entire... mood. For this entire episode. Also, they flirt with each other in this episode, which I mean... don't they always? This time it's pretty blatant, though. All right, enjoy this episode and be sure to catch our next episode, which should drop on November 2nd. It'll be a fun time for all, I'm sure. Hosted on Acast. Episode 12: The Little Dictator! Let Sleeping Top Secrets Lie

10/5/2023
A strange energy is in the air during this recording as we get back to the business of talking about Dirty Pair. And what better way for us to knock the rust off of our somewhat atrophied podcasting muscles than to tackle a story of love, loss, and desperation. And a hyper-intelligent Nazi mouse. Really it's mostly about the Nazi mouse. I mean, if you ran into something like that you'd probably talk about it, right? We thought so too, and so we spend some time unpacking the weird security system at the heart of this episode. We finally managed to read a calendar properly, so when you hear that the next episode will arrive on October 19th, you can be confident that it will, in fact, arrive on October 19th. I'm really calling my shot here, I hope nothing bad happens to me. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 11: Ho ho ho, Dresses and Men Should Always be Brand New!

9/21/2023
We near the halfway point of this podcasting venture with a splendid little episode about being overworked, the damage that can do to your relationships, and the importance of vacation. Also, the cops are shit - it wasn't until doing this podcast that I realized how poorly they do their job throughout this series, but it sure has become a recurring theme. Kei and Yuri hate kids, love parties, tolerate their boss-dad Gooley, and at the end of the day, no matter what happens, they have each other. Spirits willing and the creek don't rise, you'll have a new episode of this podcast to listen to on October 5th. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Episode 10: What? We're Heinous Kidnappers!

9/7/2023
Here we are once again for another episode of Dirty Pair, and this time we spend a lot of time being angry about monarchies in general and one specific prince, whom Kei and Yuri have to get back to his homeworld before a dastardly drug-dealing duke puts his divine right to rule to the ultimate test. Do things go smoothly? Of course they don't. Does Yuri get a face-full of Kei's ass? You bet she does! Does one of our podcast hosts - I won't spoil which one - go on a rant and wish misfortune upon a twelve year old child? Well, you'll just have to listen to find out. Thank you as always for listening; next episode releases September 21, and we're all very excited about it. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

8/24/2023
Shucks howdy pardn'r, welcome to this here podcast 'bout that there Dirty Pair. This time we travel to a mysterious planet full of Sergio Leone tropes to watch as the Lovely Angels turn their prodigious skills towards resolving a conflict between warring crime families who threaten to disrupt the production of a powerful energy source! Everything goes totally according to plan, for sure, and nobody makes any catastrophic mistakes and the planet definitely does not blow up at the end. Well, probably, maybe. Episode 8: Gotta Do It! Love is What Makes a Woman Explode

8/10/2023
Oh wow, oh wow do we have an episode this time. It's got everything you could want in it: an audio clip from a different show, the most oblique reference to Sincere Engineer that I could think of at the time, and far more discussion of Metal Gear than I remember having, but I guess that sneaks up on you. You wanna know what makes a woman explode? Don't we all. Does this episode of Dirty Pair answer that question? It depends on whether you think they're roommates or roommates (oh my god they were roommates). Look, all I'm saying is... joint bank account. Also that I said the next episode would come out August 10th, which as we all know is today and also when this episode released. I never said I was good at reading the calendar. Thank you once again for listening to this podcast, which I deeply enjoyed recording and editing together. We will meet again in a fortnight (not in Fortnite), which is otherwise known as August 24th. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
