Ep. 100: Body Snatchers of Edinburgh
9/10/2025
Send us a text
We explore the notorious tale of body snatchers William Burke and William Hare, who murdered 17 people in 1820s Edinburgh to sell their bodies to medical schools. Their gruesome business emerged from a shortage of legal cadavers when only executed criminals' bodies could be used for dissection.
• Edinburgh was a center for medical science in the 1800s with "operating theaters" designed for students to observe procedures
• Families used creative methods to protect graves including 24-hour surveillance, metal coffins, and protective cages called mortsafes
• Burke and Hare began their crimes opportunistically when a lodger died naturally, then progressed to murder by suffocation
• Their victims were primarily vulnerable people including the elderly, prostitutes, beggars, and people with disabilities
• Dr. Robert Knox purchased all their victims' bodies but escaped prosecution despite suspicions
• After their arrest, Hare testified against Burke in exchange for immunity
• Burke was executed in 1829 and his body was dissected, with his skeleton displayed at Edinburgh University and his skin made into souvenirs
• The murders led to the Anatomy Act of 1832, which expanded the legal supply of cadavers for medical education
If you find yourself in Scotland, visit the Surgeons' Hall Museums or the anatomy collections at the University of Edinburgh to see artifacts from this dark chapter in medical history.

Ep. 83: The Stayner Brothers
4/30/2025
Send us a text
The devastating story of the Stayner family reveals how differently trauma can manifest within the same family, as one brother became a hero for escaping his kidnapper while the other became the notorious Yosemite Park Killer. This tale of kidnapping, heroism, neglect, and murder demonstrates the long-lasting impact of childhood trauma and the critical importance of mental health support.
• Steven Stayner was kidnapped at age 7 and held captive for seven years by Kenneth Parnell
• After Parnell kidnapped 5-year-old Timmy White, Steven heroically escaped with Timmy and brought him to safety
• Steven's return brought media frenzy and national attention, while his brother Carrie faded into the background
• Steven struggled to reintegrate into normal life, facing bullying and turning to substance abuse before establishing a family
• A TV movie about Steven's life called "I Know My First Name is Steven" drew 40 million viewers
• Steven died in a hit-and-run motorcycle accident the night before the Emmy Awards
• Cary Stayner developed mental health issues that went largely untreated
• Working at Cedar Lodge near Yosemite, Cary murdered three tourists in February 1999
• Cary's crimes revealed a pattern of sociopathic behavior, including sexual assault and taunting communications with police
• The Stayner family had a history of intergenerational trauma, including abuse, alcoholism, and mental illness

4/23/2025

We revisit the mysterious disappearance of Maura Murray, diving into new evidence and examining the strange circumstances surrounding her vanishing after a car crash in rural New Hampshire in 2004.
• Maura Murray disappeared after crashing her car on Wild Ammonusic Road in Haverhill, New Hampshire on February 9, 2004
• Before her disappearance, Maura had been involved in several incidents including shoplifting at West Point and credit card fraud at UMass
• She had packed up her dorm room, emailed professors about a non-existent family death, and purchased alcohol before driving north
• Recent fingerprint evidence matches Stephen Baldwin (formerly Finkelstein), a West Point acquaintance now imprisoned for animal cruelty
• Baldwin changed his name months after Maura's disappearance, and his own mother has been missing since 2007
• Despite extensive searches, no trace of Maura has ever been found
• Multiple theories exist: suicide, abduction, voluntary disappearance, or foul play

Ep. 81: Camp Windigo
4/16/2025
Send us a text
We explore the chilling legend of Camp Wendigo in Windsor, Massachusetts, a former children's summer camp with a dark reputation for paranormal activity and a gruesome, though unverified, history of murder. The tale reveals how local legends can evolve from grains of truth and reflect the collective anxieties of a community.
• Founded in 1942 by two Smith College physical education professors on 75 acres of former farmland
• Originally designed as a place for children to learn hands-on farming and outdoor skills
• Named "Wendigo," which refers to a cannibalistic supernatural creature in Native American folklore
• Legendary story claims a camp counselor murdered six young girls and then committed suicide
• No historical evidence supports the murder story, despite extensive searches through town records
• Several young women did go missing or were murdered in the surrounding area in the 1970s-80s
• Demolished in 2015 by the state after years of abandonment and deterioration
• Numerous visitors reported strange experiences including phantom footsteps, mysterious figures, and unexplained phenomena
• Courtney visited in 2011 and got her car stuck, requiring a tow truck and emergency services
• Former campers recall positive memories of caring for animals and enjoying the natural surroundings
If you've heard of Camp Wendigo or have thoughts about it, send us a message on Instagram or Facebook, or text us. We're reaching out to someone who claims to know more verified stories about the camp's history.
