The best way to give your self-confidence a quick boost is to quickly review all your past successes. Close your eyes – unless you are listening to this podcast while you are driving your car. Now I want you to think back to a time when you successfully faced a challenge that you thought was bigger than yourself. Recall how you felt at that time. Did you feel full of self-doubt? Did you think the challenge was impossible? Did you want to run away from the challenge? Did you feel that you may have bit off more than you could chew? Next try to recall what you did to take on that challenge. What you did in the past when you faced a challenge that frightened you might help you combat the butterflies you are feeling inside of you as you face this next big challenge. Now, recall how you felt after you completed that challenge you once felt was impossible, too big to tackle, bigger than you. How did you feel after completing that challenge? Did you feel triumphant? Did you feel victorious? Did you take a victory lap? Did you feel like celebrating? Did you feel like singing “We Are the Champions”, or “Take a Look at Me Now”? How high was your self-confidence after facing and completing the once-impossible challenge? Would you like to experience those feelings of euphoria again? Now open your eyes and start using your memories of past successes to pump up your self-confidence for the challenge you are facing now. When you need a quick boost to your self-confidence, you do not need to recall success over a big challenge you have faced in the past. You could use any success you have achieved in the past. The size of the success does not really matter as much as the fact that you have created and experienced success in your life. Victim Mentality damages the self-confidence of persons with disabilities.

9/5/2023
As a person with a disability: If these kinds of thoughts happen occasionally, that is not uncommon. However, if you have these feelings most or all the time, then you are living life with a victim mentality! The victim mentality is when a person feels like a victim in many to every situation, even when evidence is presented that suggests or proves otherwise. Persons with a disability who have a victim mentality always seem to have an explanation for why they are not successful, and that explanation frequently blames persons without disabilities by using the word “ableists” and blaming the world which they call an “ableist society”. When a person blames others and believes the world is against them, this is a sign they are not taking ownership of their actions or even their life. Here is a little quiz that will help you see if you are living with a victim mentality. If you answered yes to 3 or more of those questions, then more than likely you are living with a victim mentality and that is dangerous. Why is victim mentality dangerous? Because it can and will impact many areas of your life, including relationships, work, health, and your professional success. The victim mentality can lead to feelings that others who you perceive to have power over you and who are more successful than yourself are entitled and privileged which may lead you to feel oppressed and discriminated against which may lead to feelings of self-pity and if not careful, victim mentality can lead to self-hatred, and all of this can lead to low self-confidence. Victim mentality is a mindset and to overcome victim mentality you must change your mindset.
