EP29. We Are Coming to the End of Our Civilisation

3/22/2026
Human beings are attached not to life but to living — to the mortal body, to possessions, relationships, and the structures of the world — and that this attachment makes us worship death rather than realise the immortal life that we are. Barry says that when tragedy strikes, especially in public events of mass death, most people are not grieving life itself but reacting to the shock of their own mortality reflected back at them. Against this, Barry says – life is one, universal, and undying – and that real understanding begins when a person stops identifying so completely with the fragile conditions of living and starts acknowledging life directly, moment by moment, with gratitude. Barry offers a fierce critique of civilisation, religion, war, and human nature in the wake of September 11. Barry rejects the idea of any 'holy war' or of God being on one side against another, and says the violence of the world is the expression of collective human nature unfolding through history. He portrays modern civilisation as both protective and deadening: it comforts us, but distances us from life, so that only shock and tragedy briefly bring people back into immediacy and truth. His practical emphasis is not political hope but inward detachment — less belief, less fearful thinking, less dependence on certainty — and a deeper recognition that while living is unstable and perishable, life itself remains untouched. 'We are coming to the end of our civilization. We are now facing our own human nature, and there is no escape.' ~ Source: This is drawn from the three hour long Gold Coast Talk recorded on the 30th of September, 2001. The recording is part of the Gold Coast Talks set and is available to purchase here – https://www.barrylong.org/products/audio/gold-coast-talks-2001-bundle. Later in 2026 all Gold Coast Talks, including this one, will be available to stream in the The Barry Long Archive. ~ From the archive: 📃 Terrorism – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/263/terrorism – Barry Long writing in 1983 predicted the rise of global terrorism as a reaction to western materialism. He saw 'paranational terrorism' as a new expression of human power, which would utilise suicidal fighters, get mixed up with nationalistic and religious struggles on every continent and contribute to the end of the current civilisation. 📃 The end of the world and afterwards – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/16/the-end-of-the-world-and-afterwards – There have been many prophecies about the coming end of time, or the end of the world. Barry Long also prophesied an end to the world as we know it. In 1985, when he was writing about prayer, he also referred to the inevitable end of our civilisation. He read and recorded these writings on a cassette tape called 'The End of the World'. The text was later published as 'The Way of Prayer' and included in a book, 'The Way In'. He said that one day he would have more to say about who and what would survive the end of the world. That day came in 2002, a year before he died. These late writings were included along with the original text in the book 'A Prayer For Life'. ~ About The Barry Long Archive: The Barry Long Archive is a repository of over 20 years of Barry Long’s teachings. EP28. Shakti: The Power of Divine Love

3/14/2026
We are pleased to make this full recording available free as part of The Barry Long Podcast. Out of the more than 2,000 recordings preserved in The Barry Long Archive, this is one of the very few in which Barry enters so deeply into the mystery of Shakti. Barry describes Shakti as the divine feminine power, the power of love in existence, and as the very power of the universe. He speaks of Shakti as the living divine force waiting in woman, called forth through sufficient love, surrender, and purity, and he presents the meeting of man and woman not merely as a human relationship but as a sacred means through which divine love may appear in the world. “Shakti is waiting in every woman, waiting to come into every woman, and every woman knows it's there, because all she wants to do is be consumed in love...” “...the more beautiful a woman becomes, the more difficult it is for him to retain his orgasm – to stand a woman's beauty requires increasing consciousness...” The real work is the transformation of sex into love: man must relinquish selfishness, emotional baggage, fantasy, and his hard and aggressive manhood in order to love deeply enough, while woman must remain true to the divine reality within her. As woman opens in love she releases Shakti and she becomes extraordinarily beautiful, and that has a tremendous effect on man. ~ Source of this recording: This is the fifth and final recording from Barry Long’s 2 Day Talk in Sydney, 1996, recorded on 14 December 1996. Sex and Love: The Crucial Distinction

1/22/2026
Barry draws a sharp distinction between sex and love: true love, especially between devoted partners, travels down into the subconscious and disturbs the past, bringing up old doubt, heartbreak, conditioning, and stored emotional patterns so they can be seen rather than lived as present reality. He says the right response is stillness—recognising what rises as past unreality—so love can do its work and lead to increasing detachment from feelings and eventual freedom. Sex, by contrast, may satisfy present desire but it disturbs the emotions in a way that produces cycles of excitement and depression. Sex is a drug — and leads to restlessness rather than settled love. Barry describes the beauty of man and woman disappearing into each other through love, not the mind’s sexual excitement. Barry then speaks of the watcher or the witness in everyone — utterly uninvolved, always present— whose deepest point is the Lord, and reads letters describing realizations of pristine stillness, ordinariness, and the sense of being nothing behind all appearances. He stresses that this is not mere talk or philosophy but a descent into being, and warns that the mind—tied to senses and practical life—is an utter obstacle in matters of God and truth; the practice is to leave the mind in neutral and rest in stillness, like dreamless sleep, letting doubts lose their force. Then, in extended dialogue with attendees, he addresses the fear of stillness, self-consciousness, celibacy and not giving thoughts or images continuity, the gradual stopping of thinking as fear subsides, and practical struggles (including smoking, drinking, and sexual momentum,) repeatedly bringing people back to simplicity, honesty, and being. ~ Source: This is recording 16 of 20 from the Master Sessions of 1996, recorded on 8 November 1996 at Cabarita on Australia’s Tweed Coast. God’s Will and Man’s World: The Disaster of Progress

12/4/2025
Barry Long addresses the troubling question of who is really in charge of this world when our era is so full of suffering, violence, division, degradation and confusion. “I’ve been asked, ‘Is God in charge? Surely God is in charge of everything – then God must be doing all this.’” Barry distinguishes between God’s world – the living earth, the seasons, the body and the simple fact of being here – and man’s world of cities, money, institutions and technology, which is built entirely out of thought and desire. God, he says, gave man free will and does not interfere, because real love does not control, and man has decided to go his own way. The disastrous state of society is the accumulated result of human choices against life. Barry talks about how progress, entertainment and even art are used to escape pain, while underneath humanity lives with continuous psychic pain. His answer is to withdraw support from man’s corrupt world and return to the purity of life now. ~ This is recording six of six in the 1997 LEICESTER series, recorded in July of 1997. Karma is Not Just Personal | Personal Purification as the Path to Collective Spiritual Renewal

7/21/2025
This is the 5th recording in a series of 11, originally captured on March 2nd, 1997, during a 5-day session in Sydney, Australia. We’ve recently digitised and remastered these recordings from their original analog formats, and we’re pleased to share this one freely. This and many other recordings will soon be available through a comprehensive archive offering over 30 years of Barry’s teachings, available by subscription. Additional materials are also accessible through subscription on Apple Podcasts (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-barry-long-podcast/id1709595005) and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/34rcMFK6b4CcicY7JDxo9f) ~ Summary: In this recording Barry Long urges each person to turn within, recognising themselves as the centre of their own universe, and to take responsibility for transforming the inherited ignorance of humanity. He explains karma as collective, not merely individual, and emphasises that one’s true task is to purify one’s inner light for the benefit of all mankind. Barry talks about the inescapable inheritance of human karma, suggesting acceptance of life’s burdens and the surrender of futile resistance. Barry Long guides listeners toward releasing selfishness, accepting their circumstances, and discovering freedom through consciousness. ~ Extracts: "The point of the evolution of life on earth is for each of us to become cosmic enough as cells in the great body of mankind to enter the place of cosmic or universal love; to get rid of the sentimental love that ruins this earth, which makes everybody unhappy. That’s what your spiritual process is. You are actually getting rid of your self and your selfishness so that you can be with this universal love, this universal intelligence, this universal truth. That’s what draws you on. And that’s why you can’t give up the process. No matter what you try to do, you must have this love..." 'You are the most important thing on earth, as long as you are going down into your own being.' 'Everything every day is the past repeating itself in different clothing, in different circumstances, but it repeats itself… The ignorance of the past repeats itself in the present.' 'You are a cell in the great body of mankind, and our karma is not just what your life, your past, has made for it… The karma that is to repeat itself in existence is the karma of the human race.' 'The purpose of life is for me to purify myself, my cell, so there’s this renewal every second...' 'Love is of the earth. To lie with my beloved on the earth, to make love on the earth… Making love is of the earth; making sex is of the mind.' 'Consciousness has the immediate knowledge of everything, everything that I need to know, if I live in consciousness… But if I live in my human mind, I worry about this and I want to know that.' ~ Further reading: 📄 Aphorisms - Earth/World – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/283/aphorisms-earthworld – 📄 Facing life as it is – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/4/facing-life-as-it-is 📄 The Can of Worms – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/72/the-can-of-worms 📄 The Objective Truth of the Psyche – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/93/the-objective-truth-of-the-psyche Support the show All content © The Barry Long Trust

Bringing Your Divine Partner into Existence: The Secret to Perfect Love

4/27/2025
This is recording 3 of 6 from a three-day meeting recorded on the 14th of May, 2000 in Coolangatta, Gold Coast, Australia. These materials were recently digitized and modernized from older formats after an extensive restoration process, and we are happy to offer them freely. The complete audio recordings from this meeting set will be made available later in the year in the subscriber-only podcast through Apple Podcast – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-barry-long-podcast/id1709595005 and Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/34rcMFK6b4CcicY7JDxo9f In this episode, Barry describes the journey from attachment to detachment. He explains that while the beauty of existence — in flowers, the sea, and human love — is real and wondrous, it is attachment to form that causes suffering. Living the spiritual life leads to living the life divine — a state that occurs when one ceases to live from the self, and a greater intelligence begins to live through one. As this unfolds, true union — free of possession — becomes possible, and one draws to oneself one’s perfect mate. Barry says – "...your whole life is about bringing her or him into existence. Not someone outside you. Not a dream. But the true woman, the true man, the divine principle behind the body. And no one else can do it for you. You must live, love, and surrender enough for your true mate to be made real in your life." Barry goes on to describe the nature of the self: a band within the psyche where emotions and attachments dwell. He says that human suffering arises from being possessed by negative emotions rooted in the psychic realm, accumulated over generations. By acknowledging the good in life, loving purely without attachment, and surrendering the selfish will, individuals gradually illuminate their perfect body — a deeper, divine something within the psyche. The true purpose of life, Barry says, is to light up this perfect body through love and detachment, by undergoing the circumstances of one’s life rightly — by suffering rightly. In time, a moment comes when suffering is no longer needed, when the self falls away and the psyche stands purified — and what is is the life divine. ~ Extracts: "The first sign of the true love coming into existence is that you never, ever want to be apart. You never want to go anywhere alone, unless you have to, of course. Always together. Always. But if you want to go and be alone — if you want to go down to the football club or have a night out with the girls — well, you’ve got some time to keep going until you bring this extraordinary principle of woman or man into existence in a body." "When you're next angry, do you see that you're being manipulated? This is what we are talking about — starting to live the spiritual life — when you can see that your anger, your resentment, your negativity is not love but possession. Until you desist from being identified with these emotions, until you are purified of them, you cannot truly love or bring the perfect love into existence." ~ Further reading: 📄 "Shakti" – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/259/shakti – "Shakti is the power of divine love waiting to enter woman and come through her to man..." 📄 "Original Tantra" – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/257/original-tantra 📄 "Love Is Not A Feeling" – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/253/love-is-not-a-feeling-%E2%80%93-article 📄 "Love Burns" – https://www.barrylong.org/archive/articles/223/love-burns – "You must not lose yourself in love or you’ll suffer for nothing, like most do, when the object of love departs in time, as it must..." Love and Growing Old

1/21/2025
This is the second of four talks from Barry Long’s 'Truth of Love Seminar,' originally recorded in Bristol in 1992—over three decades ago. Newly remastered from old analog tapes, this recording is now preserved in digital form. We are happy to offer this particular recording for free. The complete series will be available through our paid podcast subscription and the upcoming Archive Application, set for release in 2025. The paid edition of the podcast is available through Apple Podcasts – https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-barry-long-podcast/id1709595005 and Spotify – https://open.spotify.com/show/34rcMFK6b4CcicY7JDxo9f ~ Summary: In this episode Barry Long addresses those who are growing older — especially women — urging them to remain open to love, regardless of age or past experiences. He acknowledges that many in their fifties, sixties, or seventies may feel content without a partner and even find the idea of relationship burdensome. Nonetheless, he emphasizes that if love — or the possibility of a good, honest partnership—presents itself, one should be receptive and that age is no barrier to intimacy or genuine connection when it arises naturally and without force. Central to Barry’s message is the need to be at peace within oneself, cultivating a sense of well-being and integrity in every aspect of life. By getting one’s life right and releasing emotional states such as fear, resentment, or longing, we create the internal space for the right person to appear — at the right time and under the right circumstances. He cautions against living in a state of restless yearning; instead, trusting that when love is meant to come, it will, and it will arrive as part of life’s inherent goodness. ~ Highlights and extracts: "Life is its own solution. Life is not perverse. Although we often think it is. Life is a process, a wonderful process of integrity. There is justice and rightness in life. As long as we can stand back far enough and observe it. The difficulty is with personal love, that it makes us put our eyes right up close to the scene, and we can't see the total picture." "Be open all your life for the possibility of love coming in as man or woman, no matter how old you are. And be open even to the possibility of making love, no matter how old you are. You don't have to make love – you are free. But don't have an attitude against it. Don't ever think that you're too old. It is not true. You are never too old to stop making physical love. Given that the man or woman arrives and you are drawn together you are never too old to make physical love." "Don't be disappointed. Don't be discouraged by anything that has happened in your life. It was your lot. Everything that happened to you was absolutely right, and it was to make a finer a man or a finer a woman of you." ~ We are happy to announce our work on an extensive digital archive of Barry’s talks, spanning an extraordinary 30 years. This comprehensive repository features over 600 hours of video and 2,000 hours of audio recordings, offering unparalleled access to Barry’s timeless insights and teachings. 12/31/2024

Recently, this recording was digitally remastered to enhance its clarity and quality. The complete series is available for purchase through the online store: https://www.barrylong.org/series/gold-coast-talks The paid version of The Barry Long Podcast offers an expanding library of Barry’s teachings. This collection includes a mix of talks from the online store and exclusive, previously unreleased recordings. ~ Summary: In this talk Barry explores the profound question of why humans suffer, delving into the intricacies of human emotions and the illusions that perpetuate suffering. He challenges narratives that trap individuals in cycles of pain and suffering, pointing to the deep-seated human propensity for attachment – our tendency to cling to what causes us pain. Barry says that by moving beyond emotional suffering and embracing the stillness of being individuals can uncover a life of profound liberation and peace – this is the sacrifice of the self – and the next step in our evolution. ~~ Extracts: 'So I ask you, will you make the great sacrifice – the great self sacrifice? ... let me tell you what self sacrifice is. I give up my moodiness. I don't have to display it to anyone and get knighted or something for it. I have to do it in this body, in this space without any positive demonstration of what I'm doing, because if I give up my moodiness, I give up the positive demonstration of moodiness, and then what am I? Well, I'm not moody. And who's going to notice that? Well, some people might notice that he or she is never moody. Isn't that en-lightening?' 'Do you want this life to go on, up and down, up and down? You meet a new man or a woman. You're all up here. You make beautiful love, isn't it wonderful? Then a month later, bang, what's happened to our love? What have we done? Why are we growing apart? Why? – Because of ignorance. Simply, ignorance. Why does the love that you first have – why does it have to go stale? You know how beautiful is when you first meet, when your bodies are first together, making love, it's wonderful, it's glorious, you want it to go on forever – well, that's true, because that's the body's making love. As soon as the human comes into making love, love goes out the window, all those thoughts, all those judgments of the other, all those self doubts, moodiness comes up, opinions come up, and an emotion comes between us that we cannot see except that we can feel, and we despair of that drives us apart, and we say to each other, 'what's happened to us?,' 'where is all the love we had?'' ~ We are happy to announce our work on an extensive digital archive of Barry’s talks, spanning an extraordinary 30 years. The Human Condition

9/16/2024
This full-length recording, recently restored, remastered, and made freely available, was originally recorded in July 1997 at Koningshof, Netherlands. This recording is the fifth in a series of seven recordings. The complete set will be released later in 2024 in the paid versions of the podcast on Apple Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-barry-long-podcast/id1709595005) and Spotify (https://open.spotify.com/show/34rcMFK6b4CcicY7JDxo9f). ~ Summary: In this episode, Barry describes the human condition as one of suffering or attachment to suffering. He says, "I define the self—my self—as the accumulation of all the unhappy emotions I have experienced since birth. Each emotion, from infancy through childhood, and especially the disastrous sexual experiences, disappointments, bitterness, and heartbreak—all of it gathers in the subconscious as emotion." Barry continues, "The better things get, the more the self will try to destroy it—your own self, not someone else's—because it's made of pain. Whenever there is harmony or sweetness in a relationship or within your own body, the self emerges. Once the self, which is pain, enters a painless situation, that situation inevitably becomes painful." This, he says, is our fundamental human condition. ~ Extract: My 'self,' this pain in my body, has been running my life as long as I can remember – it's been running my life in that body, listening to me. It makes my decision who I'm going to make a partnership with. It makes decisions on the looks of people. It makes decisions on how it feels at the moment – and all these feelings are not true. It makes decisions out of fear. It makes decisions out of the terrible lack of security inside – it's always insecure inside, so it goes for the money instead of the joy of the job. It goes for the sex instead of love. It goes for everything that causes problems and unhappiness. If you look at all the people around you – and you have to observe them pretty closely – you will see that everybody is unfulfilled, unhappy in some way, making excuses for the lack of love in their life. It's this self that makes the excuses, making excuses for what mum and dad demands on me, making excuses – 'well, that's all right –' while inside, something in me, in that body, knows that there's something wrong. 'I don't want this demand of people on me, I just don't I don't enjoy it, It's not right, –' and yet my self puts up with it, and my self makes excuses for it. God is in charge of everything. God the great creator behind all existence and my body and my life – your life – that I can realize within. That's the easy part, although it's terribly hard and terribly rare to realize God within, but to bring that God into existence, to eliminate unhappiness from this body, which is your that your body to eliminate the self's utter obsession with itself and being unhappy. Master of the West

8/9/2024
This full-length recording, restored and re-mastered recently, and made available freely, was recorded in November, 1985. In this episode Barry proclaims that he is a Master of the West and he has had the experiences of the Western man or woman, and therefore he can talk to them as one of them. More episodes are available in the paid version of the podcast, available on Apple Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-barry-long-podcast/id1709595005) and Spotify Podcast (https://open.spotify.com/show/34rcMFK6b4CcicY7JDxo9f) ~ Extracts from this episode: • I am a Western guru. I do not mystify. I am guru of the West. I do not need to use abstractions. I speak right down to earth where my fellow man and woman have to play and work in the muck of the West. Where it is hard because it is competitive, cruel, unjust, violent. I am of this violent and cruel culture. Just about everything that you have done has happened to me. So, I am with you. I am not in some robe. I am an ordinary man as you are an ordinary man or woman. • I know everything that is going on in you. I have had the experience so that I would be able to speak to you at every level. I've raised children. I've had to leave a wife and two children. I'd done that. Watch the woman that I love die of cancer and serve her. I've done that. Worked 9 to 5. 12 in the night to six o'clock in the morning. Started at 6 o'clock in the morning. I've done that. Had a rotten boss on top. Paid the rates and been completely ignorant in my body and my mind – but I am not ignorant any longer. I am here. I have enlightened this brain of its dependence on the past, of its dependence on promises. On its dependence on expectations, its dependence on tomorrow. • There is no tomorrow. But tomorrow always comes there is no tomorrow because there is only now to be free. I can only be free and now. I can't be free tomorrow. I can only be free now. Are you free now? It just means to give up the past now. Give up all yearning for the past. When we want the repetition of yesterday we're always looking forward to tomorrow. • Are you free now? Do not worry about tomorrow because if you worry about tomorrow you created tomorrow. Be free now. And tomorrow will come. And it'll be alright. • If you worry about tomorrow, you create tomorrow's worry. You are anxious about tomorrow. You create the anxiety of tomorrow. And so tomorrow will be filled with anxiety. It will be filled with problems. ~ We are pleased to announce our work on an extensive digital archive of Barry's talks over 30 years – this expansive repository houses an impressive collection comprising approximately 500 hours of video footage and a staggering 2000 hours of audio recordings, spanning a rich tapestry of content accumulated over the course of three decades. We're here to discover the truth together, the most remarkable thing that man and woman can do, there is nothing else to do but discover the truth together, obviously... Why I am here is to show it to you to demonstrate it in your own experience, so that you can do it when you are not with me. Many teachers tell you the truth, and they are beautiful to be with. But the point is that YOU have to do it... The truth is not here to entertain you. The truth is here purely to free you. The thing that wants to discuss it, understand it, be interested in it, or interpreted is the only burden that you have... ~ Barry Long was a spiritual teacher who taught internationally from the 1980's up until his death in 2003. Taking charge of your own life OR Being responsible for your own life

6/2/2024
This full-length recording, made available freely, was recorded on the 29th of July 1999. This recording is one of twelve in this series. The series is available in the paid version of the podcast, available on The Barry Long Podcast on Apple Podcast (https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/the-barry-long-podcast/id1709595005) and Spotify Podcast (https://open.spotify.com/show/34rcMFK6b4CcicY7JDxo9f) ~ Extracts from this episode: Taking charge of your own life. Being responsible for your own life. This is a rare thing in existence because people act from their feelings. And they think that's being responsible for their life. But then it is the feelings being responsible for the life because the feelings make the decision, instead of the intelligence that you are. And feelings are emotions. There is no good feeling. If you have a good feeling, then you are going to have a bad feeling. Because in this existence, this existence exists on opposites. For every good feeling, there's a bad feeling. For every up, there's a down and everyone's struggling to get ups all the time... The human condition is based on endeavouring to be happy. And as soon as you endeavour to be happy, there is a reflex action that's going on in your psyche that is going to bring the endeavour to be unhappy. Is it true in your experience? What is very difficult for people to see it because we live attached to everything that we do, acting out of our emotions, and our feelings – we have a momentum going on all the time. We're so busy trying to be happy that we forget that our bad times came from something that pleased us two years ago... Once when you and your lover first came together, it was so beautiful, it was so lovely. And then it started to slip. Because what was beautiful was taken for granted. Well, true love is beautiful. But not imagined love, not love without intelligence – it's only beautiful for a while. And then you have to pay the price of a downer depression, uncertainty about your lover or your own life. When you get down here in depression – what do you do? What can human nature do when you go into depression? You can get drunk, as we see on the movies. You can do that. But then that's no good, because that gives you an upper. And the next day you got a downer. So then you got to have another upper and a downer. So then you get into the drug situation where you take an upper. So you get a downer. And this is how humanity lives... So what's the enlightened truth of this? The truth is – the only fulfilment is – never to be excited, which means never to be depressed. That's the only way of living in this existence without being torn up and pulled down, torn up, pulled up, torn down... ~ Barry Long was a spiritual teacher who taught internationally from the 1980's up until his death in 2003. To be the truth is to be free of unhappiness

4/18/2024
This full-length recording, made available freely, was recorded on the 14th of August 1994 in Colorado. This recording is one of eight in the Colorado Talks 1994 series. The series is available in the paid version of the podcast, available on Apple Podcast and Spotify Podcast. Extracts from this episode: I am master of the West – and you are all Westerners, you are not easterners. Unless you are addressed in the Western way, you won't be able to live the teaching of truth, you won't be able to be the truth, no matter who you are... To be the truth is to be free of unhappiness – I am the only one that has ever said that... You have no right to be unhappy – I have no right to be unhappy – ever, ever, ever. You don't have a right because your son died to be unhappy. Get it? You don't have a right to be unhappy because you got cancer. Get it? You know, I'm talking ever, ever, ever... The spiritual path is a path of ignorance. When you reach the truth, there is no path, there is what is. Support the show All content © The Barry Long Trust

What is love?

11/28/2023
Excerpts: I live with a woman or a man, if I'm a woman, to enjoy being together. What we've got to examine is what stops us from enjoying being together? That would be a reasonable question, wouldn't it? Man is with woman, where I come from, for her to help him to give up his structures – only to help him, as he is with her to help her to give up emotion. So it's a two-way deal. Man's main difficulty in living with woman is that he won't listen to her. If he gets emotional, where I come from, it is right for his partner woman to say, 'Why are you emotional?' If he gets angry, the same thing it is right for his partner to say, 'why are you angry?' Now there's no reason that he should not reply straightly why he's angry. 'I'm angry because of the way you speak with to me.' Then, 'what is it about the way I speak to you that makes you angry?' And so the questions can go on, as long as both are willing to engage in a straight conversation what I call them intelligent conversation. But there's no good one of them being intelligent. Without the other, that's hopeless. A real woman is she who is true to the situation – not to be true to your own feelings, but to be true to the situation. So what is the situation between man and woman? The situation is that we are together to enjoy ourselves. And I do not enjoy your anger, if you're angry. And so I will point that out to you when you're angry, trusting that you are intelligent enough to either say the source of it, or to get rid of it within you. So that's been true to the situation. And if the man doesn't get rid of his anger, and insists on his that he has right to be angry or emotional, then the woman has to be a real woman has to very, very seriously look at whether she can remain in this relationship. Because it won't get better, no matter how much she thinks she can change a man unless he is willing to listen, she cannot change him. She only thinks she can. Because she thinks her love is so strong, that she can change anything, it's not true. There has to be a willingness to change. Support the show All content © The Barry Long Trust

Speaking of love

11/15/2023
Keywords: love and sexual drive, resonance and reflection, civilisation and emotion, making love without sexual stimulation, making love, the nature of man and his sexual drive, the difference between man and woman, woman is fundamentally love, man's sexual drive seeks to possess, woman fundamentally wants to love and to give, moving from sex to love Outline: 0:00 On resonance and attraction. The inter-connected and inter-penetrating nature of all existence. The individual's inherent love and connection to the divine. Love within is reflected through external world, resonating with objects and circumstances. 6:10 The nature of the male sexual drive and its selfish aspects. Men and women are fundamentally different, with men driven by a desire to possess and women driven by a desire to love and to give. The two drives and its consequence. The sexual drive is the main impediment to realizing one's true nature and source of love. 12:02 Emotion and evolution. Civilization is a protection of self, leading to selfishness and hardness. Overcoming emotion is necessary for the evolution of man and woman on Earth. 20:52 Woman and sexuality. Woman is the only hope of stopping men's sexual drive. Woman must know what she wants - sex or love – can she say no to sex but yes to love? The importance of a woman being sensitive to love and not giving into sexual advances. 27:10 Love, sex, and relationships. On making love without sexual arousal. On prioritizing love over sexual drive in relationships. What happens when lovers first meet and why love goes out of the relationship. On compromise. Woman is fundamentally a 100% love and man is 90% love with 10% something to do. Extracts: We've got to get this – that the external world is there as a reflection – as a reflector of what we are. Often, you can say the other thing – that the external world reflects as circumstances – it reflects what we are or what is necessary for us to cope with. When you love an object – this is what this external world is for – you reflect off that object; and your love reflects off that object. It doesn't reflect off this one or that one or that one; it somehow or the other resonates with that particular object. You resonate with that particular object. And there is a correspondence between the two. All love fundamentally is the love of That – the love of God, the love of It – That which is behind everything, behind all existence. All love is that. You have that love inside of you because you came out of that place, that vastness, into conception in some woman's womb. You came out of that place. And to that place, your consciousness and intelligence will return. So, you have that love inside of you, where there are no problems, where there is no movement, where there are no bodies, where there is no necessity for separation, because all is one, although you have an individual consciousness, you cannot separate the part from the whole. The part which is the individual consciousness is the part of the whole and, therefore, cannot be separated from it. Woman is a totally different creature to man. Woman's desire is not to possess – in her immediacy, her love is to give – her love is to give and to please man. Her desire is to give everything to him – to be able to open up completely and utterly to the male principle – that's what love is. Woman is the hope of it all – of stopping man, and how does she do this? She's got to know – 'What do I want,' 'Do I want sex or do I want love?' That's the fundamental question that's coming at you, woman. Support the show All content © The Barry Long Trust

Love is not a condition (short)

11/11/2023
Transcript: Now, I'd like to make it clear to the people with me that emotions are always negative or excitement. I want to make it clear that joy is not an emotion because the world thinks that joy, beauty and love are emotions – and they are not. Joy is in me. Joy arises from the place of stillness in me. If you emotionalise joy, you come up into the subconscious where you want to make an impression on somebody or communicate, whereas joy just rises, and it can be there now without any emotionalising. Love is never an emotion. An emotional person, in the moment of their emotions, cannot be a lover – cannot be love – because love does not project itself as emotion. Love is a state – like joy is a state – like sweetness is a state – like beauty is a state – and this state is within. And it's just there. Whereas emotion is always out – "e" meaning out, "motion" meaning movement – emotion is always trying to go out. It tries to make a point; it tries to hit back. "You're mine," it says. "You're no good," it says. "I resent what you've done to me," it says. "You must understand me," it says. This is all emotion. Love says, "What do you want?" or "What can I do for you?" or "I love you." If I say "I love you," that's the end of it. What do I mean by "I love you?" I am patient with you. I hold nothing against you. I don't hold any of the past against you. I don't accuse you of anything, and I don't blame you. Love says it all in that one word. You don't have to say other words. That's the beginning of the end – "I love you." The way we use love mostly is, "I want you." Want is an emotion. If "I love you", it follows that it is good to be with you. But I can't want you. Not in love. Because it is not necessary. Because if I love you – what is the good of loving you if you don't love me? If you don't want to be with me? What's the good of me loving you if you don't love me or want to be with me? That would be to put a lack of freedom on you. Because surely if I love you and you don't love me, I don't want you to be with me because that would cause you to be emotional and unhappy. So, do you want to hold anyone that doesn't want to be with you? If you do, then you want to keep someone prisoner. You won't be happy, and they won't be happy. So – what's the point? It all comes from emotion. Love says – "well, I don't want you to leave because I love you, but if you've got to go, you've got to go; if you don't love enough to stay, then I can't hold you because that would be holding on to something." If I hold on to something when I go into me (in meditation,) I say, "Come on, let go, don't hold on." Love is not holding on. Whereas our whole society teaches us – that love is a holding on. So everything (out there) is reversed, really. Love is not an emotion. Joy is not an emotion. They are both states which are immediately there now. A state is not a condition. Emotion is conditional – "I am angry" because of that condition – "I am jealous because of you." "I am resentful because of what you have done to me." All these are conditions. Whereas "I love you" does not have a condition on it. "If you want to be with me, that's lovely – but if you don't want to be with me, well, what's the point if you don't love me?" "I love you –" it's not a condition you see. Joy – can anyone take my joy from me? Because my joy is within me. Nobody can take my joy from me. They can take other things from me, which are material and objective, and that might disturb me to some degree, but it would not take my joy – my joy of life. Nobody can take my joy of life from me. So, the point is love and joy are states, not conditions. Support the show All content © The Barry Long Trust
