Today’s yarn comes to you live from our 2024 Red Deer Camp with Kev Schilf, Ian Summers, East Coast Bowhunting and Dylan Oshea. We chat all about the 2024 Rut conditions, share expert red deer knowledge from Kev and Ian and tip plenty of beers down the hatch in the process. It was a true honour to have the opportunity to learn in the field each day from people as experienced as these boys and the openness and respect they treated us with was second to none. We even found time to head out of camp, hit the pub, tip a few jars in and record this drunken late night yarn. Topics discussed include weather conditions and the effect it has on animal behaviour, terrain, calling in animals, when and when not to call, moving through the bush and plenty more. John has spent many years honing his trade as a chef, working in top restaurants around the world and has recently purchased a property on the banks of the Hawkesbury river NSW where he has set up his latest culinary creation, The Bush River Kitchen. The Bush River Kitchen is all about cooking freshly harvested wild game and local produce over flame. John is an avid hunter who loves spending his days out in the field hunting for his protein and foraging the ocean floor for fresh seafood. John shares plenty of tips on caring for wild game from the minute it is harvested, aging advice and cooking tips to ensure we maximise the wild protein we harvest. Ash is a long time Spearo who has spent years diving up and down the coast of North Queensland. Ash shares his knowledge and experience of living in Thursday Island, learning the ways of the land from Indigenous locals and tells a yarn of an incredibly close call he had with a monster saltwater crocodile whilst spearfishing alone north of the Daintree river. We share a few tins (as usual) and have a firkin good laugh at ourselves as we share our F#@k ups and close encounters. Ash is an absolute champion of a guy who loves a yarn and a bloody good time. Join us as we venture 800 kms north of Cairns up into a remote Cape York property Bowhunting for Boars and spending time in the dusty hot landscape that is Cape York Australia in the dry season. This yarn we are joined by fellow bowhunter, long time mate and experienced bushman Darren Meares. Together we share a few tins and discuss our successes, short comings and lessons learned after each days hunting. This was a fantastic trip and we were looked after exceptionally well by the land owners who gave us the opportunity to experience the true Cape York experience. Donnie is at the absolute pinnacle of hunting extreme, remote locations and has completed more than 50 hunting and conservation expiditions to the Arctic Circle and Alaska. Donnies knowledge and experience in not only surviving, but thriving in this type of country is unparalleled. He shares story after story of his incredible experiences including riding an elephant to work to study tigers in Bangladesh, befriending a pack of wolves whilst studying salmon in Alaska, an incredible mountain lion hunt and also his view on the ethics of hunting bears. Donnie is one of the most passionate and genuine people you could ever meet and he truely lives life prioritising incredible experiences above material possessions. 009: Extreme Solo Adventurist | Outback Mike

This yarn is part 1 of a 2 part episode with extreme solo adventurist Mike Atkinson. Some may know him as Outback Mike from Alone Australia season 1, however Mikes story runs far deeper than that. Part 1 we learn of Mikes monumental solo expedition where he hand carved a 5 meter dug out canoe from a huge hoop pine tree (worked full time on it for 14 months) before sailing it solo 1500 kms to the tip of Australia via Cape York living off nothing but the land using 1840’s equipment. Mikes inspiration for the extreme adventure came from early Australian settler James Morrill, who survived a 42-day sea voyage off the Queensland Coast in 1846. This incredible story of dedication, skill and mental resilience against all odds is nothing short of amazing and will inspire others to chase their dreams. Mike also shares his transition from fast jet military pilot to extreme solo adventure film maker and shares some of the survival skills he learned from his time in the military. This is his story.
