Bonus | “It’s about the years and years and years of being stood on and stamped on” - Black Lives Matter Protest in Cardiff

Today we hear from the voices from the crowd at the Black Lives Matter protest that took place in Cardiff's Bute Park on Saturday, June 6th 2020. Black Lives Matter is an international human rights movement which began in 2013 with the #BlackLivesMatter in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer and has been active ever since. The killing of George Floyd on May 25th sparked international protests, such as the one held in Cardiff. In this episode, Laurence took a microphone, on a makeshift boom pole (to enable social distancing) and listened to what people in the crowd had to say. Thanks to all those who contributed to the episode, we are very grateful for you sharing your words with us. This special episode replaces our regular episode that would have been published today. She's currently working for Edinburgh's Food For Good Coalition, who've - to date - cooked around 30,000 meals for the people of Edinburgh (the "second cash richest city in the UK", at £16.9bn in 2017 figures). They also talk about the need for a better work-life balance, zero-hours contracts, changes to the food system and a positive side effect of the lockdown; that men are talking more about their feelings and mental health. Links for this Episode Penny is Director of Engagement at Lyfta Co-founder of BAMEEd Network She mentions Runnymede's Our Migration Story The UN's Sustainable Development Goals (aka SDGs or 'Global Goals') are 17 goals that came out of a worldwide consultation (including input from the global public) and that followed on from the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The latter focused more on the so-called 'developing' world but, as Penny mentions, the SDGs are aimed at every country and acknowledge that more must be done to reduce inequalities, poverty etc. in all countries. They are also used by many educators and offer a useful, accessible framework for engaging educators and pupils alike with global social, political and environmental issues. She explains the impact that the pandemic has had on their work in both the UK and Indonesia - including how their forest patrols (which help to protect Orangutans from illegal activities) have been put on hold, due to social distancing related measures for staff in Indonesia.
