This week gets a little personal for Kendra, we are headed to her hometown of Belton, TX to talk about Kenneth McDuff, the serial killer that operated in her backyard in the early 1990s. McDuff is the only serial killer that has ended up on death row twice, sent there by two different juries in two different decades. This is a killer that Texas would like to forget. You see, after he killed 3 victims in 1968 and received the death penalty, he somehow slipped through the cracks and ended up back on the streets 21 years later. Was it because he was reformed and ready to be a normal part of society? Of course not, Kenneth was ready to kill again and unfortunately he would take the lives of many more women in Central Texas before being put away for good. On August 2, 1993, a group of seven hikers led by Lyudmila Korovina, set out on a planned multi-day trek through the Khamar-Daban range but failed to meet up with another group as scheduled. Six died but 17-year-old Valentina Utochenko survived. Much like the Dyatlov Pass Incident (which we will of course cover at some point) they all died in mysterious ways. This week on Lucid Lab we go way back for a wicked history tale that unfortunately seems all too relevant to our current days. In 1612 England, witch fever was at its peak and neighbors began accusing neighbors of witchcraft, many times with little to no evidence. Those accused had no real way to defend themselves against such wild accusations. In Lancashire County, a sad misunderstanding led to one family accusing each other of witchcraft and the star witness, a 9-year-old girl, coming forward to condemn many innocents to death. We will discuss this story as well as the history leading up to the witch trials in Europe and eventually how this all connects to the horrific Salem Witch Trials that followed in the US many years later where once again, the star witnesses were children.
