Becoming Emcee of BASS Elite Series with Dave Mercer - S2 E19

10/12/2017
Before he tells the story of becoming emcee of the BASS Elite Series, we have to wrap up our look at the 2017 Bassmaster Elite Series with the Angler of the Year tournament on Mille Lacs. Dave tells us how he has mixed feelings about this final stop of the tour, and how despite his admitted love for "little brother" Brandon Palaniuk, he hates that only one of the many deserving anglers gets crowned as the Angler of the Year. Last time we had Dave on the show, we talked for quite some time off the record. One of the most interesting stories he shared with me was the story of how he became the emcee for the Bassmaster Elite Series. The man has a talent for spinning yarns, and since it was "off-the-record" talk between he and I, we couldn't share that story at the time. However, before parting, Dave asked me that the next time we have him on the show, I remind him to tell that story. At last, the perfect opportunity had presented itself for Dave to return to the show, and tell this story: We've just wrapped up the Elite Series season, and our guest next week is none other than fishing legend Jerry McKinnis. You'll want to listen to this show as it will set the stage perfectly for our next two episodes. 2017 Elite Series Recap with Dave Mercer - S2 E18

10/5/2017
We reached out to Dave Mercer directly following our chat with Brandon Palaniuk. The 2017 Elite Series season had concluded, and we begged Dave to spare us thirty minutes to recap some season highlights, and tell one quick story about getting the Bassmaster Elite Series Emcee job. In true Dave Mercer fashion, he came through with more than an hour of hardcore Elite Series highlights. After some casual banter (which we had to leave in to truly show you what an awesome guy Dave is to talk to) we head right off the top with the first event on Lake Cherokee. Our conversation will carry you from the start of the season right up to the big finale at Mille Lacs where the Angler of the Year was decided this year. You'll have to tune in for Episode 19 to get Dave's coverage of the AOY tournament on Mille Lacs and the improbable story of how a Canadian guy with "no 5 year plan" has become the voice of the Bassmaster Elite Series. It's a story that sets the stage for our next guest, who is literally a legend in the fishing business and one of the founding fathers of the fishing shows we watch today... But that's all we're saying for now... Brandon Palaniuk 2017 Bassmaster AOY - S2 E17

9/28/2017
Brandon Palaniuk 2017 Bassmaster Angler of the Year joins us on the show for Episode 17. We couldn't have picked a better season to catch up with Brandon, checking in with him after the first event of the season on Lake Cherokee. We were even more fortunate to have Brandon join us on the show a second time to recap the second event of the season on Lake Okeechobee; an event that admittedly didn't go to plan for Brandon. Naturally, we've followed Brandon all year on his journey through the season, and for what has turned out to be a major milestone in his career. Sit back and relax as Brandon takes us tournament by tournament through every stop on the 2017 series. Brandon will candidly share with us his approach and mindset going into each new event, and we'll wrap up talking about his pilot project of having full-time coverage in his boat all season. Alton Jones and Alton Jones Jr. Bassmaster Elite Pros - S2 E16

9/21/2017
I have to say that Alton Jones and Alton Jones Jr. are nearly as much of an enigma as they are an open book. I know, that sounds very contradictory... In the course of researching our upcoming guests, we reach out to all sorts of folks to get an inside scoop, and we came up empty for the father and son elite series pros. However, their records tell you a lot about these two. Alton Sr. is a decorated winner on the B.A.S.S. tour for decades now, and after winning several opens, Alton Jr. qualified not only for the Bassmaster Classic, but a spot on the Elite Series trail. Quite the accomplishment; so rare in fact, they are to date the only father and son to compete against each other in the Elite Series. We catch up with Alton and Alton Jr. to pick up our discussion about the 2017 Elite Series, and more importantly, we learn a great deal about practice for these events. I've often wondered what the pro's thought about practice, as opinions vary, and some of the habits they have during practice. Some anglers like to catch fish, others fear they'll make the fish "hook-shy" after finding them so they avoid it at all costs. How much practice is too much practice? Is there such a thing as too much practice? And when you get on the fish come tournament time, do you save your spots for later in the weekend, or burn through a spot to make sure you get the biggest bag you can that day? We'll wrap up the conversation with a very important message from the Jones'. Alton Sr. was recently diagnosed with hearing damage; a result of his many years making runs up and down the lake chasing bass. You'll want to hear his message, and how it has impacted Alton Jr.'s view of hearing protection. Losing your hearing can cost you dearly on the water and off; Alton Jones can tell you how. An you'll find out how his newest partner has helped his hearing loss on the water and off. Father Son Elite Series Pros Alton Jones and Alton Jones Jr. - S2 E15

9/14/2017
Father Son elite series pros Alton Jones and Alton Jones Jr. join us this week on the first day of the Bassmaster Angler of the Year tournament. Both anglers have qualified for the unofficial final tournament of the season, but have their work cut out for them to make a last minute charge in the standings. We were fortunate enough to catch up with them just following the Elite Series event on Lake Champlain, so we'll not only get to know this father/son duo better, we'll also get an interesting look into the Bassmaster Elite Series from the perspective of the "old guard" and a series rookie. The Alton's take turns telling us about how they got into fishing, and Alton Jr. candidly discusses entering into the Elite Series sharing a name with one of it's greats; it's a lot of pressure, but he's equal to the task. They'll give us a good look at how the Angler of the Year points work, and share the ups and downs of the tournaments this year. We'll talk about Rookie of the Year points, and how Alton Jr. feels about the results of his first year on the series. Both anglers weigh in on how the AOY tournament will shake out, and ultimately agree it's between a handful of the series' finest anglers. Simon Frost from Frostbite Guide Services - S2 E14

9/7/2017
Simon Frost is the owner/operator of Frostbite Guide Services out of Southern Ontario. When we left off from episode 13, we were chatting about how down and side scanning sonar has changed the face of fishing, especially for those looking to eliminate unproductive water quickly. Simon shares with us a few of the amazing discoveries he's had scanning the bottom of the lakes he fishes. It's said time and again, that to find the fish, you want to find the structure and the cover. Simon shares his tips for identifying those constructive structures using this amazing technology and gives us some excellent advice on finding those "fish highways". I've never gone fishing with a guide per se, so naturally I was curious about the experience. Simon takes us step by step through the experience you get when you fish with Frostbite Guide Services; most importantly, a full day is a full day with Simon. It's clear he's a man who takes pride in what he does, and Simon tells us when he guides it's your party, but all you need to do is show up dressed for the day, lunch in hand, and he'll do the rest. We'll wrap up the show with some stories from Simon about the interesting folks he's shared time on the water with, and I ask Simon to share his best advice for people who want to learn how to be a better bass angler. Some of his answers may surprise you. Professional Guide and Tournament Angler Simon Frost - S2 E13

8/31/2017
Professional Guide and Tournament Angler Simon Frost is one of the best we have to offer here in Ontario. I was introduced to Simon by Dave Mercer at the Spring Boat and Fishing Show held annually in Toronto. Simon lives up to his nickname "Frost Man" as he's a really chill and relaxed sort of fellow; that is until you get him talking about fishing. He quickly thaws and the passion for the sport radiates from him. Simon shares with us his story in the first half of our interview; he tells us how he got into fishing, and how tournament fishing turned into his part-time career in guiding. He's an expert on the big water bodies we have locally, focusing on prime areas such as the Bay Of Quinte, The Niagara River, and Lake Erie. Simon makes his way out as far as Lake St. Clair for guiding trips, and no doubt knows the waters well. We'll talk about Simon's love of tournament angling, and he'll tell us about the dynamic between him and his unusual tournament partner: His wife, Melanie Frost. So, as usual, we'll get to know who Simon is and learn a little bit about the man. The conversation quickly steers into sage advice from a seasoned veteran about fishing big waters, and Simon shares loads of great tips about identifying productive water on massive water bodies. We'll wrap the conversation talking about electronics, and how they've become a vital part of getting people on fish, and continue on that subject in Episode 14. Classic Champion and Bassmaster Live Co-Host Davy Hite - S2 E12

8/24/2017
Bassmaster Classic Champion, former Elite Series Pro, and co-host of Bassmaster Live Davy Hite joins us again this week! We'll take a look at how the "First Look" segment was developed for Bassmaster, and how that naturally set the stage for a future co-hosting the Bassmaster Live coverage of the Elite Series. Davy talks about how being a professional angler made it natural for talking to other anglers; despite the natural angst of being on the sidelines. The conversation steers toward the impressive rookie class for the 2017 Elite Series Season. It's tough when you put guys who are so close to the action on the spot, as they have to stay objective when it comes to the anglers they cover. But after a quick chat about Jordan Lee and his obvious trajectory of success culminating with his 2017 Classic win, we move on to how the conversation started about Davy joining the Live team. I sum up this leg of the conversation with one of my favorite observations: Be careful what you say to Mark Zona. We'll wrap up our chat talking about the young anglers on the tour that we need to keep an eye on, and Davy shares some of his thoughts on who to watch. As we do with many of our guests, we do some digging and come up with some funny stories about Davy, but you'll want to hear him tell them. Bassmaster Live personality Davy Hite - S2 E11

8/17/2017
The newest member of the Bassmaster Live team, Classic Champion Davy Hite, joins us in this episode. You'd see him tournament after tournament, always with a smile, but sharp focus on the task at hand. We've all watched him on "First Look", and now we get a chance to watch even more of him working with our other past guests Dave Mercer and Mark Zona. The thing is, I can't really say I knew Davy Hite the man. Davy is a consummate professional; whether it's the way he'd prepare for tournaments, interact with other anglers, or even the way he deals with being and talking to the media. But there is greater depth to the man than what you see on "the shows". Our conversation took a familiar note very quickly, and soon Davy was sharing very personal stories about how he left his job with the National Guard to pursue a career as a professional angler. We're talking about the days before the internet, and the sharing of information, when a career like this was a mystery to all but those who'd already found out the hard way. You're going to learn about Davy Hite the man, and the angler, as we talk about his early days working toward becoming a champion. No story about Davy would be complete without discussing his heartbreaking loss to George Cochrane at the Bassmaster Classic, and how that catapulted him to win it down the road. We'll talk about the FLW, and winning the Cup in '98, his work with Tommy Sanders, Mark Zona, and Dave Mercer, and finish off with his latest leap of faith: leaving competitive fishing to join the Bassmaster Live team. Closed Seasons and Lure Recognition with Dr. David Philipp - S2 E10

8/10/2017
Closed Seasons and Lure Recognition with Dr. David Philipp are on the agenda in this episode of The One More Cast Show. The way seasons are closed during spawn is a hot-button topic for many. It's not just here in Canada, but in many regions of the United States seasons on game fish are closed. We get a chance to pick the brain of a thought leader in this area. David discusses the many roadblocks he's encountered over the years with governing bodies to local angler clubs; the problem often times is explaining the true intent of such efforts, as the message often becomes confused. The biggest hurdle is educating policy makers, and often times, they don't take enough time to fully understand the problem and potential solutions. As we've noted in past episodes, stocking programs are excellent, however, they don't always address the underlying problem. David has a solution to the problem of closed seasons and incidental catches during those seasons; the solution he suggests may surprise you. We'll wrap up this chat with another interesting and often debated topic: Lure Recognition. David and team have done exhaustive studies surrounding the link between angling vulnerability, parental care, and the idea that sport fishing may have impacted the evolution of largemouth bass. Again, I think some of the answers David brings to bear on the subject will surprise and amaze you. Conservation Geneticist Doctor David Philipp - S2 E9

8/3/2017
Conservation Geneticist Doctor David Philipp joins us on The One More Cast Show. Our friend, past guest, and conservationist Gord Pyzer wrote a revealing piece in Outdoor Canada on the work of this man, which inspired us to reach out and share his story. David is a biologist who is best known for his work in the fields of conservation genetics, reproductive ecology, and more recently the effects of recreational fishing on fish populations. David also shares with us a related study of lure recognition; a topic many anglers and scientists have debated over the years. In Episode 9, David shares with us his early years including his path to becoming a professor at the University of Illinois. We'll discuss the creation of the Fisheries Conservation Foundation for which he is a chairperson. Finally, we'll get an in-depth look at the behaviors of bass through the three key phases of reproduction: Pre-Spawn, Spawning, and Post-Spawn. David's research is fascinating, and we'd all be well served to take the time to understand the findings of his team, and others working in this vitally important field. Next week, we'll share part 2 of our conversation, wrapping up our discussion of spawning behaviors, discuss alternative solutions to traditional season closings for the spawn, and close out our chat with his findings on lure recognition. Tournament Walleye Angler Gary Parsons - S2 E8

7/27/2017
Tournament walleye angler Gary Parsons joins us again on the show this week with more secrets of the pros from the walleye world. We kick off this week's show leaning into a little bit of Gary's biologist background. He has some interesting thoughts about the bass angling world's proclivity toward natural colors when fishing, whereas in the walleye world, they are far more willing to try out brighter unnatural colors. Gary has been a key figure in product development with Berkley Fishing, and shares a little insider information about the testing process, particularly as it pertains to color selection. Prior to this interview, we canvassed a number of anglers to get some great questions, and Gary is more than happy to answer them. We'll talk about the strange habit walleye have of carefully examining a lure or bait before deciding to take it. Contrary to what most believe, walleye are not as shy as we may think, and Gary demonstrates this talking about one of his favorite techniques: ripping a shiver minnow. One of my greatest curiosities was the difference between fishing walleye in river systems versus fishing them in lakes. Admittedly, I am a complete rookie when it comes to fishing walleye, and Gary shares with us some interesting thoughts about how current changes the way you approach the water when targeting walleye. We'll close out the show with Gary's top three tips for anglers looking to chase gold. It's another highly educational show, and Gary lives up to his reputation as a teacher and a man who loves to teach others how to be more successful in their time out on the water. Gary Parsons from The Next Bite - S2 E7

7/20/2017
Gary Parsons from The Next Bite joins us on the show this week. If you follow The One More Cast Show, it could be said that we have a decided lean towards guests from the world of bass fishing. Well, what better way to buck the trend than by bringing you a show that's 100% dedicated to walleye fishing? Gary and partner Keith Kavajecz (and of course Chase Parsons) bring us the long-running television show "The Next Bite". If you're not familiar with the show, first, shame on you, and second, it's a show dedicated to fish with teeth. On every show the guys hunt down everything from walleye to musky, and bring it all to the comfort of your own home on network television, the world fishing network, and online. We catch up with Gary to talk about his past and how he came into the fishing industry. We'll dig deep into the walleye fishing tour, and his own past experiences participating in those tournaments. Tournament walleye fishing is something I've never done and Gary takes a lot of time to school me on the ins and outs, including understanding the format and differences in walleye tournaments in comparison to those of the bass fishing world. We'll turn the conversation to the mysteries of walleye fishing; a species of fish that continues to elude me to this day. If you want some top tier recommendations and tips from a man who knows walleye fishing better than anyone, you'll definitely want to tune in for this one! It's our very first dedicated walleye show! World Fishing Network Personality JP DeRose - S2 E4

6/29/2017
World Fishing Network personality JP DeRose pioneered the first of it's kind show Getting School'd covering the latest products coming out of the industry's premier tradeshow iCast. As he reveals in our conversation, the advent of real-time news through social media channels posed a series problem to the format of such a great show: Everything was old news by the time an episode would air. Enter Beyond The Cast... In this show, JP and team brought us another first in a consumer guide for fishing gear. Like Getting School'd the gear that was tested was also demonstrated on the water in what was a highly educational finale to each episode. You'll want to hear some of the candid "behind the scenes" thoughts JP shares about what his team really found about some of the products they tested and explains how they could create a truly honest consumer guide for fishing gear. No conversation would be complete without discussing JP's current show Breaking Boundaries. A fascinating show, highlighting the nearly infinite fishing species and opportunities world wide. JP brings us some of the most fascinating guests, and scenic locations, and explains how the idea came for presenting a world of fishing like a flow chart of family tree. We'll wrap up the show with a talk about the history of Bass Cat boats that JP produced and directed, and JP shares with us the work he's doing with the Renegade Bass Series here in Ontario, bringing the entire season to television for our viewing pleasure. Breaking Boundaries host JP DeRose - S2 E3

6/22/2017
Breaking Boundaries host JP DeRose is one of my favorite personalities in the industry. That is due, in large part, to the educational quality of the programs he's created over the years. When I first got back into fishing it was a friend who recommended JP's show Getting School'd; it was a show like no other, focusing not only on industry news but taking those products on to the water to show them in action. We'll get to know JP a little better, focusing on his early years growing up in Toronto, and how his path in the arts and love of fishing intersected. JP shares with us his unique powers of recall from gear specifications to days on the water, which lends to his ability to teach anglers about selecting the right gear for the application. JP is a really hand's on guy and "learn by doing" type, and we discuss how deep into the process he gets with his productions. The conversation turns to how JP made the leap from being a successful tournament angler into a key figure in a fledgling World Fishing Network. We truly get a really interesting look into JP's transition into show production, and the back story to the creation of one of my all-time favorite shows: Getting School'd If you want to know more about JP DeRose and his shows Getting School'd, Beyond the Cast, and Breaking Boundaries, you won't want to miss Episode 3 and 4 of our second season. Canadian Angling Legend Bob Izumi - S2 E1

6/8/2017
I've looked up to Bob Izumi since I was a child. His show inspired my imagination, and I often dreamed of the fish I'd catch next time I was up at the cottage or on a trip to somewhere new. When I was at home though, I could always count on a weekly dose of Bob Izumi's Real Fishing Show. We don't always have the chance to meet the people who inspire us, but as chance would have it, Bob and I connected and sat down to share his story. We'll talk about the early days and the impact his father had on tournament fishing in Ontario, and about Bob's early career. No chat would be complete without talking about the veritable army of Izumi's who are out there making their impact on the fishing industry. Sit back and enjoy our chat with the host of one of the longest running syndicated television shows in Canada: Bob Izumi. More with Facts of Fishing's Dave Mercer - S1 E52

6/1/2017
I've been called many things, but Dave Mercer comparing me to Oprah and Sally Jessy Raphael has got to be one of the strangest. When I got the chance to connect with Dave, I expected a great high-energy chat, but it was great getting to see the more thoughtful side of the man. In our last episode, Dave talked about his daughter's diagnosis of autism, something he really hadn't talked about before this interview. He shared some sage advice about keeping perspective and putting on your game face every day, and about how desire and dedication are key to achieving your goals. In part 3, we get exactly the Dave everyone expected: a fantastic story-telling, telling wild tales. Dave was so kind as to indulge me and share my very favorite story; one that appears in his book: 135 Secrets Fish Don't Want You To Know. You may know the "Bait Bucket" story, and it's one the poor guy has probably told a hundred times, but Dave tells it again for us, because that's the kind of guy he is. I can't imagine a higher note to finish season 1 of The One More Cast Show on...
