493. Sof Puchley “ID EST”

2/10/2025
Happy Monday, Everyone! I'm wishing every a great start to the week and hoping that this interview helps with that. Producer and actor Sof Puchley brought her short film “ID EST” to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024 and took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film - Sci-Fi, as well as earning her director Shayda Frost the Filmmakers Award for Outstanding Director - Sci-Fi. This stunningly beautiful and extremely engaging film was one of my favorites last year, as I’m a huge SciFi fan and love when someone like Sof brings a fresh perspective to the genre. If you’re curious, that’s pronounced “ihd-ehst.” Sof’s creative journey is a bold and courageous one. She has done things in her life, both as a student and professional, that most people I’ve met would not dare to try. But I will not go into it further because you need to listen to the interview. 492. 4Qs with Matt Kic & Mike Sorce

2/7/2025
What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. Writing and directing team Mike Sorce and Matthew Kic presented their incredible short film “Manifesto” in the Sherman Oaks Film Festival 2023 as a World Premiere and took home the Grand Jury Award – Best Screenplay – Short Film, and the Filmmakers Award – Outstanding Short Film – Drama. Wednesday I shared our pretty terrific chat and I'm very excited to follow that up today with their 4 Questions! 491. Matt Kic & Mike Sorce “Manifesto”

2/5/2025
Happy Hump Day , Folks! One thing I’ve been noticing for the last few decades — hey, I first got involved in indie film in the late 90’s — is that scripts with two names on them are almost always better than those with one. No offense to the infinite number of solo writers out there, but I cannot help but notice that the maxim “two minds are better than one” especially applies to screenwriting. It just might apply to film directing as well. Writing and directing team Mike Sorce and Matthew Kic sat down with me at the DIF mic’s and shared the very interesting story of how these two came out to L.A. from Arizona and Texas, ended up in the same mail room, teamed up to write together, and then reached the pinnacle of their careers when the Sherman Oaks Film Festival presented the World Premiere of their short film “Manifesto” in 2023. Mainfesto took home the Grand Jury Award – Best Screenplay – Short Film, and the Filmmakers Award – Outstanding Short Film – Drama. Sarcasm aside, Mike and Matt have accomplished a lot of great things since their arrivals in L.A. and it was an absolute delight to have them onto the podcast to share their stories. 489. Josh Baker & Chevy Knight “Dry”

1/31/2025
A fantastic Friday to Everyone. I'm excited to start the weekend off by sharing this great chat. Josh Baker and Chevy Knight brought their film “Dry” to the Sherman Oaks Film Festival in 2024 and took home the Filmmakers Award forOutstanding Cast Performance - Horror. They produced the film together with Josh writing and directing while Chevy handled a rather challenging role as the lead actor in this dark, authentic film. As you can tell by our conversation I am a big fan of this film. Chevy and Josh each took a very interesting and even unique path into filmmaking. And who knew that this filmmaking duo who made an engaging and unique film about neighbors met as neighbors. I hope that you enjoy listening to this conversation as much as I did having it. Josh and Chevy and not just talented people, they’re good people. Happy Monday, Film Friends! That's right, we are trying on a Mon-Wed-Fri schedule because we have so many exciting talks to share with you all! Brazilian filmmaker Tôka wrote and directed the film “Nauru,” a remarkable film that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Sci-Fi at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2024. In fact, the film took home five awards, including Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Supporting Performer. “Nauru” is a proof of concept for a feature script that Tôka wrote, which is good news because the world he created in “Nauru” deserves to be explored much further. Tôka lives in London today and hopped onto Zoom to have this conversation with me. After seeing a film as well-written and visually stunning as “Nauru,” I had been looking forward to this talk for most of 2024. What are the 4Qs? (1) Three favorite films. (2) An underrated film. (3) An overrated film. (4) A lesser-known film people should seek out. If you listened to Tuesday's episode, you heard my excitement that I got to chat with accomplished filmmaker John Gray, once again. John is a very prolific filmmaker and to date I have seen no fewer than eight of his short films, including Household Demons, Exit Package, Extra Innings, The Third Defector, The Desecrated, The Little Drummer Boy, and The Overlook. We've had the privilege of presenting John's films in numerous festivals over the years, most recently The Unquiet Dead, which was featured at SOFF 2023. It's been a pleasure to get to know more about John over the years, and I'm always eager for his 4 Questions. 485. John Gray – Too Many Films to List!

1/21/2025
Greetings, Film Fans, and a happy Tuesday to you! This may actually be the last Tuesday we post for awhile because we have so may great interviews coming your way, we are going to try on a Monday, Wednesday, Friday schedule release to get those out! The first time I saw one of John Gray’s short films was during Covid lockdown. In fact I saw two of John’s films, “Household Demons” and “Exit Package.” Both took home awards that year; thanks to lockdown we could include both instead of following our rule, “if someone submits two short films, only make one official selection.” But John is a very prolific filmmaker and to date I have seen no fewer than eight of his short films, including The Unquiet Dead, Extra Innings, The Third Defector, The Desecrated, The Little Drummer Boy, and The Overlook. Most year’s it’s a challenge to pick which John Gray film we show in the theater! In addition to being a prolific filmmaker, John is simply a good person. Most of the time we have zoomed for his Q&A’s, as so far he has not been able to make the trip from New York to Los Angeles. Maybe someday! In the meantime, our Zoom Q&A’s have allowed us to have longer talks and I always look forward to them. I knew that John would be an excellent podcast guest and he did not disappoint. In this great chat you get to learn about how he went from a Brooklyn kid who could have taken the wrong path to a screenwriter, a director, a network showrunner, and more. I hope that you enjoy listening to this as much as I enjoyed recording it. 483. Jake Macpherson “Terror Firma”

1/14/2025
Hello to my beloved Discover Indie Film Community. When we had scheduled last week's episodes, we had know idea what tragedy and horrors Los Angeles was about to endure. If you are in LA, I truly hope you are safe and taking care of yourself. And if you're listening I'm guessing you're like me, and connecting with art is a comfort and inspiration in difficult times. I hope this following interview offers that. Writer-Director Jake Macpherson brought his feature length horror film “Terror Firma” to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2024 and the film brought home awards for Best Performer in a Lead Role – Horror, for Faye Tamasa and Best Performer in a Supporting Role – Horror for Burt Thakur. This impressive, innovative film was one of my favorites; I love an indie film that focuses on great ideas and innovative visuals. This film looks great, probably because Jake is as talented as cinematographeras he is a writer and director. Add those skills to a tight story and great performances and you’ve got a winner. I highly recommend that you watch Terror Firma. And if you’re one of those, “I’m not a big horror fan,” people then you should know that this film is much more arthouse than horror. At least that is my opinion! You can check out where to watch Terror Firma here: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/terror-firma. Did everybody listen to my interview with the extraordinary Alina Krasnianska on Tuesday? I truly hope so. Like I said before, Alina's documentary “Culture vs war. Liberov” is easily one of the most important films we've had the privilege of showing at either Film Invasion or The Sherman Oaks Film Festival. It took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Documentary at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2024 and is one documentary of six in the “Culture vs. War” series with a feature length adaptation of the series is on the way. 481. Alina Krasnianska “Culture vs war. Liberov”

1/7/2025
Welcome back, Everybody! I hope 2025 is treating you well so far. My guest on today's podcast is Alina Krasnianska, the Executive Producer of “Culture vs war. Liberov,” a documentary that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Featurette, Documentary at Film Invasion Los Angeles 2024. In this case “home” is Kyiv, Ukraine. The logline for the film is, “A deeply touching story of the war by the eyes of the couple of photographers Kostyantyn and Vlada Liberov.” I sincerely do not have words for how powerful and important this film is. In fact, I wish that every person in the USA would watch it right now. No, I want everyone in the world to see it. And you can... right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgVN6HHIW3k This film is one documentary of six in the “Culture vs. War” series and a feature length adaptation of the series is on the way. I do not feel that I am exaggerating when I say that this film is one of the most important films that has ever played at either Film Invasion Los Angeles or Sherman Oaks film festival. Honestly, I cannot believe how lucky I am that I had the opportunity to talk to Alina for two hours about this film, about the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, and about life in the country that my great grandparents fled in the 1890’s. But even if you have no tie to Ukraine surely any person who believes in human rights, freedom, democracy, and the right to not be murdered in your home by a fascist neighbor will appreciate Alina’s films and hopefully this podcast interview with her. What is truly inspiring is that Alina and her creative partners reacted to the invasion by highlighting the power of Culture to overcome War. There is so much I want to say about this film and Alina, but I will instead just ask you to listen to the interview and WATCH THE FILMS. Alina has shared links with us for the films as well as other important videos, news sources, and Facebook pages. 479. Peter Menchini “When Mama & Me Lived Outside- One Family’s Journey Through Homelessness”

12/31/2024
A Very Happy New Year's Eve to You All! I hope everyone is feeling healthy, rested and peacefully reflective on this past year. One thing that certainly filled my 2024 cup to the brim is all the amazing chats with talented, interesting filmmakers. I'm thrilled to end the last day of this year with one more, and I think it's a great one. Peter Menchini directed the animated short, “When Mama and Me Lived Outside,” that took home the Grand Jury Award for Best Short Film – Animation at Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2023. I referred to this film as an “animated documentary” and Peter agreed. This unique, compelling and meaningful film tells the story of Tiny Gray-Garcia’s children’s book of the same name, utilizing the artwork in creative and original ways to support the story. We had a wonderful screening of “When Mama and Me Lived Outside” at FILA 2023 that included a great Q&A with Peter and Tiny. I knew that it would be a wonderful and rewarding interview if or when Peter had time to do the podcast. Much to my delight we were able to record a Zoom interview and Peter did not disappoint, as the conversation is fantastic and, to me, particularly meaningful. Peter shared the following links: Anyone who wants to buy Tiny's book, and you SHOULD, can do so here: https://www.poorpress.net/ You can learn more if you visit Poor Magazine’s website: https://www.poormagazine.org/ And, finally, Peter shared this fun video with us: https://vimeo.com/270538513. A happy Tuesday to you all! How are we already a week away from the Holidays? Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, all or none of the above, I hope you're taking time for yourself. Especially if that rejuvenating alone time means listening to this week's episode! Jim Vendiola brought his short film “Pretty Pickle” to Film Invasion Los Angeles in 2023 and took home the award for Outstanding Screenplay – Horror. In my opinion this brilliant film deserves way more recognition for its originality and arthouse aesthetic. Not to say that the FILA jury got it wrong; the story of “Pretty Pickle” is wonderfully original while also feeling remarkably authentic. Chicago-based Jim hopped onto Zoom to chat with me. We had done his festival Q&A the same way. I secretly prefer those Q&A’s where there no strict time limit and no pesky audience asking their own questions.
