'THE FILMS & VIDEOS OF DEVO' w/ Jerry Casale of DEVO

5/9/2024
This week, the one that started it all for me, Devo’s Jerry Casale, joins me on the podcast to talk about Devo’s film and video legacy. We discuss the origin story of their first short film, the films that influenced Casale and Devo’s aesthetic, their early jobs and the pressures of Ohio, how ‘Bonnie & Clyde’ influenced the 'Beautiful World’ video, meeting collaborator Chuck Statler, where Rod Rooter’s dialogue came from, Club Devo and the difficulties making their merchandise, Jerry tells the plot of the Devo feature-length film script that never got made (including one that was going into production with Francis Ford Coppola & one with William Friedkin), how they directed their conservative looking extras and General Boy, meeting their idols, how they constructed their live shows, phone calls from the video Commissioner of MTV, censorship, working with Soundgarden, Bruce Connor’s ‘Mongoloid’ short film, transgressive art, people being scared of Devo, Kent State & the Vietnam War as the antecedents of Devolution, crawling out of the basement, the communal mindset of the members of Devo, the antagonistic nature against Devo from interviewers, having fun with the audience while rubbing their nose in it, the groundbreaking & primitive ‘Oh No It’s Devo’ tour, making ‘The Men Who Make The Music’ and having your own action figure made of you. So...peek-a-boo...let's all get devolved together on this week's Revolutions Per Movie!!! 'WATCH ME JUMPSTART' w/ Paddy Considine

5/2/2024
This week, we talked to the actor (House Of The Dragons, 24 Hour Party People, The World’s End), musician (Riding The Low), writer/director (Tyrannosaur, Journeyman) Paddy Considine, about his all-time favorite band (in any universe), Guided By Voices and the documentary Watch Me Jumpstart. We discuss these mythical legends of Dayton, what it was like for Chris being in the band and working with Pollard, Pollard’s incredible work ethic and output, Paddy’s trip from the UK to visit Ohio for the first time and taking a GBV/Bob Pollard tour of Dayton, the eureka moment of understanding the band, wrapping your mind around Bob's lyrics, the early confusion of why, how and who was recording this music, being under-appreciated by the establishment, GBV's influence on Paddy's acting writing & music, Pollard's legendary mix-tapes, turning people onto the band, the obsession of collecting Pollard's entire discography, beer, basements and talking to Bono about Guided By Voices. So, disarm the settlers, and let’s go deep into the world of Guided By Voices on this episode of Revolutions Per Movie. This week, we talk to Stuart Swezey & Bruce Licher, who produced and worked on the Desolation Center series of shows that took bands like minutemen, Swans, Redd Kross, Meat Puppets, Sonic Youth, and Einsturzende Neubauten and put them in locations such as the Mojave Desert as a reaction to the omnipresent police violence against punk rock kids. We talked about the Desolation Center documentary that Swezey directed, the iconic visuals that Licher created for the events, having the legendary artist Chris Burden as your teacher, the healing power of Throbbing Gristle, how to source school buses to take punk rockers to the desert, fake ids, Savage Republic, Glenn Branca and the No New York LP, Redd Kross getting lost in the desert, violence coming from rednecks, the notion of selling out and not repeating oneself, the impact of D. 'THE PYHNX' w/ Andy Zax

3/14/2024
This week, we discuss a music film that my guest, Andy Zax (a Grammy-nominated archivist and the Music Geek on Comedy Central’s ‘Beat The Geeks’), begs us NOT to watch--the 1970 psychedelic romp ‘THE PHYNX.’ We take a deep dive into the film’s history, mystique, and weirdo cast (James Brown, Colonel Sanders, Dick Clark, Richard Pryor), as well as a fascinating look at Zax’s time at Warner Brothers Records & on ‘Beat The Geeks’. We also discuss liner notes legend & the screenwriter of The Phynx Stan Cornyn, the fascinating pain that this movie brings to any viewer, Lieber and Stoller’s soundtrack, Phil Spector parodies, the star power ranking of UltraViolet, a 400 Vox Guitar army, album artwork, Van Dyke Parks, Joni Mitchell, bootleg VHS tapes, fake band album artwork, sense memories from music, promotional items from movies, writing about psychedelia without knowing psychedelics, the difference between the original script and the finished movie (which included scenes with Allen Ginsberg & Timothy Leary), and Chris tries to beat ‘The Geek’! So PLEASE DO NOT WATCH THIS FILM EVER (or do you?) on this week’s episode of Revolutions Per Movie. This week, we talk to the two hosts of the fictional classic rock station comedy podcast, Jason Gore & Geoff Garlock of 108.9 The Hawk, about their music film pick, The Who's 'The Kids Are Alright.' We argue over what is the greatest Who period of all time, how the band's inner tensions helped make them even greater, how a first-time director/superfan pulled off this film, Townshend's use of alienation & enlightenment through his interviews, Zeppelin vs. Who, being stuck at midnight movie screenings, Jason's radio broadcasting past on an actual classic rock station in the South, and trying to win over Geoff who had never seen this movie until now! BONUS REVOLUTIONS PER MOVIE EPISODE

2/12/2024
Hello everyone…we recorded a special episode of Coffee With Krummenacher about Victor’s times and friendship with Mojo Nixon. We discuss what it was like being on the road when Mojo was opening for Victor's band Camper Van Beethoven, making split flexi-discs and doing inspired photo shoots together, Mojo and Camper playing The Filmmore together, taking mushrooms and long nights with the man, piss-filled cereal bowls, Mojo’s sweet shamanistic outlook on life, living an authentic life, Mojo’s Camper Van Beethoven cover version, and how Mojo was going to be on the Revolutions Per Movie podcast in a few weeks to talk about a Replacements documentary that he saw in his head that didn’t exist (yet) and the excited email he sent me about his ideas. It’s a wild and beautiful tribute to a singular, weirdo force that is no longer with us. Normally, ‘Coffee With Krummenacher’ is just one of the exclusive bonus shows we have over at the Revolutions Per Movie Patreon (a podcast where my guests talk about their favorite music documentaries or music narrative films), but I thought we should make this episode available to everyone. If you’ve enjoyed what you’ve heard, please consider supporting what we do over at patreon.com/revolutionspermovie. Thank you. NIRVANA: LIVE! TONIGHT! SOLD OUT!! w/ Gary Jarman (The Cribs)

1/25/2024
This week, we talk to Gary Jarman of the UK band The Cribs, who chose a film so close to his (and his brother’s) heart, NIRVANA LIVE! TONIGHT! SOLD OUT! We discussed the massive influence this VHS tape had on the Jarman family and their future in rock, from their decision not to play encores to their affinity for putting noise into their melodies. We also discuss what it was like to come from such a small town where they had never seen anything on a punk level before, the concept of selling out, writing music or lyrics first, saving up stationary store coupons to buy Nirvana cassettes, Britpop, opening for Nirvana the day their album went gold, sabotaging your own live show, dealing with tabloids and the British music press, fantasizing about destroying the Top Of The Pops studio, not playing encores & the endless search for “the next Nirvana.” So come dive into the drum set on this episode of Revolutions Per Movie!
