Langston Collin Wilkins, "Welcome 2 Houston"

8/27/2023
With the celebration of the 50th anniversary of hip-hop continuing, the CW39 Spotlight is on Houston’s hip-hop culture that is so unique to the city. What started as a dissertation for his doctoral degree at Indiana University, Langston Collin Wilkins returned to the city where he grew up to illuminate the complex relationship between place, identity, and music in Houston’s hip-hop culture. What came out of it is a book called Welcome 2 Houston: Hip Hop Heritage in Hustle Town. Wilkins conducted interviews with local rap artists, producers, and managers to find out how artists, audiences, music, and place interact to create a heritage that musicians negotiate in a variety of ways.“I went back into Houston 10 years ago to do a deep study into Houston’s hip-hop scene,” Wilkins said. “Out of that, I have turned that dissertation into a book, so not only there’s an academic part, but I’m a big Houston hip-hop fan, and it’s a love for Houston and hip-hop in this book.” Street-based musicians, avant-garde underground rappers, and Christian artists offer candid views of the scene while Wilkins delves into related aspects like slab, the area’s hip hop-related car culture. What emerges is a portrait of a dynamic reciprocal process where an artist, having identified with and embodied a social space, reproduces that space in a performance even as the performance reconstructs the social space. A vivid journey through a southern hip hop bastion, Welcome 2 Houston offers readers an inside look at a unique musical culture.

Reginald Gibbons, "Sweetbitter"

8/2/2023
Houston-native author Reginald Gibbons, a national book award finalist whose Texas-set novel SWEETBITTER is forthcoming August 1. SWEETBITTER takes place in east Texas in 1910 during the time of white rule-not by law but by lynch mob. Amid the suffocating racism and fear, half-Choctaw, half-white Reuben Sweetbitter and Martha Clarke, a white woman, fall in love. This is an authentic, richly detailed novel with themes of sacrifice, fear, and the loss of one's identity, inspired by Gibbons' family -- whose paternal grandfather was half-Choktaw -- and his experiences growing up in protestant evangelical Texas. Brad Gilmore:How did Houston and Texas in particular shape you as an author? Reginald Gibbons:Well, it did a lot of shaping, I think because my father was a, was a salesman from his car. He sold small items to small, independent grocery stores. These don't even exist anymore. The chains killed all that, but I used to get to ride with him at work when I was a kid, for example. And we'd go out around outside the city limits. We'd go to a little, a little grocery store owned by a Chinese proprietor one owned by a Japanese proprietor, one owned by a black proprietor. And I would see all these different kinds of interactions and I, I learned a lot about how people live. SOURCE: https://bookshop.org/p/books/sweetbitter-reginald-gibbons/19865347

Jackie Martling, "Joke Man"

7/18/2023
Jackie "The Joke Man" Martling may be America's last great joke teller. His savant-like ability to remember every joke he's heard since he was eight years old, coupled with his lightning-fast wit and infectious laugh, has established him as a comedy icon. Famous for being the head writer of the Howard Stern show for 18 years, even more infamous for leaving that position, Jackie's story is fascinating, funny, and heartwarming. And in an age of political correctness, he still helps us belly-laugh at ourselves, and the world around us, with a kindness and sincerity that defuses his unfiltered punch lines. In the feature documentary JOKE MAN we follow Jackie’s improbable journey - from fledgling days of comedy on Long Island, through his time as one of the “Beatles of Radio,” to his success as an author and actor. We hear from friends and fellow entertainers including Willie Nelson, Penn Jillette, Billy West, Artie Lang, Marc Cuban, Sean Young and former Stern show staffers who give us their take on what makes Jackie truly unique. JOKE MAN is a universal story of self-discovery, grit and how humor is the biggest key to authentic happiness. JOKE MAN is produced and directed by Ian Karr. Karr is the founder of the creative and content-driven production agency, IKA Collective. IKA’s credits encompass television series, promos, commercials and original digital content. Notable clients include AMC Networks, WB/Discovery, Showtime, FOX, Hallmark Channel, United Airlines and NBC/Universal. Karr and IKA Collective have played integral roles in the successful launches and promotion of hit television series including Better Call Saul, Empire, Gotham, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Weeds, Dexter and Californication. The company received a Clio for its work on FX’s American Horror Story: Cult. In addition to filmmaking, Karr spent 8 years at Sirius XM as co-host of Jackie’s Joke Hunt, which aired on the Howard Stern Channels. JOKE MAN is produced and edited by Ronni Thomas. Thomas began his career with horror icons Troma, and in 2003 produced Hey Is Dee Dee Home alongside maverick filmmaker Lech Kowlaski. In 2020 he directed The Broken and the Bad, commissioned by AMC and the producers of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. His 2017 short film Walter Potter: The Man Who Married Kittens was nominated for best short doc at the Raindance Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival. His feature debut, The Kybalion, premiered in 2021 and won best documentary and best director at Italy’s Life Beyond Life Film Festival.

Ashley Imani, the former Houston, TX resident now turns social media superstar thanks to her viral videos that even got the attention of Usher is Back with a brand-new single called “Sipp’n” and we put Ashley Imani in the spotlight.Brad Gilmore:Why this record? “Sipp'n", why was this the record to put out and let people know, like kind of what is sipping, like what's the song about if you had to encapsulate it in a definition?Ashley Imani:Honestly, I'm just talking my trash on. I love the song, you know, by Three Six Mafia. So I was like, when I heard the beat, I heard that melody and then we kind of built from there. but I chose, I didn't even really choose this song alone. It was a collective decision. I actually had like listening sessions and everything and kind of had, I had people like kind of vote for their favorite song. And I have so many great songs that it was kind of like tug of war. Like some people like a different song, some people like this song, but I felt like this one is strong. It was strong to like come back out, like, boom, I'm here. This is what I do. And then I can start taking them down that journey and that road, and now they can start seeing like how versatile I am and what different type of music I make. But I felt like this song is relevant to the time right now. And I feel like it just jammed, like, you know.Brad Gilmore:We want to thank Ashley Imani for joining us on this edition of the CW39 Spotlight. She's actually going to be back next week to talk about more of her incredible career. But until next time, I'm Brad Gilmore, CW 39 Houston.
