Description:

I'm Sarah Weiler, TEDx Speaker, coach and creative multi-passionate. I'm fascinated by how we navigate quitting and the uncomfortable feeling that come up when we entertain bringing things to a close. In this podcast… I’ll talk to entrepreneurs, ex-politicians, athletes and PhD students who all have one thing in common – they all at some point wanted to quit the thing they cared about. They’ll share how they made the decision and impart wisdom for others in similar situations. We’ll hear from experts about their take on quitting through the lens of intuition, natural cycles and start-up ideation. And I’ll be coaching people LIVE on their current quitting issues and guiding them to either make a decision, or embrace the uncomfortable uncertainty… This is the podcast for anyone who has ever wanted to quit and not known what to do - I hope you'll find solace, permission, relief and in seeing yourself in others' stories. I believe that quitting is a skill that we can understand better and even master. If we allow it, quitting really is the facilitator of joy. S3 E10 - A Public Journey of Stepping Back as CEO with Zahra Davidson

12/16/2024
Today, I'm speaking to the wonderful Zahra Davidson about her process of letting go of being CEO of her organisation, Huddlecraft. Zahra spent 8 years founding and developing Huddlecraft, a social enterprise specialising in peer-to-peer learning, action and change. In spring this year Zahra stepped back after a 15 month transition process, handing over navigation of Huddlecraft to Dan Ford and Anna Garlands. Zahra has been sharing her letting go journey with me via voice notes, and we've shared this journey publicly through a Substack series called 'Snakeskin' (link at bottom). Zahra continues to support Huddlecraft as a non exec director and associate, and is currently working independently with the Collective Imagination Practice Community, Thirty Percy Foundation, the Transformational Governance Collective and the Many-to-Many Governance Learning Network. Zahra’s work asks how people can be more than the sum of their parts, together. At the end you'll hear a voice note from a few week's after the recording, with a final update. Thanks again, Jude for allowing us into your process. Dr Jude Galea is an A+E doctor of 20 years, the founder of the Witchy Women platform, and host the of the podcast Dr Body Mind Soul, both of which help people inform themselves about alternative therapies away from western medicine. S3 E4 - Knowing when to quit the medical profession with Dr Jude Galea (Part 1)

5/12/2023
I am so excited about today's episode, which is part 1 of a 2 part series with Dr Jude Galea - she's an A+E doctor of 20 years, the founder of the Witchy Women platform - and host the of the podcast Dr Body Mind Soul, both of which help people inform themselves about alternative therapies away from western medicine. Jude is changing the conversation about medicine and is in the process going through a big personal transformation with her identity as a doctor. The episode you're going to hear today was recorded exactly a year ago in May 2022 when Jude was taking a break from being an A+E doctor and living in Mexico, setting up her business. At this point a year ago she's very much still weighing up whether she should leave the medical profession and can see pros and cons for both leaving and staying. In next week's episode we will see where she has got to one year on in terms of the decision to leave. The process of putting these two episodes side by side really highlights to me just how hard the decision to quit can be. It's rarely an overnight decision, it's complex and it can take a lot of processing. Thank you, Jude for sharing your story and allowing us to accompany you in your exploration of what it means for you to quit or remain in the medical profession. I know Jude is sharing this episode on her podcast too, so if you're listening there. Welcome to this very special two part episode of Knowing When to Quit. In this episode we discuss: 🩺 Jude's relationship with being 'a doctor' and why she decided to be a doctor in the first place 🛑 When she first wanted to quit medicine 🥳 What medicine HAS given her over the years and why she's stayed 🧙‍♀️Jude's exploration of alternative therapies and what she's doing to change the narrative 💜 What we mean by 'healing' and how the body works naturally 🌱 Jude's experience with plant medicine and how it's informed her decision to leave Jude's instagram: @dr.bodymindsoul Jude's website: drbodymindsoul.com Jude's podcast: Dr Body Mind Soul -https://open.spotify.com/show/21GjmriufmyDNg0BRUasXp?si=3dd97665af5b4caa Knowing When to Quit - Instagram - @knowingwhentoquit Podcast homepage - www.sarahweiler.com/podcast/ Sarah's newsletter: https://sarahweiler.substack.com/ Editor - Johnny Hall / Music - Sarah Weiler / Artwork - Tom Pauling This was recorded in May 2022 over Zoom WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? S3 E3 - Selina Barker on quitting a double book deal and designing a life she loves

5/2/2023
Today's show I have the wonderful Selina Barker - life design and career change coach, the author of Burnt Out, and founder of 'Project You' and the Hello 2023 Goodbye 2022 journal series. Selina was my entry point into designing a life I loved when I took her course back in 2013, and so it was a wonderful full circle to have her on the pod today. In this episode we discuss: 🔥How we sometimes have to quit the big dream we've had for our careers 💜 Why quitting is a really important part of designing a life we love 😴 The importance of taking a proper break between projects (inspired by her 7 year old son!) ☕️ Why everyone thinks they want to work in a café (or be a potter) 📚 The reality of getting a book published - the highs and lows ✍️ Why Selina ended up self-publishing and advice for wannabe authors Listen out at the end for a free guide that you can download, which I am happy to say was inspired by this conversation about whether to wait for a publisher. Selina said 'why wait for a book deal when I can enjoy writing it now and can share it straight away. And I have LOVED the process.' S3 E2 - LIVE COACHING: I want to feel valued in teaching (Emily)

4/21/2023
Emily is a secondary school teacher in Yorkshire and when we met a few months ago she was really grappling with whether to stay in the profession. She was exhausted from the workload, the children and the families and was wondering if this was the right job for her. As many of you know, I also started my career in teaching and have recently returned to education to coach teachers. In this episode you'll listen to a coaching session between me and Emily where we explore what she wants out of a job and whether she can really be her authentic self in the classroom. I'm really grateful to Emily for allowing listeners a chance to listen to this conversation. For some context this was the first time we'd had a coaching session together, but we had had two conversations beforehand. The coaching style I use is mainly based on the Co-Active Model and the coaching session is unedited apart from a few pauses that we have shortened for brevity. 3/23/2023
Today is a biggie. Have you ever changed your life so much that you feel like you're completely starting over again? Today's guest, Rob Grundel has done just that. After 12 years of living in London and building a life there, Rob said goodbye to the people, communities and projects he'd built and returned to Australia with his family. He is now living in Australia with his family and is currently a principal at business storytelling community Anecdote. Shortly after returning home to Oz he also decided to quit the church he was part of. Stripped back from all of his identities, Rob is now asking himself 'who am I now?' And 'is there a way I don't have to identify quite so deeply with the things I create in the future?' This is an incredibly powerful episode, which will get everyone wondering, who would I be without all the things in my life? For anyone who's ever found themselves starting again, this is for you. S2 E5 - How to keep going with the things that really matter to you - with Robbie Swale

2/1/2023
The place you feel the most resistance is the most important place for your soul's evolution... In today's episode we look at the other side of quitting: NOT quitting. Whenever we start a new project, habit or venture there is a part of us that is screaming to give up. How do we know if this is fear talking or a voice we should listen to? How do we keep going even if we're feeling a lot of resistance? What if we don't feel like we are a real (insert word) writer/creative/musician/poet yet? My guest today, Robbie Swale, developed a simple, 12-minute a week, writing habit over 6 years, which has ended up changing his life. In this episode he'll share what he's learned from this process and how you can get started too. Robbie Swale is a leadership coach, author and podcaster whose work focuses on creativity, leading with honour and the craft of coaching. He is the host of two podcasts – The Coach’s Journey Podcast and The 12-Minute Method Podcast – and the author of The 12-Minute Method series of books, including How to Start When You’re Stuck and How to Create the Conditions for Great Work. Knowing when to quit the idea of having children

1/20/2023
Ooof! This is a big topic today, and one we've been wanting to put out for a while. Between our mid 30s and mid 40s most women are preoccupied with a big decision - whether or not to have children. The decision is complicated: while it's partly in our hands, it's also, in many ways totally not. We wanted to have a frank discussion about what it means to be in this time of deliberation, how we personally navigate the uncertainty, and the opportunity we have to build a new narrative for childfree women. In this podcast we discuss: Both our current (but ever-changing) perspectives on whether we want to have children What the benefits could be of not having children What we've learned from older women who are child free The danger of the panic years Whether it's as simple as family vs freedom, or if it's more nuanced than that Should we all be mothers anyway? Whether men have a ticking clock Towards a more open idea of what family can mean Thank you for listening. Please share this episode with anyone who you think it would resonate with! S2 E3 - Knowing When To Quit being ''Totally Fine'' with Tiffany Phillipou

12/20/2022
TW: suicide and grief In 2008 Tiffany Philippou returned to university, having lost her boyfriend to suicide over the summer. For the next decade she kept herself busy with work, love and London - anything to take her mind off facing her grief. Now, 14 years on, she's written a memoir documenting her 20s and the journey she went on to stop pretending that things were 'totally fine.' It's brave, raw and honest and a reminder for anyone grieving that it's okay to ask for help. In this final episode of 2022 we discuss: ⛑ What did mental health support look like in 2008? 💊 What Tiffany did to try and numb the grief. 🗣 The importance of talking about things to reduce the shame. 📖 The process of writing a memoir including calling up people from your past to tell them you've written about them! 🫀 We also discuss quitting more generally including knowing when to quit a relationship, listening to doubts and knowing the difference between 'this is just hard' and 'I know in my bones this is not right.' 🚀 I share the framework I use to decide if a quitting decision is based on flight, fight or freeze. 😐 We discuss if anyone has ever regretted quitting and whether the desire to quit should always be trusted? S2 E2 - What can ADHD teach us about Quitting? w/Matthew Bellringer

12/9/2022
What can ADHD teach us about Knowing When to Quit? Today's guest Matthew Bellringer has some ideas... Matthew is a divergent innovation guide, neurodiversity advocate and social entrepreneur. They believe that with the right support, unconventional people can make a unique contribution to addressing big, messy problems that affect everyone. Working with (mostly) neurodivergent professionals, academics, and entrepreneurs, Matthew helps establish original approaches to complex issues. They also work with organisations to create the kind of spaces which support this work. In this episode we explore: 🧐 Why having a short attention span can be a good thing 👨🏻‍⚕️ Matthew's journey with ADHD and Dyslexia diagnoses 🎢 The difference between appetite for risk and appetite for uncertainty 🤹🏻‍♀️ How Matthew realises it's time to move away from a hobby and what they do to honour the completion 😩 How to know where to start when you're feeling overwhelmed with options 👎🏽 The stigma around being a generalist 👯‍♀️ How the desire quit plays out when they're working with others Matthew's website: matthewbellringer.com Find Matthew on Linked in: https://www.linkedin.com/in/matthew-bellringer/ Matthew's podcast: https://www.matthewbellringer.com/delightful-dissent Navigating Neurodiversity, for people exploring and figuring out what to do with diagnosis, before and after: https://iaq.matthewbellringer.com/notes/wkfywxei831rn1ncukspxjc/ and its counterpart for those supporting a neurodivergent person personally or professionally, Supporting Neurodiversity: https://iaq.matthewbellringer.com/notes/89tai34f8kpwdcj4zbp5oo3/ Matthew as a speaker/writer - https://iaq.matthewbellringer.com/notes/fwbn4nd6nooqxdqcewd2o1i/ Knowing When to Quit - Instagram - @knowingwhentoquit Podcast homepage - www.sarahweiler.com/podcast/ Editor - Johnny Hall / Music - Sarah Weiler / Artwork - Tom Pauling This was recorded in April 2022 WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? S2 E1 - Samantha Moyo on trusting the fertile void, non-binary thinking, and reimagining the way we do business

10/31/2022
''When we think nothing is happening, A LOT is happening.''- Sam Moyo Welcome to SERIES 2 of Knowing When to Quit! We're so excited to have you back here. This week I'm speaking to Samantha Moyo: Founder of Morning Gloryville (MGV), Creative Coach and Consultant, and as of this summer Shambala Festival's favourite cowgirl. If you don't know MGV, it was a revolutionary sober rave movement, which got people up at 6am to dance to the likes of Fatboy Slim before work. It had huge success all over the globe, and yet, there will always be moments in a start-up's story where the founder asks, 'is this still working for me?' In this honest interview, Sam shares what led her to want to move away from MGV; how the abrupt end shed light on the outdated systems in place; and how she's determined to make sure the world of business changes for the better. In this conversation we discuss: 🏡 Non-binary thinking, not just in gender and sexuality but in where we choose to live 🧘🏽‍♀️The importance of sitting in the fertile void in order for an idea to emerge 🔮 Being a futurist and how it comes from sensitivity ❤️ The changes Sam wanted to see in the world when she set up MGV 🚺 Menstruation in the workplace - what is changing and where we still have work to do 🔥 How the difficult end to MGV revealed the truth about the systemic change that needs to happen in business, and what it's fuelled in her since 🌳 The things that helped Sam get through her post-MGV time Please note there is swearing on this episode, in case you are playing it in front of littles :) Sam's website - https://www.samanthamoyo.co.uk/ Sam's IG - @mysticmoyo Knowing When to Quit - Instagram - @knowingwhentoquit Podcast homepage - www.sarahweiler.com/podcast/ Editor - Johnny Hall / Music - Sarah Weiler / Artwork - Tom Pauling This was recorded in October 2022 in person WANT TO SUPPORT THIS PODCAST? Giving our Projects a Beautiful Ending - End of S1 Reflections Part 3

9/21/2022
Hello! Welcome back. In between Series 1 and 2 I've taken some time to reflect on my own journey with Quitting since the podcast began in November 2020. In Part 1 I looked at the podcast itself and use the Quitting Quadrantl® Framework to map my journey from Beginners' Flow, to Midway Burnout... In Part 2 I reflected on two big life changes that I was committed to starting in 2021 but that in the end I didn't go through with. In Part 3 I talk about 'Beautiful Endings' and the importance of ending projects with grace and celebration in order to honour what has been created. I share the experience of closing my comedy night after 7 years, and of reimagining my fortnightly Moon Group.
