On their final night in Hill House, Olivia, trapped in delusion, hosts a tea party in the Red Room for Nell, Luke, and their friend Abigail. Unbeknownst to them, the tea is laced with poison—Olivia’s desperate attempt to "protect" them from the horrors of the real world. Hugh intervenes just in time to save Nell and Luke, but Abigail is lost. In the aftermath, he flees with the surviving children as Olivia, desperate to escape her nightmare, plunges from the spiral staircase. Hugh later discovers William Hill’s bricked-up corpse in the walls and finds the Red Room unlocked during the final haunting. After the funeral, Olivia’s ghost attacks Luke, Hugh, and Theo. Luke vanishes, taking Shirley’s wallet and Theo’s car, deepening the family’s turmoil. Ty West hit it out of the park with X, and surprised us all with the near-immediate release of it’s prequel Pearl. Set in 1918, Pearl follows the younger self of our former protagonist as she lives on a farm and dreams of a life bigger than what she has. However, nothing wants to go the way she wants it to. Her husband immediately left her to go fight in the war, her mother hates everything she does, and her father (and only friend) is in no condition to comfort her. But, everything changes when her sister-in-law visits with the news of a huge opportunity at stardom. Now, Pearl will stop at nothing to get what she wants. The movie brings back Mia Goth in the title role and features a brand new cast of characters to get axed off one by one. Well, it looks like we have officially reached the end of our time with John Kramer and Co. (for now). There’s been some highs and a lot of very low lows, but we made it through. That’s right, this week we’re wrapping up our Saw retrospective with Saw X, the latest installment in the franchise. Released in October 2023, this movie picks up shortly after the events of the original Saw (2004) and follows John Kramer as he makes one final attempt to cure his cancer. This attempt leads him to Mexico for an experimental treatment that’s guaranteed to cure even the most advanced forms of cancer. However, John soon finds out this was a scam used to prey upon society’s most desperate people and decides to punish the scammers in a way only Jigsaw can.
