Her life revolves around the church, and she’s known for her strong sense of humor and commitment. For most of us, our phones rarely leave our hands—but according to Professor Colin O’Gara, that everyday habit may be tipping into something more serious. The addiction specialist has warned that harmful phone use could now be affecting up to 20 per cent of people in Ireland, with more and more individuals presenting with issues linked to excessive screen time. Speaking to the Irish Independent, he pointed to a growing pattern of behaviour where smartphones aren’t just tools, but gateways to compulsive use of social media, gaming and even gambling. It’s a shift, he says, that’s starting to have real consequences for people’s mental health—and one Ireland may not be fully prepared to deal with.
