Amazing Spider-Man Vol 2 #36 (The 9/11 Issue)

10/12/2023
This week we got together to talk about a brief, single-issue of comics that was important for the time even if it slightly misses the mark. In November 2001, Marvel released an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man commemorating and memorializing the events of September 11, 2001. Join us as we chat about the comic itself and the broader issue it tackled. For the next few episodes, we will be reading comics somewhat at random. We will go back to themed readings for Season 13 in February 2024, but for now we're just going to read whatever we want. Next week, we'll be revisiting a comic series we started literally years ago in Season 2 and reading Locke & Key Vol 2: Head Games. Check out the inaugural crossover of the Hall of Pods, our podcast network! We discuss Doctor Strange In the Multiverse of Madness with The Fandom Optimists, Cape Corner, and True Believers: a Comics PoDCast! Find all of our links here. S12E10 - X-Men (1991) #1-3 "Rubicon"

9/1/2023
The time has finally come to read the best-selling comic book of all time! This week, we read and discussed X-Men (1991) #1-3 "Rubicon", a story about a lot of things and also nothing. This story concludes Chris Claremont's iconic run of X-Men, and contains great character exploration of Magneto as well as an introduction to the structure of the X-Men for most of the 90s, where artists and writers like Jim Lee and Scott Lobdell would take the reins. While a bit frenetic and confused, it is a fun read that is well worth the time. And apparently millions of fans thought so too with over 4 million copies of the #1 issue sold, making it far and away the best-selling comic book issue of all time. Veronica's theme for this season is stories from the DC Graphic Novels for Young Adults imprint. Monte's theme is the five top-selling superhero comic books of all time. The comic lineup for Season 12 was: Superman Smashes the Klan Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1-6 You Brought Me the Ocean Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) #1-7 Shadow of the Batgirl Batman: The 10-Cent Adventure Nubia: Real One Fantastic Four (2002) #60 Galaxy: The Prettiest Star X-Men (1991) #1-3 Check out the inaugural crossover of the Hall of Pods, our podcast network! This issue (a prelude/teaser for an upcoming Batman event) was sold for the discounted price of 10 cents, resulting in it becoming the 3rd best-selling superhero comic book of all time. MS14 - Star Trek, Terrorism, and Me

5/16/2023
This episode we will solve the age-old debate of terrorism. You're welcome. Ok not really. We will be discussing how Star Trek actually solved the age-old debate of terrorism. Ok not really. Maybe they just kinda skirted the issue and glossed over some important context and details. Idk, it's art, ok? Not everything has to have a solution. Sometimes you just make a story and use a complex political issue as a backdrop and that's just ok. We watched two episodes of Star Trek for this episode, one from The Next Generation and one from Deep Space Nine. While they didn't really solve the question of whether terrorism is acceptable, they were fun. I guess you can't have it all. Next episode we will be discussing You Brought Me the Ocean, a YA re-imagining of the origin story of Jackson Hyde AKA Aqualad. Monte's theme this season is best-selling superhero comics of all time. Veronica's theme is stories from the DC Graphic Novels for Young Adults imprint. *** Check out the inaugural crossover of the Hall of Pods, our new podcast network! S12E2 - Amazing Spider-Man: The Parker Luck w/ Not a Hoax! Not a Dream!

5/4/2023
How do you rebuild from your worst enemy taking over your body and living your superhero life with all your superhero friends, forming new relationships and burning old bridges and leaving the existential question of "if I'm not in control of my body am I responsible for the things that happen"? This week we read a story that doesn't answer those questions, but it is very fun. We read Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1-6 "Parker Luck" by Dan Slott. Joining us is Ben from the Not a Hoax! Not a Dream! podcast. (Check out Melissa and Monte's guest appearance here!) Next week will be a minisode, and then we will be reading You Brought Me the Ocean, an alternate origin story for the gayest Aqualad, Jackson Hyde. Monte's theme for this season is the five top-selling superhero comic books of all time. Veronica's theme is stories from the DC Graphic Novels for Young Adults imprint. The comic lineup for Season 12 will be: Superman Smashes the Klan Amazing Spider-Man (2014) #1-6 You Brought Me the Ocean Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) #1-7 Shadow of the Batgirl Batman: The 10-Cent Adventure Nubia: Real One Fantastic Four (2002) #60 Galaxy: The Prettiest Star X-Men (1991) #1-3 We invite you to read along with us. ***** Check out the inaugural crossover of the Hall of Pods, our podcast network!
