Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 - Section 36 & 37 - Interview with a Health and Safety Lawyer!

2/7/2024
Welcome to episode 14! They are flying out now and we've had so much feedback from you lovely listeners as we work our way through the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. This awesome episode features the fabulous Mary Lawrence, a H&S Lawyer/Partner with the firm Osbourne Clarke and we discuss all things prosecution related especially focusing on Section 37 of the HASAWA. She has some excellent advice for businesses in terms of being prepared if you find yourselves in the position of needing legal help but also, how individual prosecutions work as it isn't just the business that is at risk if things go wrong, individuals can also find themselves in court for failings to carry out individual duties that lead to a work place incident. As always, we hope you enjoy listening to this episode and we can assure you, everyone can take something away from this chat! Stay safe, Daisy & Lynsey xx

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - Section 7

1/25/2024
We're back! The past 2 episodes were special episodes which we hope you loved listening to but now you have got your angels in the hot seats again. This episode is moving on to section 7 of the HSAWA'74. As we've had a little gap in recording together... we ended up having a major chat about current topics and past incidents so it took 28 mins to get the section 7 but the chat is pretty informative so we won't apologise :) Lynsey also sends her apologies to anyone in Wales who is shocked at her tiny knowledge of how to say Welsh town names!! Section 7....This is where the employee gets duties!! It shall be the duty of every employee while at work— (a) to take reasonable care for the health and safety of himself and of other persons who may be affected by his acts or omissions at work; and (b) as regards any duty or requirement imposed on his employer or any other person by or under any of the relevant statutory provisions, to co-operate with him so far as is necessary to enable that duty or requirement to be performed or complied with We hope you enjoy hanging out with us on this episode and remember, if you haven't already, follow us on instagram on healthandsafety.angels Love from us Daisy & Lynsey xx

SPECIAL EPISODE - Reworked with Dr. Stephanie Fitzgerald

1/10/2024
SPECIAL Episode!! Were bringing you another special episode, this time with Lynsey and a fabulous special guest. Dr.Stephanie Fitzgerald is a clinical psychologist and a neuropsychologist by specialism (a medical doctor who diagnoses and evaluates how the brain affects behavior) She is also the author of 'Reworked' - putting health and happiness at the centre of your career. Her focus is on looking at how to be happy, health, safe and engaged at work. Her book is AMAZING and as I sat down to read, I found myself feeling like she had written the book for me! Her style of writing is literally bang on point with our idea behind this podcast - straight forward, no jargon and easy to understand. We had a great discussion about her book and some of the topics she covers but this one hour podcast just touches on a couple of key points so I highly recommend a read (or a listen as it's also available as an audiobook) SO.... sit back, get comfy and enjoy a listen. SPECIAL EPISODE - Piper Alpha: Story of a survivor - Joe Meanen

12/27/2023
The first special episode from us is an AMAZING story from survivor Joe Meanen, who worked on the Piper Alpha platform. The Piper Alpha oil rig was situated off Aberdeen, Scotland and was home to more than 200 men at a time. On a calm summer night in 1988, a gas leak caused a huge explosion that saw a fireball rip through the platform, killing 167 men. Joe Meanen was one of only 61 men to survive the disaster and he chats with Daisy to discuss his experience. We are honored that Joe chose to discuss his experience on this podcast, and ultimately to share with you & hopefully help to embed the importance of managing health & safety and how we can make a difference going forward. This bumper episode is a two hour special!! Stay safe Daisy & Lynsey x

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - Section 3

12/13/2023
Welcome to episode 10. Exciting time... we're moving to a new section.. This is section 3, which is about duties of employers and self employed to people that aren't employees. We tend to focus on people within the business but we have a legal duty to ANYONE that can be affected by our business activities.. and rightly so. No one should be out and about, living their life and be injured or affected by a business carrying out their work. Sit back, grab a cuppa and enjoy this interesting, hour long episode. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - Section 2.3

11/29/2023
Welcome to episode 9. We're continuing with section 2 and we're on to subsection 3. Whilst every section is important, this is a must know section due to the absolute duty involved here. We're discussing a Health & Safety Policy and your legal duty to produce one but it's not hard and there is a lot of support available. I always find that we get asked to read the H&S policy on induction but (apart from people involved with the H&S department) who really knows what it is, what it's for and the actual point of it!! So we're here, doing our thing, breaking it down for you and having a good old chat along the way. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - Section 2.2

11/15/2023
Welcome to episode 8!! My goodness we've got a bumper episode for you with section 2.2 of the HSAW'74! We continue the jargon busting with subsection 2 which puts additional specific duties on an employer to their employees. To see the legislation in full, visit legislation.gov.uk or search The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 on the HSE website. A quick reminder that as these episodes explain certain meanings, it is super beneficial to listen in order as we will refer to some terms that have been explained in previous episodes. We have got just over 50 minutes of fabulousness with this episode so clear your diary, maybe get some steps in and have a wander in the fresh air while you listen - although it's probably far more fun indoors if it's raining..... As always, get in touch if there is anything you want to share with us or if you have any suggestions for what you want us to break down for you. Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - Section 2.1

11/1/2023
It's time to get down to business!! This week we start our journey in to THE big boss of Health and Safety law. As we have mentioned, the law is broken down in to Acts and Regulations and we're breaking it down further by discussing section by section so that we can really understand what things mean. Section 2.1 of the HSAW'74 is duties that employers have to employees (1) It shall be the duty of every employer to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees. We're pretty much looking at each word and, in our own special way, explaining what the requirement is. So, as always.... find your perfect listening moment and enjoy the journey with us, Daisy and Lynsey on our H&S adventure.

We know that it is all pretty overwhelming! You have to comply with the law but you don't know what to do to comply, well there is help AND it's free!! This week we look at the HSE - The Health & Safety Executive. You have to comply so you might as well enjoy finding out how to get help with it all. So sit back, get comfy (of course, grab that cup of hot/cold liquid) and ENJOY Daisy & Lynsey xx

Health & Safety - How does the law work?? (the absolute basics)

10/4/2023
So nice to see you back! Now we know why we bother with managing health and safety, it's time to see how it all works in terms of the law. What does the legal system look like? (you're in for a treat this week!) We'll introduce you to the H&S Jellyfish as a way of breaking down the system that is in place to ensure we have a benchmark to work to but of course, we don't want to sit at the benchmark, we want to go above and beyond - for moral reasons. As always, sit back, get comfy and enjoy this journey with us. Lynsey & Daisy

Health & Safety - Financial is so big we had to part 2 it!!

9/20/2023
A beautiful follow on to episode 3... here is 3.1 (but for tech reasons is actually episode 4 - we're still learning!) We're adding to the financial reasons in this episode, focus is on those hidden costs, the wider impact to the business. It is easy to spreadsheet a costing of physical items such as stock but when it comes to the impact of an incident, there is SO much that you just don't see and the implications can cost a business far more than you realise. We kept it short and sweet this episode so no need to get out the thermos this week. Enjoy and remember to get in touch if you have any suggestions for episodes or you just want a H&S chinwag.

Health & Safety - Legal & Financial reasons

9/6/2023
We're back with a much longer discussion on legal reasons and financial reasons to implement good health and safety management. Now, we didn't mean to but it's such a big topic!! so you get a full 50 minutes of joy this episode so you might need a rather large mug of tea this time. We're going to assume you started a business to make money or you're employed in a company whose goal is to be profitable so it's a pretty important one this week! So get comfy, grab that cuppa and get listening.
