Episode 15: Justin Smoak

3/13/2024
Fresh off a turkey hunt and a round of golf in retirement, former Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Justin Smoak joins the show to reminisce about an 11-year career that featured stops in Texas, Seattle and a memorable five seasons north of the border. Included in his Jays run is a pair of ALCS appearances and a career-best 38-homer campaign in 2017 that saw him start the Midsummer Classic in Miami. In addition to some Josh Donaldson and David Price stories, Smoak talks about the 2015 club that was known for its chirpy personalities and a second half run that came up just short of the franchise’s first World Series appearance since 1993. Enjoy the conversation with the laid back South Carolina native. —— EP15 is sponsored by Lessard Coutu Jewellery. Episode 14: Erik Swanson

3/7/2024
Baseball season is back and to kick things off we sit down in Dunedin with Toronto Blue Jays reliever Erik Swanson on the windiest day possible to go over the ins and outs of the 30-year-old high-leverage reliever’s career. From growing up and living in a place made movie famous — Fargo, North Dakota, don’t yah know? — to being traded three times early in his career, Swanson goes over his journey from eighth-round pick of the Texas Rangers, the trade that sent him to the Big Apple in exchange for Carlos Beltran, then a trip to Seattle in exchange for James Paxton, and, finally, the deal for Teoscar Hernandez that landed him in Toronto. During that winding road a lot happened — Swanson transitioned from starting pitcher to the bullpen, learned a new, elite pitch that has carried his success, and even had some thoughts about a career outside of baseball when things weren’t going well. Enjoy the conversation with a man now known for his devastating splitter! —— EP14 is sponsored by Lessard Coutu Jewellery. Episode 13: Chad Pinder & Marc Strickland

1/31/2024
A chance encounter at the 2023 MLB winter meetings in Nashville led to our first guest’s SMS appearance, as former Oakland A’s utilityman Chad Pinder starts his metamorphosis from baseball player to mental health advocate. At the age of 31, Pinder walked away from the sport in 2023, deciding to call it a career for very personal reasons. A candid Pinder talks about how anxiety affected him personally as a baseball player, the work he put in to change his mindset, and what ultimately led to his early retirement. —— A person Pinder is very familiar with on both a professional and personal level, our second guest is Arizona-based sports psychologist Marc Strickland, who spent time working with both the Chicago Cubs and Oakland A’s before moving into private practice. Strickland talks about what the best athletes do better than anyone else, how his line of work has changed in sports over the last 15 years, and what kind of edge mental performance can give athletes at the highest levels of their craft. Are closers born or bred? How does anxiety manifest in athletes? What warning signs can parents look for in their own kids playing sports? Strickland shed a whole lot of light on his profession and how the brain of an elite athlete works. Thanks to both of these gentlemen for their precious time and enjoy the conversations. —— EP13 is sponsored by Lessard Coutu Jewellery. Episode 12: Tyler Black & Spencer Horwitz

1/24/2024
We are back for the first episode of 2024 and it’s a prospects-heavy edition. Toronto’s own Tyler Black joins the show fresh off a batting practice session thrown by his broadcaster father, Rod, and ahead of a huge spring training for the Milwaukee Brewers infielder, as heads into camp with a legit chance to crack the opening day roster for the first time in his career. After being selected 33rd overall in 2021, Black talks about his journey from Wright State to the brink of his major-league debut. Black was also the No. 1 prospect on Mitchell’s top 20 Canadian prospects this month, and both that list and the top 50 Blue Jays prospects for 2024 piece that landed last week are dissected. An overlooked prospect at every step of the way, Horwitz gives his take on everything from how he views prospect rankings — he's 15th on this year's list — to book recommendations to his take on what's happening in Israel as a proud member of the Jewish community and a part of Team Israel at last year's World Baseball Classic. ———— EP12 is sponsored by Lessard Coutu Jewellery and Sticky Nuggz Inc. Mace goes over his three years in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, his time as a player in the CFL, an abrupt retirement, and then a quick ascension in the coaching ranks, all leading to where he is today heading his first head coaching gig. Episode 9: Jay Onrait & Shawn Lemon

11/24/2023
Our first guest needs no introduction as Jay Onrait is — in the opinion of The SMS — the funniest man on television. Jay joins the show to talk about a career that’s 25-plus years and still going strong. Everything from the origin of Jay and Dan to his run at Fox Sports 1 is touched on, and Jay pulls back the curtain on how a midnight sports anchor spends his evening preparing for a live show. The legend spends a full hour with us on location, so enjoy. You know where to find him already on social media. ———— Shawn Lemon is a future CFL Hall of Famer and just became the 13th player in league history to record 100-plus sacks in his career. In addition to a Grey Cup prediction that came true for his Montreal Alouettes, giving him his third ring, Lemon goes over the trials and tribulations of trying to make NFL teams and make a living in one of the most cutthroat sports around. ———— We welcome a new title sponsor on Episode 8 of The SMS! Episode 8: Steve Phillips & Gregor Chisholm

11/10/2023
It’s about time we finally got MLB insider Steve Phillips on the show and there’s no better time than November right around the yearly top 50 free agents project. Link to top 50: https://www.tsn.ca/mlb/tsn-s-top-50-mlb-free-agents-of-2023-1.2032354 Now 60, Phillips was just 34 years old at the start of his GM tenure, spending parts of seven seasons at the helm of the New York Mets from 1997 to 2003, orchestrating some huge trades, massive signings and making a run to the 2000 World Series, better known as the Subway Series against the cross-town Yankees. From the top 50 list to Bobby Bonilla, the convo is wide-ranging. Follow Steve on X at: https://twitter.com/StevePhillipsGM ———— Our second guest needs no introduction if you’ve followed the Blue Jays media beat over the last decade, as Toronto Star baseball columnist Gregor Chisholm makes his SMS debut. An east coast New Brunswick kid with an affinity for basketball and an extreme distaste for water, Chisholm talks about his career and transition from writing for MLB to his current role at The Star. From there, Chisholm and Mitchell debate all sorts of Blue Jays scenarios for the off-season ahead and the free-agent class is covered over 90+ minutes, the longest interview the SMS has run up thus far through eight episodes. Episode 7: Jordan Romano & Danny Jansen

10/1/2023
Joined by 2x all-star closer Jordan Romano for another fun one, the Markham, Ont., product details his transition from minor-league starter to reliever, a move that changed the course of his career and has led to locking down the 9th inning for his hometown Toronto Blue Jays bullpen. From the time he blew out his elbow on the mound and knew immediately he'd need Tommy John surgery to how his sister became more popular than him on social media to recently starting collecting baseball cards with his brother, the 30-year-old right-hander sits down for a wide-ranging 30 minutes ahead of another postseason run. ———— Our second guest on E7 of The SMS is Romano's batterymate Danny Jansen, who finished with a career-high 17 home runs in 2023, before a broken finger ended his campaign. Unfortunately for Jansen, his career has been consistently marked by his time on the injured list, dating all the way back to his high school days, and that's exactly where the Blue Jays catcher sits as his club heads into the playoffs. An under-the-radar prospect who was overshadowed by the rise of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette, Jansen talks about his slow progression as a raw backstop out of Wisconsin and the simple change that allowed him to take off and reach the big leagues in 2018. ———— Sponsored by Localz Sports Bar and Grill, located in St. Pete, Florida, located a four-minute drive from Tropicana Field at 1 Beach Dr. SE. Episode 6: Davis Schneider & Ross Atkins

9/19/2023
Drafted in the 28th round in 2017, Davis Schneider was mostly an afterthought as a prospect for most of his minor-league career. A breakout 2022 season led to continued success this year, followed by a 25-game MLB debut for the ages. The 24-year-old showed up at Fenway Park out of Triple-A in August and just recently posted the highest-ever OPS through 25 games of a big-league career with a 1.315 mark into September. From finding out he was drafted on social media and not believing it to Toronto Blue Jays fans wearing fake moustaches in honour, Schneider goes over his journey from unknown prospect to key contributor in a playoff race. ———— Now in his eighth season at the helm — tied with J.P. Ricciardi for second-longest tenure as GM in club history behind Pat Gillick — Toronto Blue Jays executive vice president of baseball operations and GM Ross Atkins sits down to chat about his days at Wake Forest during the Tim Duncan era in the 1990s, his five-year minor-league career, and how it all led to a front office role in Cleveland alongside Mark Shapiro. The 50-year-old also goes over some interesting front office moments, including his first trade/free-agent negotiations, arbitration talks with Josh Donaldson when he first became GM in Toronto, and his thoughts on the 2023 season for his ballclub. ———— Sponsored by Localz Sports Bar and Grill, located in St. Pete, Florida, located a four-minute drive from Tropicana Field at 1 Beach Dr. SE. Episode 5: Jay Jackson & Joe Sclafani

9/6/2023
Drafted in 2008 by the Chicago Cubs, South Carolina native Jay Jackson spent years grinding, moving from place to place in search of his big-league dream. It took longer than most, and many give up way before Jackson even considered it. Nine MLB organizations — and many additional stops — later, Jackson is penning a story of fortitude and perseverance in his age-35 season, becoming, at times, a very important part of the 2023 Toronto Blue Jays bullpen. In addition to trying to keep a big-league job, Jackson has also been navigating the premature birth of his son this year, making his story all the more remarkable. You can follow Jackson on X at @Jaxland58. ———— The SMS has featured a lot of long-from conversations that don’t necessarily tackle current events or things going on in Scott Mitchell’s world of daily baseball. This interview will. Joining the show to talk all things Blue Jays prospects and review the soon-to-be-done minor-league season is the club’s director of player development Joe Sclafani. From Ricky Tiedemann all the way down to the bottom of the system in the Dominican Summer League, Mitchell and Sclafani break down some of the key performances in the Jays’ pipeline this year. ———— Sponsored by Localz Sports Bar and Grill, located in St. Pete, Florida, located a four-minute drive from Tropicana Field at 1 Beach Dr. SE.
