Can I Pod With Madness - Kerrang, Metal Hammer and rock in the 1980s

Music Podcasts

Can I Pod With Madness is a podcast in which we meticulously review a copy of Kerrang! or Metal Hammer, from 1987-1989 (mostly). Expect lots of talk about Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, Def Leppard, KISS, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith and Lisa Dominique. Also some waffle about what was on telly that week, what was in the charts and general aimless nostalgia. Bringing the metal back to where it belongs! PWM31: Garfield is an Obligate Carnivore - Kerrang Kontaktz 1988 (part 1)

4/16/2024
This week we’re looking at Kerrang Kontaktz, the Magazine Written By Rock Fans - or alternatively, a lazy money for old rope exercise in which some long rambling letters get published in full. Some “Kontroversial Komments” on the matters of are Whitesnake big fat sellouts, is Robert Plant trying to distance himself from his Led Zeppelin past, and are Glam Rock Pretty Boys giving rock a bad name? Also there’s a shit ton of Pen Palz, which is always good for some inexplicable and baffling comments that possibly didn’t even make sense at the time let alone 36 years later. We also report back on everything we’ve been up to during our hiatus (mostly listing Aerosmith faves and being in the presence of metal royalty Judas Priest, Saxon and Uriah Heep) Also includes a plea for sponsorship with Iron Maiden and Monty Bojangles Recorded 6th April 2024 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/can-i-pod-with-madness/id1667966016 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/69OGJDFZRFu5mjHja3rEOn Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa9908fc-34dd-4638-b446-eef44988dfd3 Check out pics from the issue on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podwithmadness/ YouTube playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6jGszBq8BFFMSscrdXoDDQIEx_-vN-1q&si=nrVOaz9D6yzk4YNw Tip us on ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/podwithmadness CAN I POD WITH MADNESS THEME by Oliver Gardiner https://www.instagram.com/revilorenidrag/ @revilorenidrag Buy Iron Maiden socks https://amzn.to/3U5VkuO And keks https://amzn.to/3TPzWJ1 #Podcast #Metal #HeavyMetal #Kerrang #80s #MetalHammer #ClassicRock #JudasPriest #UriahHeep #Saxon #RocknRollerCoaster #Garfield #Poison #GlamRock

PWM30: Kerrang 257 (Sept 23 1989) - If we ever get to the bottom of it

2/26/2024
This week we’re taking a look at Lenny Kravitz, and asking is he too sexy to be into Star Wars? Talking of NSFW content, we remember a classic Steve Guttenburg video, and assess the career of Judge Reinhold. Kerrang’s cover star is Marillion new boy Steve Hogarth, in a leaf related photoshoot. We ask is their latest single ideal to be used in an 80s douchebag comedy movie, and whether they should have worked with The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. Alice Cooper’s on tour and America is cracking down on rudeness. Danish rockers Disneyland After Dark lead us to speculate about what that would actually be like, because we are apparently Disney adults. Also if the mysterious Club 33 want to give a couple of influential podcasters a membership, we’ll totally be up for that and be absolute shills and/or keep it quiet, just give us a shout. Charity football matches, charity singles and charity gigs are all going on, and we struggle to remember The Poll Tax, the hole in the ozone layer and other things that made the 80s terrible. The Monster Mash is BACK, as is me complaining about the lyrics. We ask whether musicians in the 80s worked out and give a shout out to the little known Austrian bodybuilder Arnold Schwarzenegger. All this and Font Talk is back! Recorded 10th Feb 2024

PWM29: Kerrang 225 (Feb 11 1989) - How do you feel about panthers?

Vixen are our cover stars in this issue, so the casual sexism starts early! WASP are celebrating their lead guitarist (who - spoiler alert, bails out of the band in 6 months time) and cranking out a Jethro Tull cover. There’s reports of secret Aerosmith gigs, so we may rebrand as a mystery podcast. We’ve got features on Quireboys (mostly drunk) and Gary Moore (mostly angry about Kingdom Come). Motley Crue are up to their usual antics and we look at some great listings for Shrapnel, Penpalz and Klassifieds. News about Scott Ian gives us an excuse to use our Anthrax artwork! Residual anger over people talking at KISS concerts! Talking of KISS, Paul Stanley is (affectionately) mocked. Plus ASMR! 1/29/2024
In a change from the intended episode we don't even get to Kerrang in this one, but we do talk about Steve Wozniak, reminisce about Feeder's Just a Day, discover Feeder's Just a Day 2, remember the first lockdown and spin off into a conversation about Eurovision and our favourite entry ever from 2006, Lithuania's LT United with We Are The Winners. Also DEEP KUTZ brings us 1987 by Diamante, and we ask whether she's inspired by Stranger Things and/or Dazzler. Also the return of the moon controversy. Maybe think of this as a bonus episode? 1/16/2024
Kicking off a new year and a new podcast with yet more Gen Patter, as we question whether Gen Z are into Zorro, and wonder whether it’s too late in the game to change the name of the podcast. Simply Red are reappraised, despite not appearing in this week’s issue of Kerrang! However - we do get Atomkraft, WASP, The Accused, Dogs D’amour, Paul Sabu, and Zodiac Mindwarp. Kommunikation features opposing views about Faith No More (still in their Chuck Mosely era) which somehow sends us off down a rabbit hole where we discuss Paris Jackson and Incubus. We ask is “Martha Splatterhead” a feminist trailblazer, and wonder about the state of digital watch technology in the early 80s. We lament questionable marketing for Aerosmith’s Honkin’ on Bobo and present our pitch for the Sabbat biopic. There’s big features on Motorhead (apparently Lemmy is proper into The Titanic) and Heart (which means I can bang on about Dream of The Archer again). We finish off with a new KWIZZ, which goes a lot better than the last time we tried a KWIZZ. Also: Coronation Street! PWM 26 Bonus Episode: The Lost Picture Show

1/2/2024
Like a Christmas Gift For You, but less problematic (thanks Phil!) here’s a very special BONUS podcast that we recorded way back in April. We basically spend this bonus episode promoting Reels Ov Steel, the Heavy Metal Movies podcast, who probably have way more listeners than we do, but what you gonna do? This led us to discuss what constitutes a good example of a metal movie. Can you make a case for something being metal just because you like it? We investigate. We suggest a few movies that our pals at Reels Ov Steel have since covered, but that just means great minds think alike, right? Also you get our hot takes about cinematic masterpieces like Singles and Iron Man 2. Spoiler: Garden State is not a metal movie. In addition we look at a few upcoming rock biopics and give our verdict on the value of movies that haven’t been released yet. PWM25: Xmas Blowout - Get drunk enough and it’ll be fine

12/12/2023
Welcome to our Christmas Pod (for the third time). We thought we were done but then there was some IMPORTANT BREAKING KISS NEWS to cover (sorry... “kover”). Along the way we talk ABBA (obviously), The Millennium Dome, Spice Girls and horror movies that make you cry (or possibly just me). Damn you Guillermo Del Toro! We attempt to delve into Kerrang’s Kerristmas Kwizz, but due to bad planning it doesn’t really work. At least it gives us an excuse to post a picture of Lisa Dominique looking sexual, as always. Talking of sexual, how do you like our new album art? Pretty sweet, right? There’s some Christmas DEEP KUTZ that aren’t very deep, grudging praise for the skills of the doctor from The Human Centipede, lots of Krampus talk and then the podcast cuts off before the end because our microphone batteries ran out. Ordinarily that should mean it all goes in the vault, but we thought what the hell put the pod out anyway, because nothing says end of term vibes like this absolute shambles. There’s some good clips though. PWM24: Kerrang 219 (December 24-31 1988) - Following Gary Moore into Battle

12/11/2023
Welcome to our Christmas Pod (for the second time). It's 1988 and behind the glorious Simon Bisley cover we're looking at a whole bunch of Festive Feechas, once we're done gatekeeping the work of Aerosmith and Led Zeppelin. Uriah Heep are playing a Christmas festival, there's some surprising news about Marillion and we explore the connection between mystical unicorns and Gary Moore. Most of the Korrespondents in this issue are writing in to defend(er) Manowar, while we find ourselves inexplicably preoccupied by an advert for FIST. Did you ever FIST? Let us know! We get some great quotes- sorry, Kwotes and pics of the year, and recap some of the news stories we've covered in the course of the podcast. In addition we highlight some of our Christmas faves, not to mention some of the great electronic acts of the early 90s like The Shamen, the KLF and Jive Bunny. (During the recording of this episode, one of the cats jumped up on the keyboard, somehow switched it on and started playing the piano in a sort of free jazz, Keith Tippett style. Unfortunately our microphones completely failed to pick up the audio, but if you wonder why we start asking her if she wants to play any more, that's the reason) Recorded 29th November 2023 Check out pics from the issue on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podwithmadness/ YouTube playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6jGszBq8BFGY6l8IEsPBIp27FkyQfnck&si=r5ArJdQVNx3c-KU9 Tip us on ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/podwithmadness CAN I POD WITH MADNESS THEME by Oliver Gardiner @revilorenidrag #Podcast #Metal #HeavyMetal #Kerrang #80s #MetalHammer #ClassicRock #motleycrue #Marillion #killerdwarfs #klf #shamen #jivebunny #garymoore #manowar #Aerosmith #led zeppelin #Christmas

PWM23: Kerrang 57 (December 15-28 1983) - Captain Santa With a Bomb

11/28/2023
It's Christmas time, so naturally we spend about an hour talking about going to For The Love of Horror, the UK's premier horror convention. If you want to hear us going on and on about The Lost Boys you're in the right place! Otherwise it's business as usual as we delve into a festive edition of Kerrang from 1983. The stars of Metal are asked what they want for Christmas and most of their answers are variations on the same theme. Shout at the Devil era Mötley Crüe are on the cover and give us some extremely on brand quotes, and reveal their inconsistent scoring system. ZZ Top are compared to Status Quo but don't rise to it. We sing the praises of some of Ozzy Osbourne’s lesser known hits (but not the version of Changes he did with Kelly). Brian May of Queen is ready to launch his Star Fleet project and we ponder whether Hot Space was all that bad. We get confused as to when Dragon Attack came out, but the movie had them recording We Will Rock You in the 80s, so get off our dick. Hawkwind's Sonic Attack is recalled, as is Hard Rock Zombies and we consider whether it's even possible to dislike Genesis. PWM22: Metal Hammer v2 no14 (Nov 26 1987) - Modern Day Emu

11/14/2023
We're back under the Metal Hammer this week as we take a look at a pre Seventh Son of a Seventh Son Iron Maiden. They're in a reflective mood (doing promo for their video 12 Wasted Years) but that leads us to talk Tiswas, Going Live, Live and Kicking and CD:UK. Along the way we get sidetracked by Stephen King, Mr Blobby, You and Me (Duncan the Dragon vs Cosmo and Dibs), Casper’s Brainy Book and various other nostalgic reminiscences. We discuss the pros and cons of Live albums and once again Chris De Burgh raises his head. Well it is still Halloween, technically. Elsewhere we've got Loudness (a Japanese band interviewed by a German journalist, in English, which somehow goes without a hitch), Marillion (in a less than stellar live review, which nevertheless points the way forward for Bruce Dickinson's solo career), The Great Kat (exhorting us to worship her or die) and Paul Di'Anno (talking Frank Sinatra and sexy robots). PWM21: Kerrang 159 (October 24 1987) - Bin Bag Witches

10/30/2023
In this spooky Halloween Special, we discuss going to The Happiest Place On Earth, ruminate on the difference between Millennials and Generation X and face up to the fact that we're now fully fledged Disney Adults. We ask what makes a great Halloween playlist and whether it should include Monster Mash or not (also we keep alluding to an amazing Monster Mash fact that we never get around to, sorry). We're looking at Kerrang in October '87 and along the way we're hearing from AC/DC, Aerosmith, Savatage, Kreator, Doro, Lizzy Borden, and the Lizzy Borden of his day, Alice Cooper. There's also some rock news, TSB Rock School Competition (again) Klassifieds and an angry letter about Mötley Crüe. DEEP KUTZ this week features - shocker - a new song. It’s the band @Dethonator (who by their own description “Sounds like Rob Halford flying a Spitfire made of Maiden shirts to a Metallica show”), with their track Donnington, which you should all go out and buy now because it’s amazing! And the feature you’ve all been waiting for we tackle The Filthy Fifteen! PWM20: Q30 (March 1989) - Cosplaying as the 90s

10/17/2023
This is Can I Pod With Madness so why the hell are we talking about Elvis Costello, The Fine Young Cannibals and Freiheit? Well we've put away childish things (temporarily) and decided to get all sophisticated by looking at an issue of Q Magazine, the *modern* guide to music and more. The original idea was to mix things up a bit and not talk about the same bands all the time, but we do happen to have landed on an issue with a pretty hefty feature on Guns n' Roses, so we're not exactly reinventing the wheel here. Along the way we'll be talking about rock movies, singing actors, Tom Cruise's bad poetry, and the thing that Cliff Richard doesn't wear. Also we've got the first of our DEEP KUTZ (and a rumination on the jam band boom of the early 90s), and, in the run up to Halloween, maybe a spooky story or two Recorded 27th September 2023 Check out pics from the issue on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podwithmadness/ YouTube playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6jGszBq8BFHFm7uddhMJ47gpLGTzYJPK&si=0Phb0AmP3Fnu4mQY Tip us on ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/podwithmadness CAN I POD WITH MADNESS THEME by Oliver Gardiner https://www.instagram.com/revilorenidrag/

PWM19: Kerrang 82 (Nov-Dec 1984) - Residual Cringe

10/3/2023
In another format breaking episode, we're jumping in the Delorean and rolling up into 1984. It's a completely different rock scene, with Heavy Pettin, Raven and Charon, although there's still a Deep Purple feature so we’re not exactly in uncharted territory. Also lots of Meat Loaf! In a first (and probably last) we've got Prince on the cover, and a whopping great feature on him, which gives us a chance to gush over our favourite pint sized musical genius. Also in the mag, acts like U2, The Alarm, Neil from The Young Ones and Phil Collins, proving that Kerrang was, at one point at least, a lot more diverse than we might have thought. I’m not sure The Moody Blues sit well here though. In addition we’ve got the rock news, where we review seeing Busted live, and reveal which of the Can I Pod With Madness team was obsessed with Hanson in their teenage years. We also touch on The Children of Green Knowe, Shakin Stevens, Seven, sci-fi prog metal, American Psycho, swimming pool etiquette, Limahl, Police Academy, the conga, and Chris De Burgh: The Alan Partridge Years. PWM18: Kerrang 240 (May 27 1989) - part 2: Better than Deeply Dippy

9/19/2023
We’re back with the rear end of Kerrang 240. We’ve got Ladykillers! No longer a pervy request for readers to send in saucy pics, it’s now a salute to WOMEN IN ROCK. We look at a few WOMEN IN ROCK (and possibly invent some, “borrowing” a game from The Word Podcast). We talk about Grace Slick (and Jefferson Airplane/Jefferson Starship/Starship), and, in number 38 in our continuing series of people we didn’t expect to see in a metal magazine, Tori Amos. Elsewhere we have Onslaught (cue some dubious editorial shenanigans from the Kerrang team), Sabbat with a druid based concept album, which sounds a bit Spinal Tap, and actual Spinal Tap. Soundgarden are in the gig reviews and we consider the best cover version of Black Hole Sun we’ve ever heard. In our non Kerrang related meanderings we consider Indiana Jones, Right Said Fred’s non I’m Too Sexy ouevre, Whitney Houston and the Narada Michael Walden bass glide, Do The Bartman, The Cable Guy, and The Star Wars Holiday Special. We also introduce our new feature, Deep Kutz, and let you in on some “exciting” new developments with the podcast Recorded 13th September 2023 Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/can-i-pod-with-madness/id1667966016 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/69OGJDFZRFu5mjHja3rEOn Google Podcasts: https://podcasts.google.com/search/can%20i%20pod%20with%20madness Amazon Podcasts: https://music.amazon.com/podcasts/fa9908fc-34dd-4638-b446-eef44988dfd3 Check out pics from the issue on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podwithmadness/ YouTube playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6jGszBq8BFHFm7uddhMJ47gpLGTzYJPK&si=0Phb0AmP3Fnu4mQY Tip us on ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/podwithmadness CAN I POD WITH MADNESS THEME by Oliver Gardiner https://www.instagram.com/revilorenidrag/

9/5/2023
It's a monster length podcast as we go balls deep into K240, and have to come up for air halfway through, yes that's right kids, it's another two parter. When we're not dredging up half remembered kids' TV themes, we're examining Bret Michaels' contribution to the genre of Christmas music and investigate the unfathomable social media activity of the members of Def Leppard. Also in this issue: The Grip, Vixen, Last Crack, The Soho Roses, Tin Machine, adverts for Durex and All Clear shampoo, and a SCATHING review of Queen's new album. We ponder the US (or U.S.) Festival of 1983 and consider a Rashomon style retelling of said event featuring Mötley Crüe, Judas Priest, Ozzy Osbourne and Van Halen. In addition there's Steel Panther's Demolicious, Froggy Fresh, a reappraisal of Michael Bolton as a Glam metal act, Tongue Tied (again), Brookside and Hollyoaks' forays into horror, and the enigma that is Valensia. Finally we recommend a few of our favourite podcasts. Apologies if we missed you out but by this point we were becoming delirious. It's a long one (snarf snarf), so buckle up! PWM16: Kerrang 348 (July 6th 1991) - Psychic Sally’s Mystical BiOrb

8/22/2023
In this unprecedented format shattering episode we are bringing it bang up to date with an edition of Kerrang from 1991! What is the rock scene like in this new decade, in the brave new age of Grunge? Surely Guns N' Roses won't be on the cover again? Well they are, but only in an inset. Otherwise we've got Thunder, Little Angels and Suzie Hatton. Suzie who? We investigate! There's a review of the soundtrack to Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey which we're big fans of, and Deep Purple and Starship have compilations out. So you know, super modern up to the minute stuff! Also Stars in Their Eyes! Bette Midler (again)! Poison! Dread Zeppelin! Paul McKenna! And a massive shout out to Alan "Fluff" Freeman. Also we very nearly have a domestic over the Rock Aid Armenia charity version of Smoke on the Water! Don't worry kids, mum and dad aren't splitting up any time soon. PWM15: Kerrang 157 (Oct 10 1987) - The One With Karel Fialka, Emilie Autumn and Malfunkshun

8/9/2023
Axl Rose appears on the cover in one of his many disguises, and we're plunged back in time to the heady days of October 1987, when Kerrang deemed it appropriate to feature T'Pau, Then Jericho and Jethro Tull. Finally a Tull feature! We examine how well preserved Ian Anderson is now, in comparison to how wizened he seemed in ‘87, and ponder the finer points of Christmas music. In addition, Kerrang give us the best Mötley Crüe article we've had yet, but what makes it different? The answer may shock you. Also appearing in this issue: Bad News! Faster Pussycat! Joan Jett! Pan’s People! There's also a Marillion feature but we run out of time before we get to it. And lots of stuff about Friends (or do I have to write it as “F.R.I.E.N.D.S” now, like KISS?) PWM14 Top Ten Stadium Rock part 2

7/25/2023
Top Ten Stadium Rock (Channel 4, 19th February, 2000), a retrospective TV programme now so old it needs its own retrospective. In two parts! We look at Bon Jovi’s foray into the Star Wars universe, and applaud Skid Row’s Sebastian Bach for being the most entertaining interviewee on this programme (although we fail to mention his stint in Gilmore Girls). Van Halen’s yin and yang of Dave and Eddie is examined, with a side order of Ned Flanders. Warning, contains a blisteringly hot take about their biggest hit. Guns n’ Roses’ streetness and rawness is discussed along with Metallica’s rawness and streetness and we finish off with a discussion of Aerosmith, who are obviously the number one pick, despite some scathing criticism of a particular member of the band. We are (uncle) salty in this episode! We also cover the distress of buying bad CDs and adventures in file sharing in the early 2000s - all music history is here! Ghost controversy! Tusk! Poison (and Poizon) update! Muppets! Genesis and their Slipperman! Recreating Memento with cut outs from Kerrang and Metal Hammer! And of course, more KISS nonsense. PWM13 Top Ten Stadium Rock part 1

7/11/2023
As promised many moons ago we're finally getting around to Top Ten Stadium Rock (Channel 4, 19th February, 2000), a retrospective TV programme now so old it needs its own retrospective. So join us for lots of talk about the same bands we always talk about. KISS! Heart! Poison! ZZ Top! Motley Crue! Yes, that’s only five, this is such a big subject we’re splitting it into two episodes. Also what exactly is “Stadium Rock”? How did they work out the ranking? Has the tone and attitude of late 90s/early 2000s telly aged badly? In addition to that we have our review of Iron Maiden LIVE, unabashed Lin Shaye fandom, stuff about Threads (and "Threads"), the rise of the machines, even more Sarsippius content, and some exciting PWM news for all listeners Recorded 5th July 2023 Check out pics from the issue on our Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/podwithmadness/ Tip us on ko-fi: https://ko-fi.com/podwithmadness Youtube playlist of related study materials (not just one video!): https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL6jGszBq8BFEjZx-FjVLHcPKvWtlSs-v4

PWM12 Metal Hammer Vol 2, No 12, (Oct 29, 1987) - Female Induced Moshability

6/27/2023
Doro out of Warlock, but soon to be just Doro adorns the cover of this, the earliest edition of Metal Hammer we own. It's Halloween and there's weird stuff going on in the pages of this issue, though not the kind of weird stuff you might expect. Aerosmith's Steven Tyler is out and about in Germany, with some stories that probably need a content warning because they’re fucking gross, while Rush's Alex Lifeson can't see the point of making music videos. Some sort of early Guns n Roses backlash seems to be going on, while the idea that Alice Cooper would ever work with a female guitarist is deemed utterly improbable. In other news we review Steel Panther and Winger LIVE, fail to remember the name of one of Def Leppard's biggest hits, recommend Rob Halford's autobiography, shamelessly petition Audible for a sponsorship deal, and reminisce about meeting the greatest artist in the world of Prog Rock. Also: Def Leppard! Ice Age! KISS! and all the other bands we always talk about.
