2/15/2023
Students and Graduates! Happy new year 2023, and I kickoff PhD Lounge into the new year with a Late-Night Interview! Louisa Hardwick is a PhD student based at Swansea University in Tourism within a Business Management context, researching Virtual Reality (VR) for people with limited physical mobility. With VR, Louisa's ambition is to change the paradigm of this new reality which is becoming more popular for the newest generations, but also for older ones! The chosen case studies for Louisa's research were Machu Picchu, Kenya and Borneo To know more about Louisa's research, check her Twitter: @louisabhardwick Thank you all for tuning in, it has been a pleasure! PhD Lounge Session 4: The PhD Iceberg Explained: Decision to go for a PhD, what to ponder?

10/18/2022
Students and Graduates! The PhD Lounge Podcast is back, and with a new session series! While I am still tremendously busy in researching and writing my PhD thesis, as well as trying to submit abstracts to participate into conferences, I am still emerged into the PhD Lounge Podcast to create new content around PhD and seeking PhD students to become my guests. First of all, congratulations to all students who entered in university this academic year, wishing all their best in this new journey that will demand from you in three or four years. For this new podcast series at the PhD Lounge, I am introducing the Iceberg theory, created by American journalist Ernest Hemingway, into the context of the PhD. This first episode of the PhD Iceberg explained, I describe six main points I personally consider where any student could think about once deciding to apply for a PhD. The decision of applying for a PhD would be the very first step which the any student starts to climb the iceberg until reaching the graduation results, which is the tip of the iceberg, and what is below slowly becomes ignored. With this new series, I try to call the attention of students and the general audience what a PhD is really about and what the title of Doctor of Philosophy heavily carries behind, literally years and years of research, writing and discussing. I hope you all enjoy hearing this first session of the PhD Iceberg Explained series. Thank you all for listening, it has been a pleasure! Support the Show. PhD Late-Night Interview guest John Rogers is a third year PhD student in Egyptology at Swansea University, researching local administration and non-elite perspectives during the reign of Psamtik I in the 26th Dynasty (664-610 BC). His research focuses on Psamtik I, an Egyptian king who is shown as a case study for the study of changing ideologies in the creation of kingship, in this case Psamtik I himself, through local administration and non-elite members viewpoints while using Assyrian and Anatolian sources. Further in his research, he also talks about the Saite Renaissance and the problematic inclusion of vocabulary that is unappropriated to the time in scrutiny. As in this context of Ancient Egypt, John argues his disagreement in attaching Renaissance, a term coined by art historians to describe the 15th century onwards the art and architecture in Italy and in other countries, to the Saite period (664-525 BC). Besides presenting his research, John also shares his educational background until reaching his current studies where he had studied and failed the GCSE exams in different fields such as Engineering (his main past passion) until his decision in studying Egyptology at Swansea University. Moreover, John shares his experience in how PhD can be hard and challenging when collecting data for research, and the mentality that any student who decides to study for a PhD must have in terms of thinking on a research question which will change throughout the PhD journey, as well as debunking that PhD studies are not for clever students, but yes for anyone. All this and more you shall hear during this late-night interview session, and if you want to know more about John Rogers, you can check his Facebook: John Rogers, and his Academia.edu profile: https://swansea.academia.edu/JohnRogers This Late-Night Interview was recorded in early May during the period of exams and BA dissertation submissions. Thank you all for tuning it, it has been a pleasure! Notes: During the interview, some of the information I was talking with had some missing knowledge regarding the percentage of students studying a PhD and who coined the term Hellenistic. Who coined the term Hellenistic: Johann Gustav Droysen in the 19th century to argue about the spread of Greek culture in other regions, specifically the near East. PhD Lounge Late Night-Interview: Freja Petrie: Head Impacts and Concussions in Women's Elite Rugby, Neck Strengthening Exercises, PhD Challenges and More…

4/20/2022
Students and Graduates! PhD Lounge Late-Night Interviews are back! 1st year PhD student at Swansea University, Freja Petrie shares her passion for Rugby and what led her to pursue this sport through the PhD study of Head Impacts and Concussions in Women's elite rugby. While she investigates this issue, she uses neck strengthening exercises as a research methodology solution that can help to reduce the scale of head concussions that can happen unexpectedly on women players whether during or after several rugby matches. An interesting topic in which she is at its beginning but has lots of potential to be published for anyone who is a sports scientist as well as to any student who wishes to study Sports and/or Sports Science in the future. PhD Lounge Session 3: Dissecting Ph.D.: The Origins of the Ph.D. Dissertation

2/15/2022
Students and Graduates! This first session of 2022 covers a time travel to the origins of the Ph.D. dissertation where it emerged from a discussion of ideas between students to be presented at oral presentations in universities before a panel of professors who were the presiders and promoters of oral ceremonies during the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, to printed versions to be read by academics, and then modelled to the German style of modern thinking and rationalisation as a work of research from the 19th century onwards. It also covers a brief look at the adoption of the German PhD dissertation model by other universities in Europe and in the United States, a look at different structures of conducting a PhD research, and some examples of famous PhD dissertations that contributed to the existing knowledge. My apologies for publishing at this time as the month of January was the period that I marked undergraduate assignments due to my teaching assistant role at Swansea University, and my apologies as well for any changes of my voice tone and for some English spoken words that may be imperceptible while you hear this session. PhD Lounge Late-Night Interview: David Finch: Arnold Bennett and his Critical Literary Reputation, Virginia Woolf's quarrel, Capital Cultural Theory, PhD Rabbit Holes and more…

11/17/2021
Students and Graduates! Here is the second late-night interview of the PhD Lounge Podcast. My second guest is David Finch who is in his second year of his PhD at Swansea University, researching about the literary and critical reputation of Arnold Bennett. His aim is to find the purpose of Bennett's literary fame, but most importantly what led other dominant critical voices of his time, and some contemporary ones, thought about him and how he overcame them. To support his research and his argument, Finch is applying Pierre Bourdieu's cultural capital theory. Finch also gives us a large history between Bennett and Virginia Woolf, another famous writer who wrote different novels, among those is Mr Bennett and Mrs Brown, and the reason of her vividly criticising towards Bennett's personality and works, alongside with other dominant critical voices which joined to her. This and other valuable information Finch speaks about can be heard throughout the interview. So, if you are studying or thinking in studying English literature, specifically Arnold Bennett and his literary genre, then this is the right podcast interview for YOU! If you are interested in talking with David Finch regarding his topic, send him an email at davidfinchg@aol.com Grab your phone or your laptop, put on your headphones or earplugs, have a cuppa of coffee or tea, and enjoy this fantastic conversation with David Finch. Thank you all for listening, it has been a pleasure! P.S. My apologies regarding the noisy sound from my guest's laptop as he does not has headphones, nor a microphone. I tried to drown it at my best through the background melody I apply to create good ambience throughout the podcast. Thank you for your understanding. #PhD #PhDlife #education Support the Show.
