Be More Like An OCTOPUS!

5/23/2023
The central brain and mini brains structure of the giant Pacific octopus highlights the significance of autonomy for individuals in contributing to an organization's vision. Just as the octopus's central brain coordinates overall functions while its mini brains control individual arms independently, individuals within an organization require autonomy to excel. Educators should aim to cultivate "mini-brain students" who are self-managing and possess the drive to figure out how to accomplish tasks. By fostering autonomy, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, we empower students to take ownership of their learning and become proactive contributors to their future endeavors. "Wicked" Learning!

4/11/2023
In this episode we discuss the importance of designing WICKED learning environments. According to David Epistein’s book “Range: Why Generalists Triumph in a Specialized World,” a wicked learning environment is one in which "the rules of the game are often unclear or incomplete, there may or may not be repetitive patterns and they may not be obvious, and feedback is often delayed, inaccurate, or both." Designing wicked learning experiences that are intentionally open-ended, ambiguous, and dynamic can challenge students to think critically, problem-solve creatively, and adapt to new situations. By obscuring some information, students are forced to seek out and synthesize multiple sources of knowledge. Students are encouraged to experiment and innovate by removing discernible rules, and are pushed to reflect on their own assumptions and biases and to be open to new perspectives by allowing work and learning to change. Shaun and David discuss how this disruptive approach of designing wicked learning environments can lead to more flexible and adaptive learners who are better equipped to handle the challenges of an ever-changing world. Be the Iceberg and Climb Your Mountain!

4/4/2023
This is our first podcast episode! We are two educators who talk about education all the time. It’s our work and our hobby! We thought why not also talk about education on a podcast. In this episode, we discuss what it means to be an “iceberg,” and why it’s important to identify your “mountain.” BE AN ICEBERG. Being an “iceberg” is to be a disruptive force that brings fresh perspectives, challenge existing norms and spur innovation. This leads to progress and new opportunities in the field. CLIMB YOUR MOUNTAIN Your “mountain” is a big goal that provides direction, motivation and a measure of progress. Taking action towards this goal is essential for making progress and realizing them. The journey towards the goal is equally important as it provides valuable experiences, learning opportunities, and personal growth. The journey can also lead to unexpected outcomes and discoveries that can be more rewarding than the goal itself.
