The Phoenix - Scorched and Burned

2/21/2021
Season Two of Positively Purposed is taking a page out of the book of the Phoenix. While some have thrived over the last year that was 2020, there was undoubtedly a ton of negative effects that still had a strong impact on the life of many, causing challenges that we were not accustomed to dealing with. We are diving deep into the rebound, fueling the bounce back, triggering the recovery and supporting all things that are positively pushing us towards our happiness, passions and purpose. I recognize that 2020 was filled with death and adversity for many people. For me personally I felt lows that I have never felt before in my life, and quite frankly I didn’t think that was even possible. There were times I struggled with confidence, fear, loneliness, self-worth, lack of faith, anxiety, inconsistencies; the list goes on. There were so many things going on in both my personal and professional life that to say it has been a crossroad or transition phase is truly a gross understatement. I can’t even say with certainty that 2021 has brought all of this to a close, but I certainly have a new perspective that has me in a positive mindset. And that is always where I strive to be. I want to begin this Season Two by sharing with you ten FREE things I do that help to bring me happiness, even in small momentary doses. 1. Smile and laugh as often as possible throughout the day 2. 10 minutes of daily exercise 3. Sleep, sleep and more sleep 4. Practicing gratitude daily 5. Giving back to others 6. Spend some quality time with genuine loved ones 7. Meditation 8. Go outside in nature 9. R&R – I call these my home alone dates and you can create your own version, but basically it is special time that I set aside to be alone with myself and totally enjoy my own company. 10. This one is probably the only ‘action’ other than exercise, and that is reading a good book, working on something you are passionate about or completing a task on an old to do list. I find when I do something that I have been ‘meaning or wanting to do’ for a while and finally get it done, the feeling of accomplishment makes me very happy. Now that’s my list – and you can do any of these in 10 minutes or less. Of course, you can stretch them out for an hour if you want as well. Treat yourself it’s well worth it! Just one hour a day and you can knock out 6 of these every day, and imagine how much happier you will be! Life will always put tremendous challenges in our path, however it’s these hardships and misfortunes that help us to grow stronger, wiser and also present us with the choice to turn them into an opportunity. Happiness allows us to appreciate our circumstances, which in turn lead to growth and enlightenment. So forgive yourself for not loving you the way you deserve. Forgive others – especially those that do not ask for forgiveness. Keep your mind, body and spirit aligned with your truth. You will find yourself in a peaceful happy place rising from the ashes. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world. So push towards everything you have ever dreamed of. The Phoenix... that’s you!

Mindset, Motivation, Meditation and Me with Nina Danilee

7/26/2020
Today I give you my favorite take away from each of the Season One Episodes as well as share my three secret weapons for personal growth, positivity, and walking in my purpose. Your Biography Creates Your Biology. My biggest take away from Episode one had to be that the internal negative beliefs about ourselves, these tapes we create throughout our lives, are NOT TRUE and we need to give them attention so that they can be healed, and we can be happier internally, which in turn allows us to be healthy and happy externally. Manifesting Our Reality. As a strong believer in the Law of Attraction, my biggest take away was that we are manifesting either intentionally or by default and I absolutely always want to ensure my manifestations are very intentional. Making Major Moves gave me tons of inspiration to push my limits, put myself first, give myself grace, and remember that it is never too late to make a fresh start. Balance Does Not Exist and to be honest... that was my absolute biggest takeaway. Give things the time and energy they are due in their season and just know that everything has its season. Stepping Out On Faith - by far what stands out most to me is to have faith, believe in yourself, and know that everything will work out just as it should. Power of Positive People. I have to say my most impactful lesson from this conversation was to listen to your heartbeat, your gut, your intuition. Trust it because it rarely steers you wrong. New Levels, New Devils. My biggest take away was that we must not allow our lives to be dictated by our fears or the fears of others. Fear prevents us from growing and pursuing our passions. The underlying theme of Positively Purposed is to provide women support, stories, guidelines, and resources so that you know that in all things You Are Not alone, so this episode hit hard on the basics of having a happier, more fulfilled, stress-free life. Marijuana, Menopause, and Me. My most immediate takeaway notes were the beneficial effects for migraines and menstrual cramp which I have suffered from decades. Abused; Surviving and Thriving was a touching and uplifting episode about celebrating life after trauma. I learned the importance of setting boundaries, forgiving myself, and rewriting my story. Centre Against Abuse. I was blown away by the forms of abuse and how they manifest into behaviors that are literally meant to Gain and Maintain Power and Control over you. We wrapped up the Season with Relationships; Reset, Reignite or Revisit and how to know which road to take, but the message that resonated most with me was to simply be in a relationship where you both want the same thing. And that concludes Season ONE! The three secret weapons that help me to walk positively in my purpose are Mindset, Motivation, and Meditation. Over the years I have learned that mindset is the key to unlocking your potential, in all areas of your life, and as a result, I practice daily habits to train myself to better control the power of my mind. Now I am sure you have heard the saying Money is a Motivator’. Well, I have learned that motivation is not about anything or anyone else other than me. I have also learned from experience that meditation releases my stress, leverages my fears, calms my soul, focuses my mind, and relaxes my body. I haven't found anything else that has so many positive results in my life, so I practice this daily in my morning routine. Mindset, motivation, and meditation are all a part of my daily self-care routine. I created a free 7-day journal that can help you to implement your own daily routine to assist with getting you on track with walking positively towards your purpose. Feel free to download a copy from my website. I also offer a 30-minute consultation to guide you through getting the most out of your journal. www.positivelypurposedpodcast.com

Gain and Maintain Your Power with Centre Against Abuse

7/11/2020
Laurie Shiell is the Executive Director of the Centre Against Abuse, an accredited organization leading the charge in providing services to survivors of domestic abuse and sexual assault, in Bermuda. Laurie received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Spelman College, and her Masters in Educational Psychology from Howard University. She prides herself on taking a holistic approach to manage her clients’ needs. While Laurie has always been passionate about equality and justice for all, never in her wildest dreams would she have imagined that she would be a leading advocate through the Centre Against Abuse to eliminate domestic abuse and sexual assault in Bermuda. Joining her in today’s interview is Lauren Trott, the Clinical Supervisor and Counsellor of the organization. Abuse can come in so many different forms and while some are harsh and obvious, some can often be simply overlooked as just bad behavior. Mental, physical, emotional, social, spiritual, and verbal abuse can all be very hurtful, detrimental and even dangerous. Gaining and maintaining power and control over you is the primary motive of the abuser. Equality in a relationship means that you have a say and you are respected; you feel safe and your life is not controlled by another person. There are a variety of short- and long-term effects that can plague a woman as a result of abuse as a child and or an adult. These range from PTSD, anxiety, and depression to high blood pressure, migraines, and turning to alcohol or drugs to cope with the pain. It is important that when you are in a relationship you listen to that small voice inside that may tell you something is wrong, despite all the feel-good potential that you may be hoping for. Watch for red flags and respond to your own gut instincts, because they are rarely wrong. If you have been the unfortunate victim of abuse, but survived and are now out of the situation, be sure to take time to focus on yourself. When you put yourself first and take time to heal, your health and mental wellbeing will improve. You will experience a freedom that allows you to grow and accept happiness back into your life. Don’t allow your abuser to suck you into believing that he has changed, loves, and wants you back. It is all about regaining his control and is a temporary behavior that will revert back to his normal habits. Abuse is widespread and there are resources to help you and those you care about to manage the situation, and then get the support you need throughout the recovery process. Just like we need servicing for our cars, we need servicing for our hearts. Take care of yourself, keep your head up, and walk positively in your purpose. www.centreagainstabuse.bm info@centreagainstabuse.bm Instagram @centreagainstabusebda Bermuda (441) 292-4366

Abused; Surviving and Thriving with Dr. Melissa Jordan

7/4/2020
During the Corona Pandemic, domestic violence reports surged as people were forced to be quarantined in homes, often together with their abusers. Stress levels peaked and a variety of circumstances brought out the worst in people, triggering emotions and reactions. Of course, abuse isn’t new, this is not an occurrence that just started, but it is often a taboo conversation that is avoided because of the pain, guilt, hurt or embarrassment associated with the victims. Today we hear a story of success, a celebration of life, a revelation of a healing process, from an amazingly strong woman, as we dive into this sensitive topic of abuse. Melissa Jordan is a Doctor of Educational Leadership with over 15 years in her field. She began her career in education as a High School Counselor and is currently a high school administrator in Michigan. She is a wife, mother of 10-month-old twins, a life coach, and a podcaster. Melissa tells her traumatic story of violation starting from the tender age of 6 when she was the victim of sexual molestation for a number of years, at the hands of a family member that was supposed to love and protect her. Later in life, she landed in an abusive marriage that continued to tear at her spirit. There are some of you who have been abused or molested. There are some in abusive situations right now. There are others trying to get out of abusive relationships. And of course, those in the healing process or still recovering. You are her, you know her, or you have heard of her. The abused woman. She looks for love in the wrong places because her innocence wasn’t protected. She accepts treatment that she doesn’t deserve because her own self-worth was stolen. She puts her needs last because she has been made to feel guilty or selfish through narcissistic behavior. She blames herself for the way others treat her because she was manipulated. But then one day, she woke up and looked in the mirror and didn’t know or like the woman she had become. She recognized and remembered WHO SHE IS and gave herself permission to heal, to put herself first, to break the cycle, and to move forward in her strength. She set boundaries that couldn’t be broken. She forgave herself for accepting blame that wasn’t hers. She surrounded herself with a support shield of friends and family. She broke the Code of Silence. She sought out help. She rewrote her story. She healed. Dr. Melissa Jordan, you are a SHERO and we thank you for sharing your story of triumph to let others know that they can do the same. From a victim to a confident woman of power, not just surviving but thriving in life. We honour you. You are more than your past. You are more than your pain. You are strong. You are beautiful. You are worthy. Your healing is your right. Your present is your gift. And your future is your choice. Walk positively in your purpose and reclaim your crown, Queens. Marijuana, Menopause and Me with CannaMD

6/28/2020
CannaMD is committed to providing compassionate care through the evidence-based application of medical cannabis research. Our interview guest today is Jessica Walters, who graduated from Harvard where she studied neuropsychology and currently serves as CannaMD's Chief Medical Researcher. Today’s conversation will be an enlightened discussion on how and why cannabis can provide relief, support, and comfort to a variety of ailments that we suffer from. Now we know that marijuana or cannabis isn’t a medical drug designed to mitigate symptoms, it is a plant that contains a naturally occurring formula that happens to fit perfectly into our human endocannabinoid system. This has virtually miraculous results in most circumstances, and many of these treatable symptoms can be a result of menopause, hormones, pre-existing health conditions, or just daily life. Marijuana has been a taboo subject for so long with a number of stereotypes attached to it, some more accurate than others. Let’s do a little myth-busting and fact confirming in this regard. Cannabis users have been thought to be very calm and mellow. True. Medical marijuana has the innate ability to drastically reduce the feelings of stress and anxiety. The ‘munchies’. True. Medical marijuana restores the optimal regulation and balance between Omega 3 and Omega 6 in our bodies. So, while you may have the initial snack craving and consume more calories than normal, this quickly is remedied as it restores balance and increases your metabolism. The result is actually shown in studies as a smaller waistline, which is quite contrary to popular concern. On the flip side, an obese or overweight person would also benefit from the Omega 3 and 6 balancing acts, and consequently, lose weight as the balance is restored. Another stereotype is that marijuana makes you sleepy. Truth to a certain extent. Medical marijuana is useful for those with sleep challenges, restlessness, and insomnia; however, it doesn’t make you feel sluggish, it just gives you the ability to have a more restful sleep. Also proven, is that during daily hours, the result is a more focused and productive functioning person. One of my favorite revelations was the positive result for the reduction of migraine frequency, and the ability to slow down or stop the progression of a migraine already active. Medical marijuana has been proven to be just as effective for preventing migraines as its pharmaceutical counterparts. Finally, we learned that medical marijuana users reported an increased frequency of sexual intercourse, as well as improved sexual experience. These results we know can also be attributed to the fact that medical marijuana effectively mitigates other symptoms such as stress, pain, and exhaustion which also make intimacy less inviting or exciting. So inherently there are positive improvements all-around when these symptoms are no longer present. Medical marijuana is no different from regular marijuana except that it is legally produced, distributed and content regulated. The prescription can be consumed in a number of ways, so there is no need to panic if your preference does not include smoke inhalation. And just to be clear, there are options and opinions, but the facts are that medical marijuana must be legally prescribed by a registered distributor or physician and I strongly encourage you to confirm the laws of your country to ensure that you abide by the restrictions that you are legally bound. Know that you have options for your own health care. Educate yourself, and make informed health and wellness decisions, because your life is yours to live, and it’s so much easy to live in your purpose when you are healthy. You Are Not Alone with Dr. Larry Trott

6/20/2020
Dr. Larry Trott is a certified Holistic Healthcare Practitioner and Doctor of Metaphysical Studies. Since the early 1980s, Dr. Larry has coached thousands of people from all walks of life about wellness and raising their levels of consciousness. Today, my hope is that you take the opportunity to look at your life from a new lens, a positive perspective, with belief in your heart, knowing that while you have no control over outside circumstances, you do have the control to affect your own health, happiness, and life. First let’s recognize and acknowledge that where the chi goes the blood flows, so we want to keep our bodies free from blockages that prevent blood, nutrients, and oxygen from feeding our organs, brains, and heart. Feeling stressed is a major cause of these blockages which in turn causes illness and disease. Some people react differently to stressful situations because of the level that their energy is vibrating, so you want to engage in habits that help you to vibrate higher as a preventive measure. 10 things that can include are: 1. Get daily doses of sunshine, which provide vital nutrients for your overall health 2. Physically connect with the earth to balance your energy 3. Take the time to disconnect from people and things so that you can appreciate and be grateful for the things around you, using all your senses 4. Be conscious of the food that you eat and where it came from 5. Make self-care and self-love a priority 6. Find the time to read or study 7. Instill discipline in yourself to make healthy choices and stick with them 8. Surround yourself with like-minded, supportive people for consistent encouragement 9. Accept an offer help when it is needed; there are a variety of natural treatments, therapies, and support available to help you survive and thrive through stressful situations. 10. Find yourself a mentor, coach, healer, or therapist to keep you accountable for your ongoing growth. These are simple things that you can literally start today. Consider this when you are making decisions that affect your life; who are you really trying to appease? Don’t make a decision based on other people’s opinions or expectations. This is causing you self-harm. Focus on your purpose and prioritize self-preservation, without causing harm to anyone else. Change happens. That is the one guarantee in life. Having control of your thoughts allows you to better adjust and respond to change without feeling stressed or overwhelmed. We need to remember that our thoughts regulate our life. Taking control of your thoughts is the most important thing you can do on this planet if you want to live a happy, healthy, and whole life. Finally, please remember that mental health is not a topic to be ignored or judged. It is a real thing and by getting help to handle it you are not weak, you are regaining your strength or remaining strong. Ladies, I encourage you to pursue living your life on your terms, keep your mind clear, your actions positive, and your habits healthy so that you can live every day walking positively in your purpose. New Levels, New Devils with Lana Young

6/14/2020
Today’s guest is accomplished actress Lana Young. You may have seen her on TV in any number of roles from Greenleaf, Dynasty and Law & Order, to Ambitions, Southpaw, or Blindspot just to highlight a few. The silver screen is one of the toughest industries to survive and thrive in as a career, so Lana has definitely earned her stripes and learned a thing or two that we can glean from. Here are some of the valuable lessons we learn from her story. First, sometimes we have to prove to ourselves that we are capable of doing anything that we put our minds to. Lana kicked off her acting career doing a one-woman show in a language that she didn’t speak, with an accent she had to learn. This was her most challenging role ever but solidified her own beliefs in what she could do and set her on a path that would lead to a very successful career. Second, in a world that is very competitive, we need to focus our efforts on only being better than our former selves. We can find comparisons and justification outside of ourselves, but our biggest validation needs to come from within. Of course, we are human, and having the support of loved ones is always a benefit to any journey. But ultimately, you want to be your own judge. Third, what is too much for you? While molding her career as an artist Lana found herself working for free to build a reputation, draft her resume and learn the ropes, prior to landing paid gigs. These are examples of sacrifices that we have to be willing to make to take us where we want to go. You cannot do what everyone does and hope that it will take you somewhere different. Each level of accomplishment that you obtain as you evolve to another space, you will find there is a new challenge to overcome. Forth, learning to have a healthy and sustainable perspective for when you are not receiving the blessings you expect, is paramount. If you open your mind to receiving the wins, you attract more wins into your life. Your expectations become your reality and you have to think, believe, and feel that you are capable and will receive success. Fifth, just because this is not your time at this moment, doesn’t mean that your moment isn’t coming. As cliché as it sounds, everything happens when it is time and often, we need to learn, grow, or prepare better in order to be ready to receive the things that are coming our way. When we are ready to receive them, only then will they manifest. Sixth, we need to learn to look for the signs, listen to your gut, follow the breadcrumbs that are leading to your destination. We also need to appreciate the fact that there are valleys and peaks on the journey which must be traveled in order to get to your destination. We can get blinded by the tunnel vision of how a situation is directly or immediately affect us, however, we have to know that there is more around the corner and over the bend that we are not aware of. We are getting what is meant for us one way or the other, and if we spend time in the now, living in and appreciating the moment, we would be less worried about what the future holds. Lastly, we must not allow our lives to be dictated by our fears or the fears of others. Fear creates blockages in our path which prevents us from growing and pursuing our passions. Know that success is not a straight line from A to B. We have to be willing to fall down or fall short to move ahead, and when we accept that, we can move on and appreciate the prizes on the other side. I encourage you to pursue your passions, make steps towards your dreams, and live your life every day walking positively in your purpose. I am your midlife maven Nina Danilee. Power of Positive People with Tamara Richardson

6/7/2020
Today's guest is Tamara Richardson, a powerhouse business owner, and mother of two. Often times change is born out of pain. It can give us a new perspective on a lot of things that cause us to reflect differently on life. In that time of reflection, we learn and grow. Until you know better you cannot do better, however, once you know, it’s almost insanity to not do better. One of the things that contribute greatly to your health and well-being is the food that you put into your body. Plant-based diets are a healthy lifestyle option that is not only preventative to a lot of diseases but has also been proven to have the power to reverse some. When you become conscious of what you consume, you quickly begin to evaluate the changes in how you feel. You recognize the immediate benefits that result, and you have the opportunity to make some lifestyle changes. Travel can also be a tool for introspection and growth towards a happier life. Learning about other cultures, how they survive and thrive, their history, and how that entwines with your own. Maya Angelou says that You cannot know where you are going until you know where you have been. Take some time to study your past and see how that affects your current life, the world around you, and your future. We talk about how to stay positive and Tammy credits her optimistic outlook on life on exercise, plant-based eating, CBD, and reading. Exercise increases and improves blood flow around the body and subsequently to the heart and brain. It helps give us clarity of thought, energy, better sleep patterns, and overall general health. You look better, you feel better and as a result, you are happier. CBD (cannabis or medical marijuana) has been scientifically proven to be one of the healthiest natural benefits to most ailments that plague us today. You cannot always control what is around you, but you can certainly control what is happening inside of you. We are facing a double global pandemic that affects each and every one of us. There is no running away from it and hiding like it doesn’t exist or it isn’t really happening. Some will scream from the mountain tops and others will fight silently or behind the scenes. There is no right or wrong way to respond, but we must respond. It takes all of us to do what is right to make a sustainable change. Go within to determine why you think, feel and act that way you do. And then stay within, in order to determine how you need to respond after that self-reflection. Happiness is a choice. While we know that this is much more difficult when going through challenging times, it is only our reaction that is still within our control. This life is not promised to anyone. It is simply a gift that you must appreciate. You must respect others’ lives as much as your own. Choose to be happy. We must evaluate these things consistently to help us vibrate higher and remain positive during challenging times. 1. Our friends and relationships - Those closest to us can raise us up or pull us down. Look at your circle of friends and decide what they are doing for you. 2. What you consume – through food, what we put on our bodies and what we take in through media. The energy that you allow in your body will determine the energy that you are able to give out of your body. 3. Your Heartbeat – it will always tell you what is right, positive, and good. It also tells you what is bad, negative, and wrong. Learn to listen to the beat of your heart. We have to take the time to educate ourselves. Learn what makes you happier and healthier on the inside, so that you can create a happier and healthier you on the outside. Be purposeful. Stay Positive. Stepping Out On Faith with Sherri Vanderpool

5/31/2020
Sometimes we find ourselves on a life path that has been dictated by the expectations of those we love, respect, or want to appease. These can be verbalized expectations, and sometimes there are no words ever spoken, but we read the non-verbal signs so clearly, and then follow suit. How often do we as women find ourselves allowing other people to live out their goals through our life, at our expense? This can be a parent, a child, sibling, or partner. But it’s stifling our personal or professional growth. The great news is that we all have our tipping point, and when today's guest arrived at her point when she refused to allow her green card to expire. This pushed her to make a drastic change and take a huge leap of faith. She quit her job and left the country, without a clear plan of what was next. She chose the path that felt right for her, she made a decision based on what she knew she needed and wanted in her life for the long term, and then went for it wholeheartedly! As we go through phases in our life the personalities that influence us and how we move, often shift. We have to always listen to our inner selves and trust that we are the best person to advise us on our own life. After all, Who knows you better than you? Today’s guest is Sherri Vanderpool, former radio host on Collie Buddz’ VIBE 103, better known as Sherri Berri. With education and an established career in Social Work, she also has a love for modeling and all things entertainment. Throughout the next decade of her life, Sherri began to actively pursue her passions, taking risks, and stepping out on faith at every turn! Even when fearful, she found her voice, chased her passion, and is now living out the moments that she wanted to achieve. She’s been a host on a #1 radio station, she walked a runway in an international fashion week, she has her own podcast that was waiting in the planning stage for years. Do you know how fulfilling it is to be able to review the last few chapters of your book of life and be able to say… yeah, I did that. Ticking off some boxes and eagerly anticipating what you will achieve next. We can be surprised when we hear of how people perceive us from the outside looking in. It is so common for people to admire, respect, or be inspired by us … but we feel that we don’t live up to that vision of who they think we are. We have to remember that there is always someone that is watching, that we are inspiring, that we are motivating, or teaching by example. And we need to live our lives for our own purpose and shine brightly, as it may be a lighthouse for those that are truly in a dark space and need to follow the path you are creating. Every path will have obstacles along the way. It is how we face those obstacles that really speak to our character, our discipline, and our passion. When we get stuck, often it helps to just pause. Be still. Breathe. Clear your head and then when the world doesn’t appear as foggy you can recalibrate and refocus on where you want to go. More importantly, begin the steps to get there. You always want to be heading in the direction of something that you genuinely desire. Yes, there will be things you are doing that are not necessarily in line with your passions. It may be out of need, or out of greed… but the more you minimize these things and consciously pursue your true purpose, the more you find genuine happiness and fulfillment. Sometimes we can make carefully executed plans and other times we just need to step out on faith… but whatever you do don’t sit still and do nothing. The journey is half the fun, so begin to travel to your next destination. Instagram @givingh.e.d.

Balance Doesn't Exist with Danielle Paynter

Today’s guest is a lady that I’ve admired from afar for what appeared to be such a diverse lifestyle, juggling a million balls in the air and successfully keeping it together while always looking amazing. Of course, there is a story behind each and every one of us and I wanted to know what makes her tick. Danielle Paynter is a wife, mom, banker, DJ, community activist, and entrepreneur. Today she is chatting with us about her start as a young person and some experiences she had that helped to shape her personality and character that carried her into adulthood. We then discuss some of her basic philosophies and the growth mindset that she has as an adult entrepreneur, which really helps her to maintain and thrive in her life. One thing that always remains clear is that you must consciously create your tribe and be selective of the people that are closest to you, influencing you or providing input for your life. Those that we surround ourselves with greatly affect where we end up in life. Keep a positive circle of supportive friends and like-minded acquaintances. Coaching, education, and networking with like minds is invaluable. There is no better investment than the investment that you make into yourself. If there is something you want to achieve that requires a more advanced skill set than you currently possess, take that class, watch that webinar, research that course, listen to that podcast. Investing in yourself should be a priority for growth and self-fulfillment. Remember that taking care of yourself is not selfish, it allows you to fill up your own cup so that you can give from a place of abundance. When you consistently try to give from an empty cup you drain yourself and have nothing left to sustain yourself. This is of no benefit to you or anyone else, so make yourself your first priority so that you are healthy and full to give positive energy to others. We had a very unique chat about balance or the inability for it to exist. Danielle is a firm believer that everything has its season when it requires your full focus, and that actually trying to balance in those moments is detrimental to what you are trying to achieve. Allow yourself that time to let other things take a backseat while you focus your energy on what is a priority at the time. You can always go back and ‘level out’ on other things when it’s their time. Not everyone will agree with your choices of priority, but it’s not their job to agree, nor is it your job to take everyone’s advice. Make decisions according to what is best for you. We talk about having a growth mindset as opposed to a fixed mindset. If you have never heard the terms that were coined by Dr. Carol Dweck, a fixed mindset is represented by a person who is devasted by the smallest of setbacks, while a growth mindset refers to a person that learns from challenges and gets smarter and stronger because of them. Having a growth mindset is definitely an attribute that we all want to strive towards. We discuss the fear of failure, and Danielle said that her biggest fear is actually not one of failure but the fear of never reaching her full potential. This is the fear that drives her to always strive for her goals. For those with a fixed mindset, that fear alone could paralyze any positive movement or growth, while one with a growth mindset will use the fear to drive them to work harder and exert more effort to achieve the desired result. Danielle’s fear of not wanting to live a life filled with regret, helped her to strive even harder to build something for her community as well as for her family. In times of challenge, we often just need to pause, step back, and reassess the situation with fresh eyes. Reflect and reframe your perspective and shift your mindset to figure out a way forward. You have to be able to see the silver lining in every dark cloud. Instagram @thenabapp

Making Major Moves with Dr. Dana Zhyon Selassie

5/17/2020
You know those moments when you feel like you’re at a crossroad in life and a major decision is required to move you forward. It could be related to your career, your family or personal life… either way it feels a bit intimidating to say the least but oftentimes it’s just downright frightening. Do you sometimes get stuck right where you are… almost like you’re frozen and afraid to move one way or the other just because of the unknown, the fear of not being perfect, worrying about judgement or other peoples’ opinions, or maybe you have the desire to move but lack the strength to pull the trigger? Maybe you plan and plan and plan… but you just never actually execute. Today I am interview an experienced expert! Her life story for the last 2 and a half decades is nothing short of a movie. But what is most interesting is how she managed to make gigantic life changes every step of the way. Her story will show you it’s not only possible, but hopefully will inspire you to take some action of your own. Dr Dana Zhyon Selassie has made more major life moves than the average woman. I mean her relocating 8 times alone is no small feat. Add in having a couple of kids, getting married, getting divorced, and 4 degrees later … including a PHD…. Truly this is impressive! Through it all, Dana does not gloss over the struggles, challenges and trials that came along with such major moves. What she does subscribe to is that when you want something bad enough, when you’re passionate about something, you can make it happen against all odds. There are some very practical takeaways that I hope you can find opportunities to implement them into your own life when faced with major decisions, or even just to open the door to have more positive and meaningful experiences that are in alignment with what your heart desires, and where you want your life to go. Do you have your tribe of women to help and support you when you are in crisis mode? Even to keep you grounded in challenging situations, but most importantly to give you that positive push when you are ready to make a big change. Now we all have friends, family and colleagues. But choose this tribe wisely. We know that there will always be naysayers and we have to accept that their opinions may be valid for them, but not necessarily relevant to our own journey. Placing their thoughts in the appropriate box is important, and more important is surrounding ourselves with those that are positive and supportive. Another important thing to note is that we have to listen to our bodies and when it screams out for a break from pushing too hard, we need to stop, rest and take a break before our body forces us to stop. There is a time when we have to learn to be still, be peaceful and reset. You have to acknowledge your own successes and accomplishments, and what that does is ensure that others do the same. It’s not about being cocky or arrogant, it is about being confident and comfortable with who you are and getting to a place where you don’t need validation from other people. We need to recognize that perfection doesn’t exist, and we have to give ourselves permission to not be perfect. As long as we are always looking to grow and improve, we are on the right path. Never get stuck in feeling too comfortable with where you are. If you want to go somewhere you have to be true to yourself and trust your inner voice. It’s OK to go against the grain. It’s fine to make decisions that may not appear popular to others. And it’s absolutely acceptable to forge ahead with steps that push you towards your purpose and your dreams to achieve the level of fulfillment and happiness that you desire. On that note, I encourage you to follow Dr. Dana Selassie on her newest entrepreneurial journey where she continues to chase her passions. Instagram @zhyoninternational

Manifest Your Reality with Keema Perry

5/10/2020
Keema Perry is the founder of Powerhouse Manifesting Academy, a virtual manifesting school for women over 40 who long for more freedom and joy in their lives. Keema says “My purpose is to manifest a better version of me, from moment to moment”. We shouldn’t have our purpose tied to anyone or anything else, because if that disappears then we lose a part of ourselves, and we lose our purpose. Keema made a leap of faith, despite resistance, she abandoned stability to chase her passion. She was committed to moving forward without even being clear on her destination, but she knew that she needed and deserved better. She dove in headfirst, put in the work with a positive mindset and the doors continued to open for her. This was not a coincidence. She talks about how she KNEW that her business would be successful, even though she didn’t have a solid plan. And now she has a successful business and continues to teach and be a benefit to women like us! I am sure most of us have heard the saying ‘Money can’t buy you happiness’ and whether we believe it or not is a personal choice, but what money does allow is for us to live a certain standard that can contribute to our happiness. It can provide a level of freedom that gives us the ability to make choices that are not based on need or having to prioritize one thing over the other. Most of us have been programmed and conditioned to believe that we have to work hard for money or that we cannot have money. We have this subconscious mindset that has been developed since childhood and then deepened as we gained financial responsibility. We learn that if you change your mindset, that will help you to shift from where you are to where you want to be.. and then money begins to flow to you in unexpected ways. The Law of Attraction is a real law. Denying it is like saying that gravity doesn’t exist. So because of that, we are either manifesting deliberately or manifesting by default. It’s up to us which one we choose. We talk about vision boards and how we can use those to help define and visualize our goals. Do you know specifically what you want in your life? It seems like such a simple question, but so many of us will say ‘I want better’ but if asked what exactly that looks like… we don’t have an answer. When you become a deliberate manifestor you look at your life, decide that you want more and you take responsibility for your reality. We wrap up the episode leaving you with four exercises to challenge yourself into making that first step towards creating your reality. Our Biography Creates Our Biology with Dr Karen Simons

5/9/2020
As women, we deserve to constantly improve on ourselves, grow stronger and more confident with time. Unfortunately, we often get stuck in vicious cycles, including self-sabotaging thoughts that manifest into negative behavior patterns. These can range from binge eating, substance abuse, or telling yourself ‘I am not good enough’… struggling to remove ourselves from toxic relationships, not prioritizing ourselves, allowing people to disrespect or mistreat us, or simply failing to chase our passions. These are all destructive behaviors, some more severe than others, but all stemming from the same core negative thoughts. Today we dive deep into where our negative thought patterns stem from, how they replay in our minds and reflect in our behavior patterns, and decision making as adults. This information helps us to uncover the WHY we do what we do, and how that has become ingrained in us as a part of our biography. We discuss the stressors that can trigger these thoughts, and move into how these can create health issues, our biology. The exciting news is that there are some very simple ways that we can elevate our thoughts and feelings. Prayer, meditation, meaningful affirmations, walking on the beach, eating well, conscious breathing exercises, absorbing sunshine, listening to soothing music and dancing … these are all simple, free things, that we can do to ease our stress, calm our nervous systems and reduce our negative reactions. At the end of the day we must remember that these internal beliefs are simply not true, and we need to give them attention, so that they can be healed, and we can have a happier, healthier life. Dr Karen Simons is our debut interview guest who leads us through these discussions. She took a leap of faith from a two-decade career in a senior education position, to pursue a double doctorate and become a Metaphysical Healer and Transpersonal Psychotherapist. She has spent the last two decades helping people to find peace, happiness, and get healthier on all levels - physical, mental, emotional and spiritual. She leaves it all on the table when delving into these issues that can challenge us for life, or we can acknowledge them, heal them, and progress forward to have healthy and happy futures. Me, Myself and Why - The Introduction to Positively Purposed

4/24/2020
Please allow me to introduce myself to you in this episode, and give you my WHY... for creating Positively Purposed. I am your host Nina Danilee; divorced, self-employed mother of two adult children. I went through quite a challenging ordeal that left me feeling very scared and alone. Despite it all, I pulled through, but in hindsight I recognized that this was not the first time I had encountered a major life challenge, crossroad or turning point. I also acknowledged that I couldn't be the only woman in the world that could use a hand up ... not a hand out, when things got a little twisted. In a world full of women empowerment, I needed to feel personally connected to a source that addressed things that I specifically knew that my peers and I had endured. I mention the types of changes that we encounter as mature women in the prime of our life, and leave you with 5 little tidbits of general advise which address: 1. Taking care of your body so that you are physically able to enjoy life. 2. Taking care of your mind, because that controls the outcome of your life. 3. Recognizing and valuing your own worth, regardless of outside opinions. 4. Reacting to change positively, so that you can better control your reality, as opposed to being controlled by the circumstance. 5. Loving yourself and others as a priority, as opposed to things and material possessions. I remind you that you're never too old to make a change, you're never too smart to learn something new, and it's never too late to follow your passions that lead to your dreams. The important thing is that you love life and walk positively in your purpose. I encourage you to hit subscribe so that you don't miss upcoming episodes, when we will have very interesting, intriguing and intelligent women joining us to share their stories and expertise, giving you the power to take control of your life, redefine yourself and reclaim your purpose.
