BA – Breathing Apparatus. A key piece of firefighting kit, comprising of an oxygen mask and oxygen cylinders.
On-call and Retained Firefighters – Firefighters who do not have regimented shifts and may have another job or other responsibilities.
Wholetime Firefighters – Firefighters who have a who work full-time with a set shift pattern.
Pager - device that each firefighter carries. It alerts them to an incident when they are away from the station.
Mod A - the first phase of training for on-call firefighters including fire safety, ladders, fire engines, working safely at height and more.
Mod D - this training focusses on responding to road traffic collisions.

Definitions:
Occupational Health – Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service support service that provide a majority of their mental and physical advice, first aid, workshops, training and trauma management.
Marine Court – One of The Firefighter’s Charity residential centre in West Sussex.
Harcombe House – Another of The Firefighter’s Charity’s residential centre in Devon.
Watch Manager – A firefighter ranking. In charge of the watch at fire stations, whilst also carrying out firefighting duties.
Watch – a group of firefighters from a station, working on a certain shift pattern. Crews have a total of 4 watches to cover 24 hours a day.

#2 Firefighters in ICU (Intensive Care Unit)

Earlier this year, Hampshire and Isle of Wight firefighters volunteered to help the NHS by working in intensive care units, assisting staff with daily tasks to keep our hospitals running during the rise in Covid-19 cases. Sophie and Daryll explore their emotional experiences, the respect they have for our NHS teams, the friendships they developed with staff and patients they met along the way.

Definitions:
ICU – Intensive Care Unit. The hospital department that cares for patients who are acutely unwell and require critical medical care.
Proning – Turning patients on to their side to aid with lung function and air flow, in this case for Covid-19 patients.
Urban Search and Rescue –The Fire Service department that support search and rescue operations during natural disasters, large-scale building collapses and terror-related attacks, nationally and internationally.
Cosham - refers to Cosham fire station.
QA – refers to Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth

On the run – A term for a firefighter working on shift or attending an incident.
Blue Peaks – A blue segment on a firefighter’s helmet, indicating their trainee status.
BA – Breathing Apparatus. A key piece of firefighting kit, comprising of an oxygen mask and oxygen cylinders.
On-call and Retained Firefighters – Firefighters who do not have regimented shifts and may have another job or other responsibilities.
Wholetime Firefighters – Firefighters who work full-time with a set shift pattern.
Bells – The siren that sounds when firefighters are being called to an incident.
Academy – The department that trains our new entrants as firefighters and continues to train them throughout their careers.
RTC – Road Traffic Collision. This refers to incidents involving vehicles on the roads.
Safe and Well Visits – Home visits for our older or more vulnerable community members to perform safety checks. The service is free, and you can self-refer via the link above.
