Turning the lights on - a history of EPT, migration and modernising Australia with Matthew Quomi

11/27/2023
In this episode we stop a moment to think about how we are so connected to electricity. We’re going to honour the courageous and skillful men who climbed heights without fear to assemble and construct those tall steel structures which look like mini Eiffel Towers across our Australian landscape. We’re going to step back in time to 1951 when the Australian branch of an Italian company set up in Australia to connect our vast, remote country to a reliable electricity source which enables a future of possibility and prosperity. Electric Power Transmission Pty Ltd or EPT - was that company. EPT holds an important chapter in Australia’s story. The story of migrants making their way in a new land. The story of connecting Australia across a remarkable and unforgiving landscape. The story of powering Australia into prosperity – signalling the start of industry, new jobs and new economic opportunities. The EPT story brought the 1956 Olympics to our TV screens, it linked Carnarvon to the NASA space program and it was a pioneer of WA’s industrial future underpinning Alcoa, BP, Hamersley Iron and even the North West Shelf. EPT turned on the lights for Australia, so it’s only fair that we should shine a little light on it today. To help tell this story, I’m joined by Matthew Quomi around the warm table. Matthew’s father worked for EPT and this paternal legacy inspired Matthew, an architect and passionate historian, to research and write a book about EPT and its communities. Matthew has spent the last few years sharing warm tables across Australia piecing together the history of EPT with the pioneers of Australia’s energy legacy – migrant men now aged in their 70s and 80s. Saving lions and rewilding our world with Donalea Patman

11/13/2023
We are in what scientists call the 6th mass extinction with wildlife disappearing at a rate of 1000 times the natural extinction rate. Today’s warm table conversation is a big one. We share tears and fears with Donalea Patman who, 12 years ago, locked eyes with a lion - one of the world’s most majestic and revered creatures – and from that moment she has dedicated her career to ending the cruel and barbaric industry of canned hunting, followed by the closing of the domestic trade in ivory and rhino horn in Australia and worked on modernising the legal trade in endangered species (one of the key drivers of extinction). Season 2 of My Warm Table Podcast is amplifying people of passion and purpose. Donalea has to be one of the most passionate and purposeful people I’ve met. She sold her house and started a charity called For the Love of Wildlife (FLOW) which is dedicated to restoring the essential connection between all living things to bring our planet back to balance. She is changing the world and for her work she was the proud recipient of the Animal Action Award, International Fund for Animal Welfare ad was named in the 2017 Queen’s Birthday honours list and awarded an Order of Australia Media for her work for animal welfare. Donalea is a Freo girl at heart and after shining a spotlight on the global issue of canned hunting and predator breeding, she is now turning her vast energy and wisdom to rewilding WA. Partnering with Quenda Ecologics to build autonomous rovers that mimic what marsupials did in rural Australia before they disappered. This ambitious and unique project aims to regenerate degraded WA landscapes at scale. So grab a cup of tea and join us around the warm table. Prepare to be outraged… and educated ….and also deeply inspired by Donalea and the work she is doing for mother earth, for our future and For the Love of Wildlife. InsTRUCKta! Virtual Reality road safety lessons with Rob Sharpe

10/30/2023
The number of trucks on WA roads is set to double within the decade and triple by 2050. In fact we'd all come to a stop if it wasn’t for the work of our amazing truck drivers carting everything from milk to machinery across our vast state. So it’s really important as drivers that we know how to share our roads safely with trucks. Rob Sharpe of Transafe and InsTRUCKta! has traversed more than 1.4 million kms as a truckie and he’s had a birds eye view of more than his fair share of close calls and crazy risk taking, by cars trying to squeeze their way ahead of a truck. So it’s no wonder that he is a huge advocate for road safety. Transafe WA is a not for profit organisation and Instrucka is its big purple semi-trailer decked out with virtual reality simulations and engaging tools to teach young and old how to interact safely with trucks. Volunteering with Craig Spencer

9/5/2023
One of the greatest ways we can channel our passions for purpose is through volunteering. It’s good for civic society, it’s good for our local clubs, and research tells us that volunteering even increases our sense of wellbeing. Today I’m joined around the Warm Table by Craig Spencer – who has volunteered most of his adult life and knows better than most the importance of giving things a go and getting involved. As Head of Community Engagement at Bankwest some years ago, he was among those who spearheaded the movement in corporate volunteering and today he manages more than 900 volunteers through his role as Volunteer Manager for St John Ambulance in the Wheatbelt. He’s also a Board member of Volunteering WA and Chair of the State Government’s Volunteer Reference Group…. And he’s a volunteer firefighter in his community – which makes him passionate about ensuring each of us has a fire plan for our homes and family and he’ll give us some tips on just how we can do that. Females Over 45 Fitness with Kelli Reilly

6/26/2023
Kelli Reilly has poured all her passion and purpose into creating Females Over 45 Fitness which aims to make women over 45 stronger and fitter into their older years. Kelli is proof that even in our 50s we can go back to study, launch a successful business and follow our dreams. I’m delighted to welcome Kelli around the warm table to learn more about her life as a country girl and farmer, and to share with you what happens at the FOFF gym – what exactly is this fabulous fitness formula that Kelli has created especially for mature women? Females Over 45 Fitness is the inaugural sponsor of My Warm Table Podcast, partnering with us in Season 2. Warmest thanks to Kelli for supporting My Warm Table.
