S2 E6_Inboekselings | SA's Forgotten Slave History in The North West Province

2/27/2026
Hello Fellow Travellers and welcome to all my new travelling friends (a.k.a listeners)! In this season finale, I discuss the forgotten slave past in the North West province. Then, I read excerpts from Bothlale Tema's book, "Land of My Ancestors", which delves deeper into the history of slavery in the interior and northern parts of South Africa. I also go on to discuss a book inspired travel destination that I would like to add to my bucket list. I know! This is a heavy topic to end with, but it feels right to end the season here. Yet, stay tuned because I plan to return with a new season later this year (2026). Until then, enjoy! ________________________ Are you planning to travel through Europe soon? S3 E5_BoKaap | Cape Town | Western Cape

10/23/2025
Hello fellow travellers, in this episode I discuss and appreciate the positive living legacies of slavery in the Cape. One of those heritages include BoKaap, which is a slave descendent islamic community situated above Cape Town's city centre. I offer travel advice on some of the places you can visit and cultural activities you can participate in, that include the BoKaap museum and Tweede Nuwe Jaar carnival. Bokaap is a community that, although, is impacted by the dominant narratives of black vs white, African spirituality vs christianity which have come to define South Africa, it is not defined by them. Therefore, it is an example of how diverse South African society, cultural heritage and religion is. It is not propaganda but a true, lived South African reality. Enjoy! ________________________ Are you planning to travel through Europe soon? S3 E4_BONUS | Iziko Slave Lodge_Test Recording

4/4/2025
Hello Fellow Travellers! This is for the listeners who are interested in origin stories. When I was still toying with the idea of starting a podcast, I decided to first do some test recordings before committing to producing one. This post is one of the first recordings I created. The first, ever, tested topic was actually the Lydenburg Heads. However, I struggled to produce a complete pseudo-episode on that topic. So, this is officially the first; complete with an intro, body and conclusion. It’s amateurish and raw. As you will hear, at the time of recording it, I hadn’t yet figured out the complete title of the podcast. I also used my cellphone mic to record it. Despite all of that, I believe this recording is where the essence of the podcast was established, and where the skeleton of the final Iziko Slave Lodge episode was conceived. Tell me, can you hear any progress between this original test recording and latest podcast episodes? Disclaimer: Slavery in South Africa did not strictly in occur in the Cape. As the voortrekkers trekked into the interior of the country, they continued the practice of slavery. Between 1834 and the 1850s, they kidnapped African children to perform “cheap, captive labour” (Reader’s Digest, 1992:146) for them. Those enslaved children were referred to as “Inboekselings” (“captured African juveniles”). However, they didn’t consider it as slavery because “to them, a slave was someone who was sold into permanent bondage at a public auction for cash”. “Inboekselings were welcomed additions to the Boer household, performing a variety of activities. Some were used as herdsmen … and the builders of Boer houses” Enjoy!

S3 E4_Iziko Slave Lodge: SA’s Forgotten Past | Western Cape

3/22/2025
Hello Fellow Travellers! I will return next week with a more elaborate and detailed episode description. So, if you decide to listen now, please do come back next week to read the updated description. I still have more to add to what I’ve said in this episode. I appreciate you ALL for giving my work your time and attention. I do not take it for granted. I must warn you, this a long listen- almost two hours long. Here’s my tip for listening to long podcasts: listen to them whilst you’re cleaning or cooking. That’s what I often do. It helps to make those tasks less boring.

S3 E3_Cape Agulhas

2/6/2025
Hello fellow travellers! I once read information which falsely claimed that the Atlantic and Indian oceans meet at Cape Point. They actually meet at Cape Agulhas. In this episode, I give an honest review of my experience of visiting the attraction. So that, unlike me, you do not travel to the destination with unrealistic expectations of what the meeting of the two oceans look like. Enjoy!

S3 E2_Cape Point

2/1/2025
Hello fellow travellers! A promise has finally been fulfilled with the publishing of this episode. At the end of the first season I had made a promise that when I return with a new season, one of the first destinations I discuss would include Cape Point. In this episode I discuss the historical significance of Cape Point. I also discuss the two visits I had made to the national park to help give an idea of what to expect if you decide to visit the destination. I believe this episode is unlike any I’ve ever published before, because I share some personal stories. I hope these stories put a smile on your face like they’ve done for me as I was listening back to my final edit of this episode. Enjoy!

S1 E11_The Woman King

11/19/2022
Hello fellow travellers! In this episode, I discuss "The Woman King". A movie about the Agojie warrior women of the kingdom of Dahomey that used to exist in the region of modern day Benin, a country in west Africa. I discuss what you can expect from the movie and some of the elements of its production that personally stood out for me. In addition to the movie, I also discuss "Warrior Women with Lupita Nyong'o" which is a documentary about the Agojie warriors. I suggest that you watch it in addition to watching the movie, to help balance what is fictional about these women with what is factual. So that you may have a well rounded idea of who these women were. The documentary is available on Youtube. Enjoy! Disclaimer: I've rescheduled the podcast publishing day. New episodes will now be published on Saturdays for the remainder of season 1. Another disclaimer is that I make the mistake of calling the king of Dahomey Gohez. His correct name is Ghezo.

So that you may also go grab yourselves copies of his book. I bought mine from Exclusive Books at Menlyn Mall, in Pretoria. We might not be focusing on a physical destination but we are still definitely learning something new about South African cultural heritage. Enjoy!

S1 E9_Anarchy: Power Failures and Murder Rocks SA Tourism

10/7/2022
Hello fellow travellers! It's been a minute and in this episode I discuss why I was absent last week. I also discuss changes in my personal life that might affect the weekly schedule of the podcast. Then, in the wake of the news concerning a German tourist who was shot and killed during a failed hi-jacking in Mpumalanga earlier this week, I discuss practical safety tips that tourists could use through traveling South Africa. It's been a trying time. Yet, I'm not discouraged by it and I hope my optimism in this episode encourages you too. Enjoy!

S1 E8_The Other Reality of Traveling Mpumalanga

9/23/2022
Hello fellow travellers! In this episode, I discuss some of the safety precautions that one should consider when traveling to Mpumalanga (and possibly South Africa in general). Though South Africa is a destination I am proud of and which I encourage everyone to travel, I do not want to present information that is ignorant of the issues that plague the country. I also do not want to present my own travel experiences as glamorous and without faults. Traveling the country, and the world in general, does not eliminate the issues that exist and make you invisible to them. Rather, travel makes the issues hyper-visible and challenges you to confront them. My hope for the travel information I provide is to conscientise listeners about the places and societies I visit, instead of promote fantastical and ignorant ideas about a destination. Enjoy!

S1 E7_Long Tom Pass

9/16/2022
Hello fellow travellers! In this episode, I discuss the Long Tom Pass which is a section of the Panorama Route, in Mpumalanga, that runs between Lydenburg and Sabie. It is very majestic and has a lot to offer in terms of heritage and activities, which I also discuss in this episode. Enjoy! Disclaimers are becoming a thing in my descriptions (LOL!): The correct length of the barrel of a Long Tom Cannon is 155 mm, not 155 m.

S1 E6_Lydenburg Heads

9/9/2022
Hello fellow travellers! In this episode I discuss the Lydenburg Heads, which are a collection of sculptures made out of pottery that date back to the Early Iron Age, approximately 490/500 AD (5th century). These heads are significant because they are the oldest known sculpture artworks found in the southern region of Africa. Enjoy! Another disclaimer: The correct location that the Iziko South African Museum is located in is the Cape Town Company Gardens.

S1 E5_SA Tourism Month and Travel Deals

9/2/2022
Hello fellow travellers! In this episode I discuss the South African travel deals that are annually made available to local citizens during September. These include the SA Travel Week and the SANParks week. Do make sure to not miss out on these deals. Enjoy! Disclaimer: Limpopo is a Province. In this episode, I make the mistake of saying it is a country. My mouth sometimes tends to betray me and it seems to do so, more especially, throughout this episode.

8/12/2022
Hello fellow travellers! In this second episode, I discuss the Mapungubwe cultural site which shows evidence of an ancient African Kingdom that existed during the Iron Age at approximately 1200 AD (12th Century), but has since unfortunately disappeared. I had so much to say about Mapungubwe and its personal significance to me as a Black African and Pedi woman that I had to break the episode into two parts. This is the first part. Enjoy!
