Looking for a FUN adventure for your next vacation? Active Travel Adventures curates multi-day world wide adventure travel holidays for reasonably fit folks who love to hike, bike, paddle or otherwise stay active for a more immersive experience when they vacation and explore our planet and its people. These are all adventures that YOU can do, especially if you train (I'm 64, so if I can do it, so can YOU!). It's easy to find the right adventure for you: We cover mild adventures like cycling (flat) the historic and beautiful Netherlands, to taking an African safari, to taking a walking holiday from one medieval village to the next in Europe. And if you are up for a bigger challenge, then check out climbing Kilimanjaro, trekking to Everest Base Camp or Annapurna in Nepal's majestic Himalayan mountains, or hiking the Mont Blanc circuit through Italy, France and Switzerland. But most adventures we cover are rated a 3 out of 5 for difficulty. Examples include (eBikes available) cycling Greek islands or island hopping from Split to Dubrovnik in Croatia (both while sleeping on a cool ship!), hiking in Banff, the Dolomites, Patagonia, or trekking to Machu Picchu. Long distance hikes we cover include the Coast to Coast and Cotswold Way in England, the West Highland Way in Scotland and other famous UK trails. Of course, we often cover doing an El Camino, including the French Way (Camino Frances), the Portuguese Way, the Primitivo, the original way from Oviedo. We've even BIKED the El Camino! We have also walked the Camino's sister trail, the Kumano Koda trail in Japan. If you like the water and to paddle, we've rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon (and we've hiked the Grand Canyon, too!) as well as through Canyonlands National Park. We've rafted the Middle Fork of the Salmon River, as well as day trips as part of other trips on the Pacuare River in Costa Rica and the Tulley River in Australia. We've also snorkeled the Galapagos Islands and the Great Barrier Reef! Naturally, we cover the amazing National Parks, including Olympic, Acadia, the Grand Canyon, Arches, Zion, Arches, Rocky Mountains and more! Sometimes we even travel on horseback, including in Iceland, Ireland and other exciting destinations! Often the trips are multi-activity, like the ones in New Zealand, Italy, Argentina, Chile, Peru and Costa Rica. On multi-activity trips, we mostly hike, but we usually do some biking and paddling as well. Sometimes we go on expedition cruises, like to Antarctica, the Falkland and South Georgia islands or to Greenland. Here we hike and get to paddle among the icebergs, while traveling on a small ship for closer access to the amazing landscape! On occasion we backpack and camp, but mostly we day hike and stay in comfortable inns at night. We have backpacked St Olav Ways in Norway, the Kungsleden trail in Sweden, in Iceland and Greenland, as well as section hiked the Appalachian Trail, or 'AT'. We visit exotic countries like Bhutan, Vietnam and Thailand. In short, we cover the world's most exciting adventures that regular people can do on their vacation. Sometimes, we cover skills that you need in order to go on an adventure, from traveling solo, how to choose a tour company, how to save money for travel, how to save money ON travel, and outdoor skills you need to learn (also check out our sister podcast, the Adventure Travel Show podcast (ATSP) for deep dives into adventure skills). ATA's mission is to inspire and empower you to lead a bigger life through adventure travel. Travel the Active Travel Adventures way! Be sure to visit the ActiveTravelAdventures.com website where we make it easy to find the right adventure for you! You can search by time of year you can travel, what activity you want to do and which continent you want to visit. Trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal : An Adventure For Regular Hikers (who train!)

5/2/2024
Trek to Everest Base Camp in Nepal : An Adventure For Regular Hikers (who train!) Looking for a superb challenge, surrounded by majestic beauty and a unique culture? Consider trekking to Everest Base Camp(EBC)! You hike on the same path as the folks who are attempting to climb Mount Everest, ending at EBC, the last village before their final climb. It's also the one path that villagers and pack animals use to tranport goods up and down these Himalayan mountains, so you'll also get a fun cultural exchange as well! Today, I interview Jack about his Active Adventures 18 day tour, which starts and ends in colorful Kathmandu in Nepal. You then fly in to the exciting Lukla airport before beginning your trek. Active allows for acclimatization days offering you the best chance of a successful hike up to Everest Base Camp at 17,598’/5364m. You'll even have the option to climb even further later to the ridgetop of Kala Patthar at 18,208’/5550m for one of the most dramatic views in the world! Cross the Hillary Bridge, named after Sir Edmund Hillary, the first along with his porter, summited Mount Everest in 1953. Fly in and out of Lukla, one of the world's most exciting airports:) Try a yak burger (and be sure to stand mountainside when they pass you by on the trail!). We discuss all the important things you need to know before deciding if this is the trip for you. Be sure to visit the webpage for more details and pics. And get the FREE Everest Base Camp Travel Planner as well. If it is, be sure to email me for an exclusive $200 Off Active Adventures Promo Code (they won't let me publish it). You learn what to expect and pack, how to train, what you'll eat and where you'll sleep, how to deal with altitude and hygiene, and most importantly, what you'll see and experience! This adventure is a combo of Type I and Type II Fun (learn what that means, too). This hike, along with climbing Kilimanjaro, are the two most difficult adventure travel trips that will be covered on the Active Travel Adventures podcast, rated at a 5 out of 5. BUT, both are doable for fit folks WHO TRAIN! Costa Rica Camino Long Distance Coast to Coast Hike with Home Stays : Part II

4/18/2024
Guided Costa Rica Camino with Homestays and Daily Luggage Transfer PART II: Join us as we continue our 175 mile/280 km Costa Rica Camino where, over 16 days, you walk from the Caribbean to the Pacific Ocean, across the entire country (indeed the continent and over the continental divide!). You'll experience an array of ecosystems and see wildlife and fauna in one of the most biodiverse regions of the world. The hike is fully guided and includes all meals and daily luggage transfer. When I went, I did a combination of small lodges and camping. Our guest Laurie and her husband opted for a private tour for the two of them and they stayed in homestays, for a completely different experience than the one I covered last year. Less than 1000 hikers have completed the Costa Rica Camino as of this recording! Learn all about it on the show and on the website and Travel Planner. I recommend going with my affiliate, UrriTrek. Use Promo Code ATA100 to save $100 on your full Costa Rica Camino. COMPLETE SHOW NOTES See important links for planning your adventure, photos, videos and more cool info about today’s show. Patagonia Part I: Hike the W Trek in Argentina

3/7/2024
Patagonia Part I: Hike the W Trek in Argentina Patagonia ranks in my Top 3 of the ‘Most Beautiful Places’ I’ve seen (and I’ve been to 50 countries and all seven continents). The rugged granite mountains are often snow capped in glaciers lit up by the sun. Those same glaciers have turned its many lakes into stunning milky blue and teal oasis that defy description. In Patagonia, you can hike one of most beautiful hikes in the world, the W-Trek including the French Valley and Grey Lake. You can also sea kayak around the icebergs and glacier in Grey Lake. On our trip, we also got in some amazing biking when we were over on the Argentinian side after we hiked and checked out the gorgeous Perito Moreno glacier. We spent some time eating and exploring the fun gateway cities of Puerto Morales, Punta Arenas, El Chaltan, and El Calafate. In this Part I, we hike the stunningly beautiful W-Trek in Chile [ 49.7 miles / 80 km · Total Elevation Gain: 8,956 ft / 2,730 ] over the course of four days, all the way to glacial Lake Grey. We stay in refugios, where we also get a hot and tasty breakfast and dinner each night. Learn all about going on an adventure in Patagonia and by listening to today's show and visiting the website. See why you will soon be adding Patagonia to your Bucket List! COMPLETE SHOW NOTES See important links for planning your adventure, photos, videos and more cool info about today’s show. Avoiding Crowds on the El Camino : The First Stages of the French Way

12/7/2023
Avoid Crowds on the El Camino de Compostella There are three ways to avoid the crowds when doing the El Camino: avoid peak season, avoid the busiest routes, avoid the last 100 km into Santiago. Today's guest, David, chose a great way by walking the first two stages of the most popular route, the French Way, but instead of the last 100 km/60 miles like most people, he walked the first two stages over the Pyrenees from Saint Jean Pied de Port to Logrono. While David made many friends among the fellow 'pilgrims' walking the Camino at the same time. it wasn't crowded, even though he walked during the high season in July! Learn about David's adventure on today's show. SAVE!!! David went with ATA affiliate, Follow The Camino. ATA listeners get an exclusive Follow the Camino Promo Discount Code, ATA5, to save 5% off of any Follow the Camino booking (or their sister company, One Foot Abroad for other European walking and biking holidays). You Did It! Listener Stories

9/7/2023
YOU Did It!!! Listener Adventure Stories Today we start a new segment on the show featuring folks like you and me, who got inspired to step outside of their comfort zone and took on an adventure. While in the future, these will be shorter segments added to the regular show, I thought we'd start off with this incredible story of Sally, who thought she was heading for a wheel chair due to multiple injuries from her days as a dancer. Instead, through training, grit, and fortitude, Sally instead headed to the North Island of New Zealand and hiked the challenging Tongariro Crossing! Next, she'll climb Machu Picchu! Adventure travel has COMPLETELY changed she and her husband's life! Like Sally, it took someone (my friend John) encouranging me and who believed in me and convince me that I could, with proper training, that I too could go on an epic adventure. It is my hope that these listener stories will inspire you, too! COMPLETE SHOW NOTES See all the inspirational stories as they are published! Today's episode is a full length interview, but I will be adding shorter snips to this page in the future.
