We conclude what was perhaps the most important series ever on our podcast. In this episode we conclude both our Malachi series and understand the book of Malachi for what it truly is, the hinge of the Canon of Scripture. The bridge between Old and New, between Israel and the Church, between the Genesis of all things and the Revelation of He is who Alpha and Omega - beginning and end - God's design, His patterns, His solutions. HIS written WORD is like the Living Word Himself, infinite and unchanging. Perfect in every way! What an honor, responsibility and delight it has been in these two series to follow Malachi's thread through God's work with you! This study has been fundamentally life-changing for me (John), and I pray it will have the same impact for you. May our Lord Jesus Christ be lifted up! An explanation is in order. This is our first Christian Atheist since June 1st of this year. Why the gap? Jenny and I have been working for Creation Evolution Headlines (Crev.com) and its founder/editor, David Coppedge. We have been writing articles and producing video content - shorts/reels - to promote the ministry (check us out here: https://www.youtube.com/@CrevInfo). What an honor it has been for us to serve the Lord Jesus under David's patient and godly mentorship! He is a towering figure in the Creation/Evolution debate, and a truly faithful servant of our Lord Jesus Christ. We have learned a great deal from and with him! We have also been very busy. Taking advantage of a lull in the action, I decided to at least finish our Malachi series. This episode and our concluding one to follow (already drafted) accomplish that goal. What an honor, responsibility and delight it has been in these two series to follow Malachi's thread through God's work with you! Following our 3-part "parenthetical" on idolatry, we return to our primary series on the Hebrew word, malaki (in distinction from the book that bears this name). In episode 1 we encountered the very first instance of Malaki, My Angel, in the Bible. It was on Mount Sinai after God had delivered the law, proclaimed and ratified the covenant with Israel. He then promised to send His Angel with them to the promised land, where He would drive out the inhabitants before them if they would simply listen to His voice and obey. It was clear that this angel is the preincarnate Lord Jesus, and that this was his formal introduction to the people. In episode 2 we approached the second appearance of Malaki in scripture, and in this episode we confront it. Like so much of the history of God's chosen people, it is a tragic story of failure with hope attached to it. The failure to listen to and obey the Word of God has the inevitable consequences of separation from God. We explore that theme in this episode. We pause our series on "malaki" to present the important context of Israel's idolatry at the foot of Sinai in the incident of the golden calf. As Jenny and I studied this issue over the past several months we began to understand something important that has ramifications for both the Old and New Testament scripture, and all of Christian history and practice ever since. While in this episode we point to a form of human idolatry in its grosser aspects, we fear that the same sort of idolatry pervades today's evangelical churches in a more subtle manner. It seems to Jenny and I that instead of studying the Bible ourselves, many evangelicals become involved in religious fads that promote evangelical "superstars," teachers whose books become all the rage. Then, instead of studying the Bible, we study their books on the Bible. As an academic, this is the distinguishing between primary material - the Bible, and secondary material - books about the Bible. We should be doing much less of the latter, and much more of the former. The Bible is every Christian's primary source material. Like the Bereans, we must make it our priority, our authority, our delight in learning from God directly from His own voice. And this includes podcast, like ours. We begin a personal history of the revolution in my thinking from evolution to special creation spurred by the evidence of microbiology. Vital to this history is a text by geologist Allan G. Krill, FIXISTS VS. MOBILISTS IN THE GEOLOGY CONTEST OF THE CENTURY, 1844-1969. In this delightful book, Dr. Krill recounts the history of Alfred Wegener's theory of continental drift, that was first ridiculed, then attacked, and finally accepted some 50 years after it was proposed.
