In 1990, He worked as a paramedic in down state Illinois for three years before being hired on a suburban department outside of Chicago. Then in 2000 he was hired by the Chicago Fire Department where he spent the first 7 years on a West Side engine. He then transferred for 5 years to Squad 2. Then several years between a South Side engine and truck, before his remaining years as a relieving lieutenant. He has worked in Engine 113, Engine 107, and Engine 93. GETTIN’ SALTY EXPERIENCE PODCAST Ep.223 : Tonight Thursday Oct 3rd at 8pm on our Youtube Channel. Our special guest will be 30 year FDNY Lt. Mickey Kross. He worked with the NYPD from 1968-71 and then the NYC Transit Authority from 1971-1976. Joined FDNY and Assigned to Engine 81 in 1977 Transferred to 24 Truck in 1981 Promoted to Lieutenant in 1996 and assigned to Engine 16 Retired in 2006. On 9/11, Lieutenant Kross was doing paperwork at FDNY Engine Company 16 firehouse when his company received the order to dispatch to the World Trade Center. He reported to the North Tower’s 23rd floor. Upon orders to evacuate, he was descending stairwell B when the building collapsed. Lt. Kross curled his body into a corner of the stairwell. A few hours later, sheltered by the stairway, he and 11 other members of the FDNY, a PAPD officer, and one civilian emerged relatively unscathed into a landscape of twisted steel and rubble. Following two years of active duty in the U.S. Naval Submarine Service, He went to proby school in May 1970. He was assigned to Ladder Company 42 in the South Bronx, where he spent spend over 15 years as a firefighter and also became the company delegate to the Uniformed Firefighters Association (UFA). For those who never had the pleasure of meeting or hearing of Andy's work, know this: Andy was a nationally recognized gifted instructor and author who made a tremendous impact in the fire service. Andy was co-author of the FDNY’s Engine Company Operations Manual. He was a New York State-certified fire instructor‚ an instructor for the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs‚ an adjunct lecturer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice‚ and taught at fire service training meetings across the country. The father of two had bachelor’s degrees in political science‚ and public safety and fire science‚ and a master’s degree in fire protection management. Most importantly, Andy was a kind and humorous man, a friend to many, and a devoted husband and father. Andy left us with a wealth of knowledge. He touched many across the country through his articles, hands-on training, lectures, and videos. His no-nonsense, back-to-basics approach to combating today's complicated and dangerous fires brought with it a strong following. The firefighters who were blessed to witness his instruction have an obligation to carry on his work. In 1969 he became a charter member of Ladder 17-2 when it was formed. In 1972 he transferred back to Ladder 33. He unfortunately had to retire from the FDNY in 1978 due to a LOD injury. He was a member of the following departments through the years...Mount Vernon FD New York, Lansing FD North Carolina, Pond Mountain FD North Carolina, Mount Pleasant FD, North Carolina, North Carolina Forest Service, and Ashe County Honor Guard, North Carolina. Our special guest will be 29 year FDNY veteran Lt. Mike Roy. Mike is a 3rd generation FDNY fireman. His Grandfather worked in 1937 at Engine 47 and later Engine 89. His Father in 1963 at Engine 96. He joined the FDNY in July 1987 and was assigned to Ladder 1 in Manhattan. In 1991 he transferred to Squad 41. He then after working at the 1996 Olympics with the NYTF1 FEMA team transferred to Rescue 4. He worked there until his promotion to Lieutenant in Oct 2000. He was a Rescue team Manager for the SOC operation at the WTC for the first 3 weeks after 9/11. He transferred to Squad 61 in April 2002 until his retirement in 2006. We will get the whole skinny. He worked there until his promotion to Fire Marshall in may 1984. He retired in 1989. I am sure he hasn't seen any fire. I had the privilege to work with his son Mike in Engine 290. Our special guest will be 30 year VA and FDNY veteran FF Joel Kanasky. He was a volunteer from 1985 thru 2015. He started out as a USMC firefighter from 1982 to 1985. He Joined the Alexandria VA in 1985 and worked there until 1994. He joined the FDNY in 1994 and was assigned to Tower Ladder 17. He transferred to Rescue 1 in 1998 and worked there until his retirement in 2014. As you can imagine he has been involved with some incredible and unique rescues and fires over the years throughout his career but especially in Manhattan. We will get the whole skinny.
