RITCHIE JAY ALLUM from Studious chats home studio tips, tech, networking, Source Connect and connection of the human kind

7/11/2023
This week, Chloe and Holly sit down for a techy chat with RITCHIE JAY ALLUM of Studious, and get their learn-y hats on. Ritchie's wealth of knowledge and down-to-earth nature makes this ep one to tune into if you're looking for trustworthy advice on all things technical when it comes to VO. First up, even though they said they wouldn't, the ladies get a little chatty about ChatGPT and it's uses in the kitchen (?!) before diving into the interview where they get a bit more of an insight into just who Ritchie is with everyone's favourite NEW segment - Quick Fire You! Then they explore a day in the life of Ritchie, home studio setups, Source Connect and just how to friggin' connect the goddamn thing, choosing the right microphone and then some super insightful life advice as well. It's got it all, folks. We are so grateful to have had Ritchie of STUDIOUS FAME AND GLORY on our humble little poddy, so we thank you for listening and encourage you to always make that extra....evaluation ;) Connect with Ritchie here: Website: studio.us Instagram: @s_t_u_d_i_o_u_s Email: ritchie@studio.us As always, remember to stay up to date with all things CYHM by joining our socials Instagram - @canyouhearme_podcast Facebook Discussion Group - Can You Hear Me Discussion Group

SOUND BITE | is social media worth it, webbed toes, mental health and checking in

6/27/2023
It's sound bite time! (aka time for Holly and Chloe to have a chat). Warning! Some explicit content, so put your ear pods in if little people are around! Much to Chloe's dismay the segment 'One work win, one life win and one moment that made me feel human' is now a WHOLE (reoccurring) episode. If you are scared of foot talk....don't listen BUT if you want to be part of the 'is a social media presence worth it' convo then....TUNE IN. When the ladies finally get on with the episode, they discuss moving back into work after a break, what a 'rolling various' is, self marketing/having a social media presence and being ok with changing your mind regarding employment. DAN BRUMM chats voicing and sound designing for BLUEY, doco narration and the importance of keeping your mind and body healthy

6/13/2023
It's our first interview for 2023 and we are so excited to talk to the one and only Dan Brumm! Dan Brumm is known worldwide as the voice of Uncle Stripe in Bluey..... but we find out in this interview that he is SO MUCH MORE. For over 15 years Dan has been voicing content for Australian and International markets......from TVC and Radio campaigns, to Corporate Narrations and Documentaries, Dan sure knows how to add warmth and a down-to-earth sincerity to any brand. Brummy is based in Brisbane and before launching himself head first into voice-over he was, and still is, a master of sound design. In this interview, Dan and Chloe bond over their shared insights into life with 3 kids and how they are both leaning heavily into time away from alcohol to help them be better parents. Dan takes a walk down memory lane as he meets gorgeous little Charlotte and shares some great memories from when his little people were even smaller. Holly and Chloe ask Dan all about his work on Bluey and he shares the commonalties he and Uncle Stripe have in 'Dadding'... it includes a lot of games where you can lie down haha. Dan shares how he got into sound design, his love of music and the enjoyment that he gets from the narration work he does on Gem Hunters Down Under. If you are keen to try some of the meditations that Dan discusses, look up 'Sam Harris' who has a podcast called 'Making Sense' and a waking up meditation app called "Waking Up" (makes sense! haha). We thoroughly enjoyed learning more about Dan and can't wait to catchup with him in Brissy! HOLLY HAD A BABY | The story of Charlotte's birth

5/30/2023
Have we got an extra special episode for you today? Absolutely! Especially if you're into birth stories, oversharing and lots of detail. Just kidding, it's not that bad. But in today's episode, Holly shares the story of how her beautiful (now 6 month-old) baby girl, Charlotte, came into this world - and how it changed her forever. Becoming a parent has to be one of the most transformational events one can go through. It can be gruelling and challenging and soul-wrenching and magical all at the same time. Today's episode is about bonding through shared experiences and knowing that, no matter what you may be going through, you are never alone. A little message from Holly: "Being completely honest, the last few months have been incredibly challenging. Not only have I been navigating the transition into motherhood, but there have been a number of other life stressors that have popped up along the way. Always the way, right - when it rains, it pours? I felt wonderful recording this episode and sharing this special story with Chloe, and all of our listeners...and then I descended, once again, into a period of low mood, stress, anxiety and great overwhelm. It is at this point that I sought professional help. I have since continued riding the rollercoaster of highs and lows that come with life and parenthood - just with a little more support. When I was in the depths, the last thing I felt like doing was seeking help. Having since done so, I finally feel like I am coming out the other side of this fairly dark period. I guess I just wanted to share that, even though this story is shared with joy and happiness (because Charlotte truly is divine!), I also acknowledge the depth and complexity of this experience and the toll that it, and motherhood, has taken on me. It is not always rainbows and sunshine and unicorns, and if you are struggling right now, you are not alone. I am so lucky and grateful to have such caring loved ones around me who have helped me when my world wasn't quite so bright. Thank you to those people. And thanks to you for listening today." When To Do A Freebie | Knowing your worth and knowing how to communicate it

11/8/2022
We have hit November, can you fucking believe it?! In this week's Sound Bite episode, Chloe and Holly sit down...without a beverage!...(Holly's pregnancy indigestion was REAL that day) and have a chat about when (if ever) to do a "freebie". i.e. A voiceover job free of charge. They chat about some of the mental inconsistencies in personally justifying an 'acting' freebie as being OK, compared to a 'voiceover' freebie. Where does the difference come from? Does everything come down to how you see yourself/your worth placed, in terms of $$? It's definitely a thought-provoker! The ladies dive deeper into some strategies they have used to help communicate their worth, as well as touching briefly on charity work and pay to play sites. What do you think? How would you advocate for yourself? What strategies do you have in place for such situations? Have you got experience with pay to play and other talent sites? Reach out to us with your thoughts, we'd LOVE to hear from you. 7/5/2022
In a CYHM first, the ladies welcome to the poddy, not one but TWO guests this episode! Although they've moved away from the usual style of interviewees...... Chloe and Holly are pretty sure you'll get a lot out of what their guests have to share. To start off the episode and to get 'The Husbands' comfortable in front of the mic they play a round of 2 truths and 1 lie.... we learn that Jesse (Holly's husband) is particularly injury prone and John (Chloe's husband) has had a lot of 'bucket list moments' in his life. 'The Husbands' generously take us all on a walk down memory lane, talking about how they met Holly and Chloe, and get very honest about the pros and cons of living with a 'creative'. We learn about what the boys do for work: ........ and uncover the similarities between, what seem to be, very different types of work. Although 'The Husbands' openly talk about the constant 'self chatter' the ladies indulge in at home, the support these gents have for our incredible Hosts is extremely evident! Thanks for coming on the show Jesse and John, it was a pleasure listening to you get more and more comfortable on the mic as The Pogues Whiskey warmed your bellies and loosened your lips. 6/21/2022
In today's interview, the ladies are heading into the future..... two whole hours into the future.... in their interview with Musical Theatre SUPERSTAR, Stephen Mahy!!!!!!!!! (he is in New Zealand ... thats why it's in the future). Holly starts the episode with a crazy adventure story and Chloe discusses the difference between a 'cancelled hold' and a 'cancelled job' (resulting in a cancellation fee) - whilst she's on a caffeine and pseudoephedrine high, which makes for some interesting storytelling. Then, the lovely Stephen Mahy joins the ladies from across the sea, where they discuss the intricacies of the bubbles in Champagne and Sparkling wine....... all agreeing that Cristal is the most 'exciting' to drink. They quickly move onto the similarities in 'vocal care regimes', adjusting your warm up to suit your mood and how daily cold showers can impact the most important aspect of a solid warm up - the ability the breathe properly! Stephen's long and successful career in Musical Theatre enables him to reflect on the responsibilities of older creatives across the industries, whilst reminding us of how much we can learn from the newer generations coming through the ranks. Having started his career understudying the lead role in Miss Saigon, paving the way for years of Musical Theatre lead roles, Stephen generously shares his gratitude of the many highs his career has awarded him ..... whilst reminding us of the importance to look after, and be open about the state of, your mental health - cue Holly and Stephen nerding out about the Wim Hof Method. SARAH AUBREY chats long term gigs, playfulness in VO and the Power of the Whiteboard

6/7/2022
This week, the girls chat to the wonderful Sarah Aubrey! Sarah is one of Australia’s top voice actors, whose incredibly diverse reads have been heard across many Australian and international campaigns. Holly and Chloe get Sarah's tips on how best to tackle those emotional reads, how to feel comfortable asking for more time and the importance of maintaining playfulness in VO. First up, we hear about Chloe's and Holly's week in - "1 work win, 1 life win and 1 moment that reminded you you were human" (they really need to find a catchier title for that segment). It's only a quick catch-up because both of the girls are eager to share the entertaining interview that follows! This weeks 'Beview' is slightly different due to all three ladies not drinking for a variety of reasons - however Sarah still manages to make mineral water sound exciting! The girls learn about Sarah's time at NIDA, how listening to Lee Perry's demo made her sit up and say 'I could do that!', and the inner angst that rippled through her as she waited to pitch her voice to Brad and Vanessa at Stellar Sound! Sarah generously shares her thoughts on those long term gigs - she was the voice of Channel 7 for fifteen years and has voiced numerous characters on the Red Bull tv campaigns. As well as talking us through how she discovered the 'fun of voices' as a little kid (stay tuned until the very end for a treat from 1983!!), we hear how she became a sponge for accents as her family moved across the UK, and around the world. The ladies get Sarah to say THAT long Welsh word - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, and even have the pleasure of meeting 'Pearl' (tune in to find out who on earth Pearl is).
