It’s crazy how material works in some places and not others - just ask stand-up comic Ralph Anthony. In his interview with Art of Bombing’s host Dan Bublitz Jr, he recalls his most influential quote from George Carlin: “If it works on Thursday and it works on Friday but not on Saturday: it’s the crowd.” What that means to Anthony is: that you can’t be too hard on yourself. Jennifer Sutherland is a Denver-area comic who does both sketch and stand-up comedy. She tells Dan Bublitz Jr that when things go wrong on stage you have to take ownership - in other words, in order for a comic to improve, he or she can’t simply blame the audience. Jennifer reminds us that it’s tough to talk about personal stuff with some audiences - she and Dan explore how to deal with dark material without making the crowd so sympathetic that they feel sorry for you. If you feel the crowd isn’t into it, Jennifer says you have to avoid self-sabotage - do your best - because you can’t read their minds - they may be really into it. Radio DJ Geoff Gundy learned about singer Peter Cetera’s departure from the band Chicago the hard way - while interviewing the band Chicago on the radio. Twenty years after Peter Cetera left the band. Lucky for Gundy, there aren’t many comedy bombs that will hit that hard. Formally taking up comedy in 2020, he tells stand-up comedian Dan Bublitz Jr how he’s been fine-tuning his craft: learning when to use sensitive material, how to work open mics, how to shorten your learning curve by taking classes, and more. Geoff Gundy I was such a class clown that I'm lucky one of my grade school teachers didn't kill me. My classmates, however, became like family and many still are. When they weren't pulling their hair out, my teachers often complimented my "quick wit," long before I even knew what that meant.
