Ep #100: "The Future of Work is Neuroinclusion and Accessibility" with Jamie Shields

2/13/2024
I am celebrating my 100th podcast episode (Neuroqueering and Let Pleasure Be the Measure combined) with one of my new favorite people and the inspiration for my future work as I lean into creating cultures of neuroinclusion and accessibility. All the way from northern Ireland, welcome Jamie Shields! Jamie Shields is a registered blind AuDHD speaker, trainer, and consultant, who works with individuals and brands, helping them make inclusive accessible change. He is also the creator of Disabled by Society. Jamie and I talk about DEIB, including the concept of neurobelonging, an internal sense of belonging and self-acceptance. I ask "How do we get leaders of organizations to care about disability and accessibility before it is their own lived experience?" This leads to an important conversation about power, privilege, anger, ableism, discrimination, neurodiversity, and the importance of inclusive language. #33: "IFS (Internal Family Systems) therapy effectiveness for neurodivergent minds"

1/30/2024
In today's "Neuroqueering" podcast, Ellie Carn (she/they), psychotherapist, and host Pasha Marlowe (she/they), marriage and family therapist and coach, explain what IFS (Internal Family Systems/"parts" work) is and why it is so effective for neurodivergent minds, especially those with ADHD and autism. Ellie begins with an overview and history of IFS then describes what the therapeutic process of parts work looks like. Ellie shares how traditional therapy models are often pathologizing and ableist, whereas, IFS is beneficial for neurodivergent people as it is empowering, playful, guided by the client, and creates space to "meet clients where they are at". Ellie even ponders if "parts work" is, in essence, unmasking. Pasha and Ellie conclude by encouraging listeners to try many different therapists and therapy modalities. Ep. #32 "Building Psychological Safety Nets at Work"

1/16/2024
In psychologically safe workplaces, people feel safe voicing their opinions about conflict and mistakes-without the fear of negative consequences. Leaders need to be brave-brave enough to invite open and honest feedback. Leaders need to hear what’s really going on, so dysfunctional and unhealthy patterns can be interrupted and problems can be solved. But only when the most vulnerable team members, those with the most intersecting marginalized identities, feel free enough to express their thoughts and feelings, is an organization psychologically safe enough for everyone to thrive. In this episode, Pasha talks about the cultural transformation that occurs when you intend to create psychologically safe spaces. She also talks about the term "safe space" and how we can never guarantee safety for all. Finally, she offers a framework to build "psychological safety nets" through the lens of intersectionality and inclusion. #30 "Framework to Support Neurodivergent and Queer People" with Pasha Marlowe

12/10/2023
Part 2 of the Neuroqueering and Neurobelonging discussion This episode provides practical tools and a complete framework for supporting neurodivergent and queer people. The skills you learn today will help ALL leaders (parents, teachers, coaches, and therapists) be neurodiversity-affirming and gender- affirming. Pasha shares the framework that was presented at the international ADHD conference that includes intersectionality, asking, affirming, and advocating. Concepts of psychological safety, non-apparent disability, inclusive design, and safe space are explored. #28 "Microaggressions and Subtle Acts of Exclusion" with Rae Nelson

10/24/2023
Join Pasha Marlowe (she/her) and Rae Nelson (they/them), a DEIB leader and Human Resources Generalist, for a vulnerable and mind-shifting conversation about microaggressions and subtle acts of exclusion. Rae describes the 3 types of microaggressions and gives examples of each. They explain intention vs impact, implicit bias, and inclusive design through the lens of intersectionality, queerness, and non-apparent disability, and neurodiversity. #27 "Intense Leaders" with Leela Sinha

10/22/2023
Leela Sinha (ze/zir) joins me today to talk about zir work with the Intensives Institute and what it means to be an intensive. I have always identified as an intense person, so the intensive framework spoke to me. Leela shares that ze created the intensive framework because it makes people feel "less broken". So many of us intensives feel like we are "too much". We do not deal in small feelings. We are risk takers, innovators, and leaders. We go hard and come back for more. Often this causes conflict, especially in relationships, which Leela speaks to. We end with a discussion about intensive leaders can protect their boundaries and keep laughing, even as the world around us is experiencing collective trauma. #26 "Depathologizing and Neuroqueering Neurodivergence" with Pasha Marlowe

9/14/2023
This episode is short, but mighty! Pasha unpacks neuroqueering, neuronormativity, heteronormativity, and the current pathologizing language of neurodivergence. She talks about needing a paradigm shift, away from the pathology paradigm and towards the neurodiversity paradigm, which uses neurodiversity-affirming and strength-based language. Pasha encourages listeners to go beyond adopting less pathologizing language and make meaningful shifts in mindset and behavior. Somehow, in 9 minutes, she also works pigs and pancakes into the conversation. Hello, AuDHD! This is a small sample of Pasha's presentation on neuroqueering, which she is presenting at the 2023 Annual ADHD Conference. #25 "Midlife Emergence and the Messy Middle" with Jen Berlingo

8/22/2023
Jen Berlingo (she/her) is a coach, thought-leader, and best-selling author of the book "Midlife Emergence". She and I talk about how we unmask and unravel truths as we shed social, cultural, and familial layers. Like Jen and I experienced, many women and non-binary folx are living heterofacing lives and feeling like their marriages are "fine" or "good enough on paper". The thought of leaving to explore their sexuality feels scary and, sometimes, selfish. And yet, the whispers of knowing turn into screams and they start fantasizing about the paths not taken. They want more-more truth, more connection, and more pleasure. Jen and I discuss how coming out queer mirrors the journey of coming out neurodivergent. We dig into the language of neurodiversity and the messy middle and unpack systems of oppression. This is a revealing and empowering episode that will speak to any midlife person who is emerging through fear to the places that will set them free. Please share with a friend and it would mean the world if you would also subscribed to and/or reviewed the podcast. Thank you. "Masking Our Queerness and Neurodivergence" with Jillian Abby

7/19/2023
Jillian Abby, AKA @queerabby, author of "Perfectly Queer", and I share a conversation about coming out late in life queer and/or neurodivergent, the messy middle, the words we use when we talk about divorce and diagnosis, and how coming out often feels, but is NOT selfish. We challenge timeline narratives and social norms. According to who's time are we coming out "too late" or staying "too long" in our current relationships? According to who is this the "right way of thinking or loving"? Jill and I share our coming out stories and we normalize how COVID, the economy, and the housing crisis complicates matters more and often extends the messy middle. We talk about ADHD non-linear career paths and gaps in our resumes and how we hold so much shame around shifting gears and changing our minds. I give a shout out to one of my spiritual teachers, Rob Bell, as I reframe this phenomenon and explain the consistent "threads" that we weave throughout our lives that often, in true ADHD form, take on different shapes and forms. Finally, we discuss how it is NOT selfish to prioritize yourself! Coming out queer and even neurodivergent can FEEL selfish, and Jill and I honor the years of thoughtfulness and courage building that occur often before coming out. Jill says "It is hard to show up as the best version of ourselves if we are wearing a mask and hiding our truth." Introducing the world's best co-host for the "Neuroqueering" podcast, Sonny Jane Wise (@livedexperienceeducator and the author of the upcoming book "We are ALL Neurodiverse"). Coming to you from Australia tomorrow and Maine today, Sonny and Pasha invite you to engage in this expansive conversation on queering neuronormativity and heteronormativity and how unmasking all of our truths is a healing and revealing process. It's not just about our brains! Neurodivergence is about functioning differently from neuronormativity and social norms, not only divergent ways of thinking. The hosts share their experiences as to when and how they unpacked their queerness and multiple neurodivergencies and how they work to reduce shame and pathologizing in both realms. This conversation also extends to dynamics around trauma, bipolar, and the gatekeeping that shows up within and around the neurodivergent community. Favorite quote: "You can not accept how someone diverges from neuronormativity without recognizing how these norms are rooted in capitalism, ableism, and white supremacy." Oh! #19 "Embracing the Neurodivergent Umbrella and Neurodiversity Paradigm" with Sonny Jane Wise

2/15/2023
Sonny Jane Wise, the Lived Experience Educator, is a multiply neurodivergent advocate and the author of their upcoming book "The Neurodivergent Umbrella". They come to us today from Australia with brilliant thoughts and feelings about the neurodiversity paradigm, the difference between neurodiversity and neurodivergence, and why neurodivergence is far more about our mindbodies and how we function than how our brains are wired. We share ideas about reducing pathologizing language, challenging the DSM, supporting self-diagnoses, and why there should be less gatekeeping and more umbrellas with regards to the intended inclusivity of neurodivergence. Sonny shares their visions of a society that makes room for people to unmask and diverge without shame or judgement. #18: "Shift Your Neurodivergent Mindset" with Jaime Messina

2/8/2023
If you could use some Boston-style, no BS advice about how to love on your neurodivergent self, shift your mindset, and live the life you desire, have a listen to this episode with Jaime Messina, mindset and empowerment coach. Jaime explains why and how our brains brain as they do and how their primary purpose is to keep us safe. Because our brains can't tell the difference between what we are imagining and what is happening at real time, we have the ability to shift our mindset and, in turn, shift our lives. She offers clear and playful suggestions on how to talk to our brains by naming our thoughts and parts ("name it to tame it", Jaime says). If we can talk to our brains in kinder, more positive ways, "we will feel less like shit and have more ability and desire to take action". She challenges the limiting belief that because we are neurodivergent, mindset work will be more difficult. #17: "Impact of ADHD and RSD on Relationships"

2/2/2023
Pasha Marlowe, MFT, AuDHD and Neuroqueer Coach, specializes in coaching neurodivergent couples where one or both is ADHD and/or autistic. Her online program "Same Bed, Different Brains" has helped many couples move from the brink of divorce to a place of deeper understanding, acceptance, and intimacy. Pasha's coaching and teaching style is collaborative, inclusive, queer-friendly, sex and trauma informed, and often humorous. In this "hard love" episode, Pasha reveals personal and professional insights on the impact of ADHD and RSD (Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria) on a relationship. She explores common dynamics seen in neurodivergent couples, such as the "parent-child dynamic", lying to avoid conflict and/or intimacy, fear-shame-anger spirals, and the insidious RSD cycle (trauma-people pleasing-burnout-rejection). Pasha shares her most effective tools in managing ADHD ad RSD and reiterates that while ADHD is an explanation, not an excuse, BOTH partners have to come to the relationship with 100% effort towards understanding each other's brains. #16: "Broadening DEI Work to Include Intersectional Identities and Neurodiversity" with Jessi Purdy

1/24/2023
Jessi Purdy is an activist, public speaker, and the CEO of FIC Human Resource Partners, an organization that fosters inclusive cultures through policy, training, and discussion. Her identity as a panromantic, asexual, transwoman is central to her life and work. In this episode, Jessi and I discuss how DEI work is broadening to include intersectional identities and neurodiversity, including recognizing neurodivergent people as assets to an organization, as long as they are able to function authentically and are not confined by neurotypical standards and expectations. Jessi offers advice to organizations on how they can use their values, guiding principles, and DEI policy (specifically equity) to create an inclusive culture. She also shares how her experiences with ADHD and chronic illness impact and inspire the way she shows up for work. #15: "ADHD, Anxiety, and How to Stop Worrying" with Sandy Woznicki

1/17/2023
Join Pasha Marlowe, Neuroqueer Coach and Sandy Woznicki, Stress and Anxiety Coach, for a conversation on ADHD, Anxiety, and why we worry. We talk about the correlations and differences between ADHD and anxiety and how the conditions often manifest as ruminations, intrusive thoughts, and hyperfocusing. Sandy explains how anxiety is fear based and why worrying to problem solve is not a useful strategy. She suggests strategies such as being mindful and present, changing your inner monologue, and building a habit-belief structure.
