Physical therapist, Coach, Speaker and Business Owner Natasha Wilch joins us to discuss Concussion Care and what it means to be a Moment Maker

9/21/2023
In this episode, Natasha Wilch, a licensed physical therapist from Nanaimo, British Columbia, discusses her experience working with concussion and brain injury patients. She has a clinic called Symphony Brain Performance and also has a company that trains medical professionals across the world on how to treat concussions. Natasha's motivation stems from her own struggles with mental illness and her father's work accident that resulted in brain injury. She underlines the significance of prioritizing one's needs, especially for working women. She also talks about business coaching within the Concussion Nerds network and their coaching services for people with ongoing concussion symptoms. About Our Natasha Wilch: Natasha Wilch has been a Registered Physical Therapist since 2011. She attended the University of British Columbia where she earned a Bachelors in Health Science & Kinesiology and then her Masters in Physical Therapy. Growing up in the small town of Cranbrook, BC, she always wanted to work in health care. You'd find her volunteering in the hospital’s extended care unit playing piano for the residents, decorating for the season, and reading. As a teenager, she volunteered throughout the hospital as a candy striper. The scope of physical therapy is massive and a therapist can choose to specialize in many different areas. From day one, Natasha has worked in neurology. She was inspired by her cousin, who became a quadriplegic after a motorcycle accident, and his stories about the amazing therapists who influenced him and helped him start a new chapter in his life. Natasha focused her clinical practice on working with individuals with spinal cord, stroke, Parkinson’s, and other neurological diagnoses. She continued to develop her toolbox in post-graduate education in neurological rehab, functional neurology, chronic pain, IMS, acupuncture, neuro-optometry, and more. When Natasha relocated to Nanaimo, BC in 2014 she wasn’t sure what to do next. She was on maternity leave with her 4-month-old son, Hudson... and this turned out to be a blessing. As she began to look for work in her new city it became clear that there was a massive care gap for the neurological population she loved to treat. She decided to open her own clinic. Symphony Rehabilitation became official in May 2015. Today, Natasha's passion is evolving the conversation and culture of concussions around the world. She does that through her clinic, Symphony Brain Performance, her online mentorship program for clinicians, Concussion Nerds, and speaking engagements. She believes powerfully that change will come from the front lines - the clinicians and clients. But for clinicians to do their best work they also need to take care of themselves. Natasha supports the WHOLE PERSON. About Symphony Rehabilitation They are located in Nanaimo, BC and they absolutely love getting to work with the island community as well as their clients who travel from all over North America. They will work with you 1:1 throughout your journey of concussion, neurological diagnosis, vestibular challenges, or simply wanting to optimize your health and wellness. They have also been offering virtual services since 2017 as location shouldn't be a barrier to you receiving the treatment you need, and it isn't! Connect with them online and they can help you take the next step forward in your journey of health, wellness, and rehab. Let's get you back to your life! Physician, philanthropist, founder and CEO of Troy Medical, Dr. Kara Hartl discusses her innovative approach to telemedicine to provide quality medical specialists to remote and medically underserved communities

4/20/2023
Today's guest, Dr. Kara Hartl shares her journey in medicine, from moving to Alaska to start a practice in an underserved community to creating Troy Medical after witnessing one of her own patients become overwhelmed by a debilitating medical condition. About our guest: Dr. Kara Hartl is a physician, philanthropist, Harvard graduate and the founder and CEO of Troy Medical, an innovative approach to telemedicine that uses technology to bring high-quality medical specialists to remote and medically underserved communities. After 14 years of living in rural Alaska, Dr. Hartl has seen firsthand the limitations geography can have on access to medical care. She is passionate about creating a new gold standard for telemedicine in underserved America via their groundbreaking hybrid model. Dr. Hartl was inspired to start Troy Medical after witnessing one of her own patients become overwhelmed by a debilitating medical condition. Unable to find a medical specialist in his region, his condition had progressed to the point where even walking was a challenge. Dr. Hartl recognized the potential of telemedicine to bring life-changing care to remote areas, so she reached out to specialists across the country to organize a team of doctors who can provide world-class, personalized medical care to patients anywhere. She chose to name this project after her patient, Troy. Prior to founding Troy Medical, Dr. Kara Hartl created a world-class medical center in Alaska. Using her entrepreneurial spirit, she grew a multi-specialty health center from the ground up and created the most technologically advanced medical and surgical center in the state. Dr. Hartl developed high-level systems for virtually every aspect of her business, from designing an ophthalmic technician training program to defining hospital protocols. Through her work at this facility, she raised the standards of ophthalmic medicine in Alaska to the highest levels in the country. It was Dr. Hartl’s desire to improve the world that first led her into medicine. She has worked internationally curing blindness in underserved countries, started the non-profit Gift of Sight to expand her reach, and founded the Prevention of Global Blindness fellowship to inspire the next generation of doctors. With the same spirit, Dr. Hartl recently expanded her focus into the world of medical technology, an exponential field that is changing the way we will practice medicine. She is passionate about incorporating technology into the future of medicine and expanding access to the highest quality medical care across the country and beyond. Dr. Hartl graduated from Harvard University and the University of California-San Diego Medical School. She also trained at the world-renowned Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. So, when health care really gets it right, the design of care is human centered, meaning it addresses individuals’ and families’ needs effectively, inclusively, and, when possible, proactively. -Elizabeth Teisberg, Executive Director of The Value Institute of Healthcare Starting a practice is no small feat, but Dr. Chinwe knew she not only wanted to start her own practice, but she wanted to create a youth centered practice that was unconventional and focused on meeting the needs of today's youth. In today's episode, Dr. Chinwe talks about what led her to start her own Pediatric practice, Centered Youth Clinic and Consulting (CYCC), the impact of community and the importance of family. About our guest: Dr. Chinwe Efuribe is a Nigerian-American Pediatrician with over 16 years of clinical care experience across the globe in various clinical settings. Beyond the United States, her time spent caring for patients in the United Kingdom, Africa, and Canada allowed her to develop a cross-cultural approach to pediatric health care and promotion. After working in group practice and community health centers, she founded Centered Youth Clinic and Consulting (CYCC) to create more youth-friendly health spaces and coach adolescents to take charge of their health. The clinic provides direct primary and specialty care services with community partnerships for positive youth development. CYCC also offers training opportunities for clinical teams seeking to enhance skills in adolescent contraceptive counseling and procedures. Chinwe enjoys leading intergenerational, multidisciplinary teams in various settings to create new systems for improved outcomes. She has expertise integrating youth engagement into the infrastructure of youth-serving organizations. As a former church youth ministries director, she established processes for youth engagement in programs promoting wellness of the mind, body and soul for adolescents. She has also developed youth engagement initiatives for the Society for Adolescent Health Medicine, Austin Black Physicians Association, Texas Youth Friendly Initiative, Adolescent Health Initiative, and American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Efuribe is board-certified in Pediatrics & Lifestyle Medicine, fellowship-trained in Adolescent Medicine, and obtained a Master of Public Health in Community Health Promotion. She also serves as the Title X Medical Director for Every Body Texas. Personally, Chinwe loves to laugh, is grounded by her faith, is an innovative, community-builder whose love languages are acts of service and quality time.

Replay: Let's talk about sex with Kate Roberts, Social Entrepreneur and Founder of The Body Agency.

3/22/2023
Sex education– an active fight to break the stigma and promote sexual health, and controversy for some. With so many people finding the topic taboo, it’s so easy to overlook the issues that come with being misinformed on what’s meant to be a natural part of being human. In this episode, I’m joined by Kate Roberts, a social entrepreneur that founded The Body Agency, a company that aims to aid women and increase awareness in sexual wellness while being aware and considerate of both political and religious barriers. In addition, she’s also the host of the Sex, Body, and Soul podcast, where she has open conversations about sexual wellness, fertility, periods, parenting, menopause, and more. Episode Highlights: What brought Kate into the world of women's health and advocacy How Kate uses The Body Agency to navigate the sexual wellness space. How Kate works around political and religious barriers to teach women about sexual wellness. About our guest: Kate Roberts' late father was a ship’s captain. By the time Kate was twelve she had seen more of the world, its beauty, vastness and social inequities than most people would see in two lifetimes. These early life imprints, coupled with several harrowing experiences she endured while working in Eastern Europe, fueled in her a fierce determination to make a difference in the lives of women around the globe. Kate sees obstacles as opportunities and thrives on challenges. She often describes herself as a ”serial” social entrepreneur; seizing opportunity, launching initiatives, and then moving on to “what’s next.” She is a woman driven by passion and purpose. From 1999 until recently, Kate was Senior Vice President for Population Services International (PSI), a Washington, DC based $500M global NGO, that operates in 50 countries. By establishing meaningful relationships with a number of successful business women and philanthropists, she has raised hundreds of millions of dollars; created public and private partnerships and impacted the lives of women across the world. As a leader in global philanthropy and social change Roberts has parlayed her business acumen and marketing background into a “Madison Avenue” approach; setting concrete goals and delivering measurable results. To that end, in 2012 Roberts founded Maverick Collective (a PSI initiative) to develop impactful projects in the developing world with which to tackle women’s health issues. Engaging Melinda Gates, Dr. Precious Motsepe and the Crown Princess of Norway as Co-Chairs, Maverick Collective is redefining what it means to be an effective philanthropist and innovator. Kate describes herself as a pioneer in developing a new type of philanthropy – going beyond the checkbook, using time, talent, and treasure to become a more powerful and efficient advocate for mission-driven philanthropy to end extreme poverty. Historically, Kate’s energies have been focused on global initiatives. Recently, her vision has brought her focus closer to home. Early in 2020 Roberts launched Ikigai Company, a private consulting practice dedicated to advising families, individuals and organizations on strategies to design and execute customized and purpose-driven fundraising. Inspired by the importance of empowering women at the most fundamental level, Kate founded The Body Agency, an ecommerce, femtech start-up and a global movement making it easy for women to have access to body health and sexual wellness products, services and education. Her aim is to provide women of all ages and cultural backgrounds an online sanctuary for exploring their body health and intimacy in a modern, affordable and fearless way. Public speaker, and producer of documentaries, and fluent in five languages, Kate routinely appears on TV and in print media, reprising her role as a champion for all that supports the ethos of women. Examples include: 2007 Young Global Leader at The World Economic Forum (WEF), Founding Curator of WEF Global Shapers, Fox News Power...
